T20 World Cup: Rossouw’s ton set a tough challenge for Bangladesh
Riding on an imperious batting display by Rilee Rossouw, South Africa posted a massive total of 205 against Bangladesh in their second match of the T20 World Cup in Sydney on Thursday.
Rossouw was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan, but only in the 19th over when he had already done enough damage to Bangladesh. The left-handed batter ended up with 109 off just 56 deliveries, seven fours and eight sixes.

It was the second consecutive ton by Rossouw in T20Is—only the second instance of such a fate. In the first 15 overs, South Africa posted 176 for only two wickets.
But in the last five overs, Bangladesh made a good comeback, conceding only 29 runs and taking three more wickets. While Rossouw was the best scorer for South Africa, Quinton de Kock was the second-best batter for them, scoring 63 off just 38 balls.
Earlier, Taskin Ahmed removed South African captain Temba Bavuma for two in the first over. But the Tigers failed to continue on a good start. For Bangladesh, Shakib bagged two wickets, conceding 33 runs in three overs, while Taskin, Hasan Mahmud, and Afif Hossain scalped one wicket each.

T20 World Cup 2022: Shakib puts his faith in pace against South Africa
After Taskin Ahmed registered his career-best figures in T20Is to make the difference in Bangladesh’s first match of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The less experienced Hasan Mahmud also did well in the same match. Now, ahead of the second match of the event against South Africa, Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan said he is hoping the pacers will keep shining in the World Cup.
Bangladesh will take on South Africa on Thursday at 9 am (Bangladesh time). The Tigers will be hoping to make it two wins out of two at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, against opponents who they beat earlier this year in their own backyard in an ODI series for the very first time.
“Taskin became a leader of our team,” Shakib said in the pre-match press conference. “After Mashrafe left the national team, Taskin has improved a lot in the last couple of years. We have a great pace-bowling attack in all three formats of the game. I hope they will continue to deliver the same in the World Cup.”
In the last match in Hobart, Bangladesh had to play under cold conditions, but in Sydney, they are going to get better weather. That might help the Tigers to perform in a better way as well.
In the last match in the same venue, New Zealand beat Australia after scoring a massive total of 200 runs. That indicated that the wicket of Sydney will be friendly for the batters, and winning the toss may play a big role. But Shakib didn't seem interested in the discussion of winning the toss or not.

“Toss is not in our hand,” Shakib replied to a question. “Since we are looking forward to winning this match, we have to play well no matter what we do first— be it bowling or batting.”
South Africa had to share points in their first match which ended with no result due to bad weather. Now, if they lose against Bangladesh, their chance to qualify for the next phase of the event will virtually be shrunk. Shakib says that this situation will inspire South Africa to play all-attack cricket.
Bangladesh captain believes the spinner will get the extra friendly environment at the surface of Sydney. It is clear from the captain's words that Bangladesh may go with an extra spinner in the next match. In that case, Yasir Ali might have to pave the way for Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Before this match, Bangladesh took on South Africa in seven T20Is and failed to win any of those matches. But this time, Bangladesh has a good chance, especially, after the win in the first match against the Netherlands, Tigers are pumped-up and confident to keep the winning-streak intact.
T20 World Cup: Bangladesh to take on South Africa Wednesday in warm-up match
The cornered Tigers are set to take on South Africa on Wednesday in their last warm-up ahead of the Super 12s of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia.
In the first warm-up match, Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat to Afghanistan. So the match against South Africa came as the last chance for Bangladesh to finalize their plan and the playing XI ahead of the main event.
Bangladesh has been going through a prolonged bad patch in T20Is for a while. They failed to do well in the Asia Cup, they also failed to do well in the last few series as well. So the team now came under immense pressure to do well.

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Minhajul Abedin, the chief selector of Bangladesh, said it’s the players who have to play well on the field.
“We have done enough experiments, now the players should play well,” Minhajul said on Tuesday while talking to the media in Brisbane. “We have a few practice sessions after the warm-up match. After that, we have to play well in the World Cup.”
The match will begin at 2 pm (Bangladesh time) on Wednesday.
South Africa out for 326, leads England by 161 in 1st Test
South Africa will take a lead of 161 runs into the second innings of the first Test against England at Lord’s.
The Proteas resumed on 289-7 and were bowled out for 326 after an hour’s play on Day 3, with Stuart Broad taking a wonder-catch before cleaning up the tail with two wickets on Friday.
Broad leaped backward and took a one-handed catch at wide mid-on to remove Kagiso Rabada for 3 off the third ball of the day, bowled by Matt Potts, then got edges into the slip cordon to account for Marco Jansen (48) and Lungi Ngidi (0).

England, which was bowled out for 165 early on the second day, has won four straight Test matches under the new leadership team of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
South Africa’s Rabada injured ahead of England series
South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will miss the two Twenty20 internationals against Ireland this week because of a left ankle injury.
Cricket South Africa on Tuesday said the Proteas’ attack leader will continue his rehabilitation in an effort to be fit for the test series against England, which starts Aug. 17 at Lord’s.

Rabada skipped the last T20 against England last Sunday but his medial ligament injury will need more treatment, CSA said, meaning he’s ruled out of the T20 games against the Irish in Bristol on Wednesday and Friday.
South Africa leads the World Test Championship standings ahead of a three-test series against a revived England, which has won its last four tests under new captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum.

They can test their weaknesses and strengths by giving chances to the players who are considered for the main event. The first match preview of the twenty20 international series is discussed in this article.

Not having Ben Stokes in the team is a major loss for the English campaign in the ENG vs SA 2022 T20I Series. The absence of Stokes in the squad has opened the door for others to showcase their abilities on the international stage and make a statement to the selectors for considering England’s World Cup squad.
Phil Salt, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, and David Willey will fight for two places in the lower middle-order, where batters are required to be more aggressive for a perfect finish. The competition will be between them to find a place in the playing XI. Two will be seen playing the first match in Bristol. If anyone fails, they can be dropped for the second contest.

England have a settled top order, including Bairstow and Livingstone, who come at no.4 and 5 respectively. Reece Topley is now an automatic choice after his recent performances in the white-ball series. Besides, Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid are regular members of England’s T20 side.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Jason Roy, Jos Buttler (captain & wicket-keeper), Dawid Malan;
Middle-Order: Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran;
Lower-Order: Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley.
South Africa
Regular captain Temba Bavuma will miss the T20I series against England due to an elbow injury. Stand-in captain David Miller is one of the most sought-after twenty20 players in the world right now. He just needs to instill confidence in the players that they are a competitive side to overcome England in their own backyard.

South Africa’s T20 side’s recent performance has been encouraging, winning six out of ten matches they have played since last year's T20 World Cup. The team has some world-class power hitters and lethal pacers who have the ability to take the game away from the opposition on their own.
Quinton de Kock, Van der Dussen, Markram, and Miller can be ruthless against the opposition. In bowling, Rabada, Ngidi, and Nortje are well-equipped pacers for the shortest format of the game. The Proteas team management may find it difficult to pick a spinner from Shamsi and Maharaj.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Quinton de Kock (wicket-keeper), Rilee Rossouw, Rassie van der Dussen;
Middle-Order: Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller (captain), Dwaine Pretorius, Tabraiz Shamsi;
Lower-Order: Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi.

Bristol’s weather forecast & toss prediction
There is no chance of rain in Bristol on Wednesday, and the weather is expected to be cloudy and cool, ideal for a T20 match. Batters can rule over bowlers on this ground. However, those who have variety in bowling can find a way to stop the batters and get success from Bristol’s wicket.
Bottom Line
Jos Buttler has failed to lead England to a series victory since taking over as the country's permanent white-ball formats captain. The Buttler-led England team has won four matches and lost five, including two series losses to the Rohid-led Indian side. He will be desperate to clinch the ENG vs SA 2022 T20I Series and find the right combination for the shorter-version of the game.
David Miller has led South Africa twice in the Twenty20 format, with one victory and one defeat. It’s an opportunity for Miller to showcase his leadership ability against quality opposition. If he succeeds, the South African cricket board may consider him to do the role on a permanent basis in the future.

South Africa pulls out of scheduled ODI series in Australia
Australia is likely to get the competition points from a cancelled three-game limited-overs international series after South Africa withdrew because of a crammed schedule and the launch of its domestic Twenty20 competition.
Cricket Australia on Wednesday said the scheduled ODIs in January in Hobart, Sydney and Perth against South Africa had been scrapped and dates and venues for other international matches were revised.
The ODI series was to be part of the International Cricket Council’s Super League which determines direct qualification for the 50-over World Cup in 2023.
“Given these games will not be played before the qualification cut-off date in May, (South Africa) has agreed that Australia will be awarded the competition points pending ICC approval,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

Cricket South Africa is set to launch at new domestic Twenty20 league in January and wanted its leading players available for the tournament.
Australia will host South Africa in a three-test series starting in Brisbane on Dec. 17 and scheduled to end in Sydney on Jan. 8.
Before then, Australia will host Zimbabwe, New Zealand, West Indies and England in white-ball series from late August ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup from Oct. 16-Nov. 13. The Australians will then play England in a three-game ODI series and West Indies in a two-test series in Perth and Adelaide.
Australia’s men’s team returned this week from a tour to Sri Lanka that included Twenty20 and one-day international series and two test matches.
South Africa police say 15 killed in bar shooting in Soweto
A mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg’s Soweto township has killed 15 people and left others in critical condition, according to police.
Police say they are investigating reports that a group of men arrived in a minibus taxi and opened fire on some of the patrons at the bar shortly after midnight Sunday.
Those injured have been taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
The number of cartridges found on the scene indicates that a group of people opened fire in the bar, said Gauteng province police commissioner Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela.

“The primary investigation suggests that these people were enjoying themselves here, in a licensed tavern operating within the right hours,” Mawela told The Associated Press.
“All of a sudden they heard some gunshots, that is when people tried to run out of the tavern. We don’t have the full details at the moment of what is the motive, and why they were targeting these people,” he said.
“You can see that a high caliber firearm was used and it was shooting randomly. You can see that every one of those people were struggling to get out of the tavern,” Mawela told The Associated Press.
The area where the shooting took place was very dark, making it harder to find people who could identify the suspects, he said.
Rifles and a 9 mm pistol were used in the attack, said national police spokeswoman Col. Dimakatso Sello.

In a separate incident, four people were shot dead by unknown gunmen at a tavern in Sweetwaters township in the coastal city of Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night.
According to the police, two men entered the tavern and randomly opened fire on the patrons, killing two people on the scene while two others were confirmed dead at the hospital. Police said 8 other people are receiving treatment in a hospital. The deceased were aged between 30 and 45 and police are investigating charges of murder and attempted murder, police said.
“The team will be working around the clock to track down and bring to book those responsible for this shooting”, said Kwazulu-Natal police commissioner Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The bar shootings come two weeks after 21 teenagers were found dead in a tavern in the city of East London. The cause of those deaths has not yet been announced by authorities, but the teens were not shot nor crushed in a stampede, according to officials.
T20 series: Klaasen gives South Africa 2-0 lead over India
Heinrich Klaasen hit 81 runs off 46 balls as South Africa beat India by four wickets with almost two overs to spare in their second T20 international Sunday.
The Proteas took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Klaasen's innings, including seven fours and five sixes, turned the game after South Africa struggled against the new ball. The visitors finished at 149-6 in 18.2 overs in reply to India's 148-6.
Put in to bat, India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad (1) in the first over. He was caught off Kagiso Rabada who returned 1-15 in four overs.
Ishan Kishan (34 off 21) and Shreyas Iyer then put on 45 runs for the second wicket. But it was a slow partnership, off 35 balls, on a tricky batting wicket.
Anrich Nortje (2-36) provided the breakthrough, with Kishan out caught. He hit two fours and three sixes in his innings.
Iyer top-scored for India with 40 off 35 as South Africa's bowlers squeezed the middle overs. He only added 20 runs with captain Rishabh Pant (5), who was caught off Keshav Maharaj (1-12).
Wayne Parnell bowled Hardik Pandya (9) before Iyer was caught behind off Dwaine Pretorius (1-40).
India were reduced to 98-5 in 13.5 overs before Dinesh Karthik steadied the innings. He scored 30 not out off 21 balls, including two fours and two sixes, but it was still a sub-par total for India. Only three batters for India crossed 20.
In reply, South Africa were reduced to 29-3 in 5.3 overs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's burst of 3-10 in the powerplay overs pegged back the Proteas.
He bowled Reeza Hendricks (4) in the first over and Rassie van der Dussen (1) in the sixth over.
Skipper Temba Bavuma held anchor with 35 off 30, while Klaasen eased the pressure with some fierce hitting.
South Africa reached 57-3 at the halfway stage but Bavuma released the pressure with three fours off Hardik (0-31).
Klaasen took on the Indian spinners and brought up his half-century off 32 balls.
The duo added 64 runs off 41 balls for the fourth wicket before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Bavuma.
Klaasen then teamed up with David Miller (20 not out) as the pair took 23 runs off Chahal's 17th over to turn the game in South Africa's favour.
South Africa won the first game in Delhi by seven wickets. India did not make any changes Sunday to their team from that game. South Africa made two changes. Quinton de Kock missed out due to a hand injury, and Tristan Stubbs was left out.
The third T20 is at Visakhapatnam Tuesday.
