Maulana Bhasani's 45th death anniversary Wednesday
The 45th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani will be observed on Wednesday with due respect.
Bhasani, popularly known as 'Majlum Jananeta' (the leader of the downtrodden), passed away on November 17, 1976.
Different social organisations and political parties have chalked out programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.
Besides, the death anniversary of the great leader will be observed in Santosh of Tangail district where he was laid to rest.

Different political parties and organisations, including BNP, Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP Bhasani), Gonosanghati Andolon Moulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology, Bhasani Foundation and Bhashani Anusari Parishad, will mark the pay homage to the grave of the great leader and hold discussions on the occasion.
A BNP delegation, led by its standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, will place wreaths at the grave of Bhasani in Tangail and offer fateha there at 10am on Wednesday.
The party will also arrange a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Thursday to mark the day.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a message on the occasion recalling the role of Moulana Bhasani in establishing people’s rights and building progressive, democratic and non-communal Bangladesh free from exploitation and deprivation.
Meanwhile, BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also issued separate messages paying tribute to the memory of Bhasani.

Bhasani was a popular leader in his fight against imperialism and oppression of Pakistani rulers. He led the historic Farakka March in 1976 to ensure Bangladesh's just rights to the share of the Ganges River water.
Born in 1880 in Dhangara, Sirajganj, Bhasani gained immense popularity among peasants. He is regarded as the proponent of secular and left-leaning politics in present-day Bangladesh.
He was the founder and president of the Pakistan Awami Muslim League which later became Awami League (AL). He also formed a progressive political organisation, National Awami Party (NAP).

67th death anniversary of Poet Jibanananda Das observed in Barishal
The 67th death anniversary of Poet Jibanananda Das was observed at Barisal, his ancestral city, with day-long program on Friday.
The event was organized by the poet Jibanananda lovers on the open stage of the city's Shilpakala Academy at 5.30 pm on Friday.
The poets demanded to preserve the house and property of Jibanananda Das in order to preserve his memory through discussing the poet's life and works and poetry recitation.
Besides, they demanded to name the open stage of Barisal Shilpa Kala Academy as Kabi Jibanananda Das Mancha.

The discussion session was attended by Chief Executive Officer of Barisal District Council Md Ahsan Habib, Director of Barisal University Jibanananda Research Center Professor Md Muhsin Uddin, Associate Professor Debashish Haldar of Bangla Department of Government Brajmohan College and Poet Henry Swapan.
Earlier, Barisal Brajmohan College administration and various cultural organizations put floral tribute on the altar of the portrait of the poet at the Poet Jibanananda Memorial Hall. Meanwhile, another discussion session was held at the Poet Jibanananda Das Auditorium and Library in the morning the National Poetry Council.
Poet, novelist and essayist Jibanananda, best known as the poet of ‘Ruposhi Bangla’, was born on February 17 in 1899. Jibanananda Das got hit by a tram while crossing a road near Kolkata’s Deshpriya Park on 14 October 1954. He succumbed to his injuries on October 22, 1954.
His volumes of poems include Jhhora Palak, Dhusar Pandulipi, Banalata Sen, Mahaprithibi, Satti Tarar Timir, Rupasi Bangla, Bela Abela Kalbela.
Legendary rock star Ayub Bachchu’s 3rd death anniversary today
Monday marks the third death anniversary of eminent singer, guitarist, composer and music director Ayub Bachchu who died of cardiac arrest at his Moghbazar residence on this day at the age of 56.
The beloved front man of one of the most famous Bangladeshi rock bands Love Runs Blind, popularly known as LRB - Bachchu is considered as one of the most respected Bangladeshi music artiste.
Fans, friends and admirers of the celebrated rock star alongside his family and different organizations and media outlets are commemorating this day paying their tributes to the rock icon.

Ahnaf Tazwar Ayub, son of the rockstar posted a guitar cover of Bachchu's one of the most popular songs "Ghumonto Shohore" (In the Sleeping City) on LRB's official Facebook page on Monday, quoting: "I really felt like you were right there beside me when I played this, Sollo. We all miss and love you very much."
Bachchu's wife, Ferdous Chandana Ayub said that an initiative has been taken to create a museum of Ayub Bachchu where 40 of his used guitars will be put on display. The iconic guitarist was known for his amazing collection of guitars, which he collected from all over the world.
Many fans and music stars have been paying their special tributes to the rock legend on the social media marking his death anniversary.
Students of Yamaha Music School has made a piano cover of Bachchu's iconic song "Shei Tumi" on Sunday, shared by Yamaha Music Bangladesh's official Facebook page.
Among other events, Chittagong Musician Club is scheduled to organize a discussion event on the life and works of Ayub Bachchu at the Celebration Community Point in Moghbazar at 6:30 pm on Monday.
Last year on this day, Bangladesh Copyright Office unveiled the digital archiving of rock legend Ayub Bachchu’s all the melodious creations that he worked on for his entire life.
Born in Patiya at Khorna union in Chittagong on August 16, 1962 to Mohammad Ishaque Chowdhury and Nurjahan Begum, Bachchu founded his band LRB in 1991 in Chittagong.

Prior to that, Bachchu started his journey as a band musician with his band ‘Golden Boys’ (later changed to ’Ugly Boys’) that he formed with his childhood friend and legendary Bangladeshi singer Kumar Bishwajit, and also served as a prominent member in renowned Bangladeshi bands such as Feelings with another contemporary rock icon of Bangladesh, James - and Souls, where he played for 10 years before founding LRB.
One of the most popular Bangladeshi bands of all time, LRB has performed more than thousands of gigs in the home (500+ open-air & 2000+ indoor) and abroad. They went for their first international tour in the USA and they played at 7 states, and till date, it is the only Bangla Rock Band which played their music in the famous Medicine Square Garden (New York).

Mukundalal Sarker's 42th death anniversary tomorrow
The 42th anniversary of death of Mukundalal Sarker, a prominent leader of anti-British Movement and a war veteran of 1971, will be observed tomorrow (Wednesday).
Sree Sarker was born in 1909 at Dharmaryer Bari Village under Muksedpur Upazila of Gopalgonj district. During his long political career, he played an important role in building a strong resistance against the imperialist forces and actively participated in the movement against Zamindary system. He was detained for several times for his role against British rule.
Sree Sarker was imprisoned under defense of Pakistan rule in 1965. He was very close to Hussain Shaheed Suhurawardy, Sher-e- Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
As part of social welfare activities, Sree Sarker established several colleges, high schools and primary schools in different areas of Gopalgonj and Khulna.
To observe the day, special prayers and discussion on the book titled: ‘Gopalgonjer Mukundalal: Janapader Janoneta’ written by Bangla Academy Director Dr Tapan Bagchi will be held at 4pm tomorrow (Wednesday) at Sree Sarker’s Dharmarayer Bari residence.
Highsur Bridhaashram at Kasiani upazila of Gopalgonj district will organize a function to feed special diet to the hapless older man and women of the Bridhyaashram on the day and offer prayer to pay tribute to Mukundalal Sarker.

Salam Talukder's 22nd death anniv Friday
The 22nd death anniversary of former BNP secretary general Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder will be observed on Friday.
Local BNP and Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Smrity Sangsad have chalked out various programmes, including virtual discussion and milad mahfil, to observe the day with due respect.

He said Salam Talukder had played a significant role in the anti-Ershad movement in the 80s and in establishing democracy and people’s rights in Bangladesh.

Remembering Tareque Masud, Mishuk Munier on 10th death anniversary
The 10th death anniversary of late filmmaker Tareque Masud, a storyteller who is recognized for his creative brilliance and critical acclaim from home and abroad throughout his lifetime, is being observed in the country.
Tareque and Mishuk Munier along with three others were killed in a fatal road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Ghior Upazila of Manikganj on August 13 in 2011. The accident happened when a microbus carrying the two short-lived celebrities crashed into a bus on the highway while they were returning to Dhaka from Manikganj after visiting a shooting location.

Indian film scholar Sanjay Mukhopadhyay will deliver the Tareque Masud Memorial Lecture on Friday at 8.30 pm, which will be streamed live on Moviyana Film Society’s Facebook page. The event, being organized by Tareque Masud Memorial Trust and Moviyana Film Society, will be joined by Catherine Masud and Moviyana Film Society president Belayet Hossain Mamun.
Born on December 6, 1956, in Faridpur, Tareque was involved with the film society movement in the late 70s. His maiden film is ‘Adam Surat’, a documentary on the legendary artist SM Sultan which was released in 1989.
'Matir Moyna', the most acclaimed film made by Tareque Masud, earned the FIPRESCI Prize in the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and became Bangladesh's first film to compete for the Academy Award for the best foreign-language film in the same year. His other major films are ‘Runway’, ‘Ontorjatra’ ‘Muktir Gaan’ and the unfinished 'Kagojer Phul'.
In addition to filmmaking, Tareque was also a pioneer of the independent film movement in Bangladesh. He was a founding member of the Short Film Forum, the leading platform for independent filmmakers. He organised the country’s first International Short and Documentary Film Festival in 1988.

For his majestic and influential role in modern Bangladeshi filmmaking, Tareque Masud was posthumously awarded Ekushey Padak in 2012.
Mishuk Munier was a former faculty member of the Department of Journalism at Dhaka University and a well-revered cinematographer. He was the son of cultural activist Lily Chowdhury and Bangla Academy Award-winning educationist, playwright, literary critic and political activist Munier Chowdhury, an intellectual martyr who was assassinated by Pakistan Army and its local collaborators on December 14, 1971.
Alif Alauddin releases tribute song commemorating father Alauddin Ali on first death anniversary
Monday marks the first death anniversary of legendary music director Alauddin Ali, and commemorating the day, his daughter Alif Alauddin, also a popular singer, anchor and songwriter, has released a remastered version of a song on Monday which her father made years ago.The song, titled "Tumi Chole Gecho", was written and composed by Alauddin Ali and originally sung by his wife and Alif’s mother Salma Sultana on BTV in 1983. However, it had never been recorded or released on any album.Alif Alauddin posted the remastered tribute edition from her Facebook page and profile on Monday. The tribute version of the song is remastered by Alif Alauddin’s husband and renowned guitarist Kazi Faisal Ahmed.

Remembering Tagore, the polymath!
The 80th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European and Bengali poet to win the Nobel Prize in literature, is being observed on Friday.
According to the Gregorian calendar, Tagore died at the age of 80 on August 7 in 1941, but his death anniversary is traditionally observed on 22nd Srabon according to the Bengali calendar.
Since his death, the day has always been observed with extensive programmes in a befitting manner as a tradition in both Bangladesh and India. However, because of the ongoing pandemic and the consequent shutdown, the day is being commemorated with online events this year.
Several cultural organisations and government-non government institutions are paying their respective tributes with virtual events, featuring several noted artists, Tagore enthusiasts and scholars.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) began the day by streaming live on its Facebook page a virtual programme at 10 am. The event, titled 'Apon Majhe Shokti Dhoro, Nijeke Koro Joy', features discussions and cultural performances. Several cultural personalities, including Syed Hasan Imam and Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, have been roped in by BSA.
Bangla Academy will also pay its tribute with an online programme, to be streamed live on its Facebook page at 4 pm. KM Khalid, State Minister for Cultural Affairs, will join the event as the chief guest while eminent novelist Selina Hossain will present the keynote speech.
Newly elected Director General of Bangla Academy, Mohammad Nurul Huda will deliver the welcome speech and the event will be presided over by National Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam.
Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi will stream a Facebook live programme at 7.30 pm. The online event will feature songs, dance, recitation, and discussions, and it will be joined by Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, Azizul Huq, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi General Secretary Jamshed Anwar Tapan, and Assistant General Secretary Iqbalul Haque Khan, besides others.

The country's leading cultural institution, Chhayanaut will broadcast an online programme, titled 'Shraboner Amontrone' on its Facebook page and YouTube channel at 9 pm. The event will feature recorded videos of Tagore songs, rendered by prominent Rabindra Sangeet exponents.
Besides, different TV channels, radio stations, and other online platforms will telecast special programmes marking the death anniversary of Tagore.
The youngest of the 13 surviving children of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore was born on 25th Baishakh, 1268, in Bengali calendar (May 7, 1861, according to the Gregorian calendar) in Jorasanko mansion of Calcutta, then in British India.
Also referred to as the "Bard of Bengal", Tagore composed over 2,000 songs which created a separate genre known as ‘Tagore songs’ in both the Bengals. Besides, he penned a total of eight novels, 84 short stories, and an uncountable number of poems in his prolific literary career spanning almost seven decades.
He envisioned and founded the Visva Bharati University at Santiniketan in 1921 in order to spread the practice of culture and literature in the broader sphere and create future artists and literateurs for ages.
For his anthology of lyrical ballads ‘Gitanjali’ (Song Offerings), Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 as the first Bengali and Non-European poet.

Mahbub Ali Khan’s 37th death anniversary Friday
The 37th death anniversary of Rear Admiral (retd) Mahbub Ali Khan, also a former minister for communications and agriculture, will be observed on Friday.
Elaborate programmes have been chalked out to observe the day, both at home and abroad, with due respect.
Special prayers will be offered and Quran khwani will be held at different mosques in Dhaka, Sylhet, Bogura, Jamalpur, and Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the USA and the UK to mark the day, said a press release on Thursday.

Besides, wreaths will be placed at his Banani grave in Dhaka on Friday morning on the occasion.
Surovi, a voluntary organisation founded by MA Khan’s wife, will arrange special prayers for the salvation of the departed soul.

Humayun Ahmed’s 9th death anniversary today
Monday marks the 9th death anniversary of eminent writer, playwright, lyricist, and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed.
Considered as one of the cornerstones in modern Bengali literature, Humayun Ahmed died of colorectal cancer at the age of 63 at Bellevue Hospital, New York on July 19, 2012.

Like the previous year, Ahmed's death anniversary is being observed by various organizations through a limited arrangement, due to the ongoing disastrous situation of Covid-19.
Several organizations are scheduled to honour the eminent writer through different virtual programmes, on various media platforms.

Himu Paribahan, a noted fanbase group of eminent writers, has been observing this special day since 2013 - however, due to the catastrophic situation of Covid-19 this year, the group has scaled down its activities while the Gazipur branch of the group placed floral wreaths on the litterateur's graveyard at his beloved Nuhash Palli.

Humayun Ahmed was born in Kutubpur village at Mohanganj, Netrakona to Foyzur Rahman Ahmed and Ayesha Foyez on November 13, 1948.
In his academic life, he passed the School Certificate (1965) from Bogra Zilla School, Intermediate from Dhaka College and earned his BSc and MSc in Chemistry from Dhaka University with First Class. He joined Dhaka University as a lecturer of Chemistry and later went to North Dakota State University in the United States to pursue his PhD in Polymer Chemistry.
'Nondito Noroke' (1972) was Humayun Ahmed's debut novel, which gave Humayun the breakthrough and propelled his career as a writer. The Ekushey Padak winner writer wrote over 200 fiction and non-fiction books, all of which were bestsellers in Bangladesh to date.
Humayun Ahmed won Bangla Academy Award, Lekhak Shibir Award, Shishu Academy Award, Michael Madhusudan Padak, Bachsas Award, and more for his outstanding contributions in his illustrious career to the Bengali culture and entertainment sphere.
As a content maker in television, Ahmed debuted with his drama 'Prothom Prohor' (1983) for Bangladesh Television (BTV). His successful journey in television continued with popular drama serials 'Ei Shob Din Ratri', 'Bohubrihi', 'Ayomoy', 'Nokkhotrer Raat', 'Aaj Robibar' and most notably, 'Kothao Keu Nei' which created a historic hype in the nation - surrounding the lead character 'Baker Bhai', portrayed by veteran actor Asaduzzaman Noor.
Humayun Ahmed also explored success as a filmmaker in the early 1990s and went on to make a total of eight films in his filmmaking career, each based on his own novels. Two of his films, 'Syamol Chhaya' (2004) and 'Ghetuputra Komola' (2012) were the official Bangladeshi submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in their respective years.

He received seven Bangladesh National Film Awards in different categories for the films 'Shonkhonil Karagar' (as screenwriter), 'Aguner Poroshmoni', 'Daruchini Dwip' and 'Ghetuputra Komola'.
The literature is survived by two sons Ninit and Nishad with his second wife Meher Afroze Shaon; and only son Nuhash Humayun, who is currently working in the media industry as a content creator and director, and three daughters Nova, Shila, Bipasha with his first wife Gultekin Ahmed.
