T20 World Cup: Passionate New Zealand or fortunate Pakistan, who will march to final?
New Zealand and Pakistan are all set to take on each other in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 tomorrow at the famed Sydney Cricket Ground.
New Zealand has demonstrated their passion throughout the tournament whereas Pakistan mostly rode on their fortune.
New Zealand marched to the semi as the champions of Group 1 in the Super 12 stage where they beat Australia, Sri Lanka and Ireland, and lost to England. The other match against Afghanistan ended with no result due to bad weather.

And Pakistan, on the other hand, experienced a dramatic run in the Super 12 stage. They lost close matches to India and Zimbabwe and were on the verge of elimination. But the Netherlands had created a great opportunity for them by beating South Africa.
That historic win of the Netherlands transformed the Super 12 clash between Bangladesh and Pakistan into a virtual quarter-final in which Pakistan defeated the Bangladesh team, and progressed to the semi-final.
Now, the South Asian giants are eager to pass the New Zealand challenge to advance to the final of T20 World Cup 2022.
The semi-final came as a golden chance for New Zealand as well. Who have played three World Cup finals before and failed to win any of them. Now, once again, they are upbeat to book a final berth and clinch the title.

Both New Zealand and Pakistan are unbeaten at the Sydney Cricket Ground. New Zealand beat the hosts Australia on this ground while Pakistan dealt with South Africa.
Ahead of tomorrow’s semi-final, New Zealand played three T20 World Cup semi-finals before and won only one of them while Pakistan played five T20 World Cup semi-finals and won two of them.
The match will begin at 2pm (Bangladesh time) on Wednesday.
The second semi-final will be played between the other South Asian giant India and current 50-over champions England on Thursday at 2pm (Bangladesh time) at Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
T20 World Cup: New Zealand beat Ireland by 35 runs
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson posted a half century and his spinners checked Ireland’s scoring rate in a 35-run win Friday that gave the Black Caps a strong chance of securing a semifinal spot at the Twenty20 World Cup.
Williamson scored 61 off 35 balls as New Zealand reached 185-6 after being sent in to bat, his innings negating Ireland pace bowlers Josh Little’s hat trick — only the second of this tournament.

Ireland was restricted to 150-9 in reply, with Lockie Ferguson taking 3-22 for New Zealand while spinners Mitchell Santner (2-26) and Ish Sodhi (2-31) took key wickets at the top of the order.
New Zealand has seven points from five games and its high net run-rate of 2.113 makes it favorite to finish atop Group 1 ahead of England and Australia.
The Australians were without skipper Aaron Finch for their last Super 12 game against Afghanistan later Friday, when they needed to win by a big margin to improve their chances of qualification. England will play Sri Lanka in Sydney on Saturday.
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to field. Matthew Wade was leading Australia in the absence of Finch, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
New Zealand started against Ireland knowing it needed a win to keep its chances of advancing alive.
Fabian Allen made a rapid star, scoring 32 off 18 balls including five boundaries and a six.
Allen put on 52 off 35 balls in an opening stand with Devon Conway (28), who later added another 44 runs with Williamson for the second wicket.
Williamson accelerated in the second half of the innings, hitting five fours and three sixes overall. He reached his half-century off 32 balls.

“I was just trying to build partnerships. The openers set up the total. The spinners bowled brilliantly to help us win the game,” Williamson said.
Little changed the complexion of New Zealand’s innings in the 19th over, when he dismissed Williamson, Jimmy Neesham and Santner in succession to claim a hat-trick.
It was only the second hat-trick in this tournament after Karthik Meiyappan’s feat against Sri Lanka in the preliminary round.
Daryl Mitchell scored 31 not out off 21 balls to propel his side to a par-plus score.
In reply, Ireland raced to 68-1 in 8.1 overs. Andrew Balbirnie (30) and Paul Stirling (37) made quick starts, hitting three fours and four sixes between them.
New Zealand’s spin attack brought it back into the game, with Sodhi bowling Stirling to really turn the game in the 10th over and then dismissing No. 3 Lorcan Tucker (13) in the 15th.
Santner took the first wicket when he bowled Balbirnie and having Harry Tector (2) caught at point as Ireland was reduced to 94-4 in 13.1 overs.
George Dockrell scored 23 off 15. None of the last five Irish batters reached double digits.

Tri-Series: A great team effort helps Pakistan lift the trophy!
From the beginning itself, they were the clear favourites to win the Tri-Series. And now, they have emerged as the champions -- beating the hosts in a tricky chase.
Pakistan lifted the Tri-Series trophy, winning against New Zealand by five wickets with three balls win in hand on Friday in Christchurch. Pakistan lost only once in this series to New Zealand, but in the final, they kept their nerve strong till the end.

Pakistan needed to score 164 to win the series. They scored 29 in the opening partnership — a relatively slow start from them. But they were firm against the New Zealand bowling attack.
Babar Azam fell as the first wicket scoring 15 off 14 balls, while Mohammad Rizwan posted 34. Both of them had hit a fifty each while chasing 173 against Bangladesh before the final.
Haider Ali’s 15-ball 31 helped accelerate the scoring when they needed it the most. In the fourth wicket stand, Nawaz and Haider added 56 runs off just 26 balls — this partnership effectively pushed the match Pakistan’s way.
On the sixth wicket, Nawaz and Iftikhar Ahmed added 36 off 20 balls and that finished the match. Iftikhar scored 25 off 14 balls with a winning shot, a six, off Blair Tickner in the third ball of the last over.
None of the Pakistani batters scored a fifty or a 40, but they demonstrated a team effort while chasing a big total.
For New Zealand, Michael Bracewell, who was outstanding throughout the event, bagged two wickets in the final, but his effort was not enough for the Blackcaps to avoid a defeat.
Earlier, Pakistan bowled first in this match after winning the toss. New Zealand scored 163 runs for seven wickets with the captain, Kane Williamson, leading the way, hitting 59 off 38 balls.

New Zealand lost Finn Allen, the opener, in the last ball of the first over. Before falling prey to Naseem Shah, he hit three fours and scored 12 off just six balls. Devon Conway, the other opener, also couldn't go big in the final.
For Pakistan, Naseem and Haris Rauf bagged two wickets each.
This win will surely boost the confidence of the Asian giant ahead of their T20 World Cup campaign starting this month in Australia.
Tri-series 3rd T20: Bangladesh tumble for 137 vs New Zealand
Bangladesh posted 137 for 8 wickets against New Zealand in their second match of the ongoing Tri-Series in Christchurch today.
Bangladesh made two changes in this match — Mustafizur Rahman and Sabbir Rahman have been overlooked to pave the way for Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan.
Bangladesh lost the toss and were sent to bat first.
Shanto, who was playing his first match in this event replacing Sabbir Rahman, scored 33 off 29 balls while Nurul Hasan Sohan posted 25 off just 12 balls with two sixes.
Bangladesh lost wickets in regular intervals. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has been establishing himself as an opener, scored 5 in this match.

Afif Hossain posted 24 while Shakib scored 16. The Bangladesh captain, Shakib, made a comeback after the UAE series but his inclusion didn't change the fragile batting approach of Bangladesh.
Mosaddek Hossain (2) and Yasir Ali (7) failed to do well this time.
For the hosts, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Micheal Bracewell and Ish Sodhi bagged two wickets.
Before this match, both Bangladesh and New Zealand lost their respective first matches to Pakistan.
T20 Tri-Series: Bangladesh take on New Zealand on Sunday
Aiming to bounce back in the Tri-Series, Bangladesh is set to take on the hosts New Zealand on Sunday.
The match will begin at 12 pm (Bangladesh Time) in Christchurch.
In the first match of the competition, Bangladesh lost to Pakistan by 21 runs.
Shakib Al Hasan, the regular captain of Bangladesh, is also set to make a comeback in Sunday’s match. He couldn't play the first match due to jet lag— he joined the national team on Thursday after taking part in CPL in the West Indies.
It was learnt that Shakib couldn't buy an air ticket to New Zealand in time due to heavy demand, and eventually, it made him unable to take part in the first match of the event.
After the defeat in the first match, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Bangladesh’s stand-in captain, said they have to improve in certain areas to do well in T20Is.

Bangladesh might bring a change in the opening slots. Sabbir Rahman, who was playing as an experimental opener, has failed to justify his inclusion. But the other opener, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who is also in an experimental phase, has done well so far.
Mustafizur Rahman might also lose his place in the playing XI. He conceded 48 runs in his stipulated four overs in the last match, without taking any wickets.
On Saturday, New Zealand took on Pakistan and lost the match by six wickets. Pakistan chased down a target of 148 with 10 balls to play.
After playing this Tri-Series, all the participating teams will fly to Australia to take part in the T20 World Cup. All these three teams have secured their places in the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup.
Tigers to leave for New Zealand on Friday
Bangladesh cricket team will leave for New Zealand on Friday.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia next month, Bangladesh will participate in a tri-series T20 in New Zealand that also involves Pakistan.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already announced the New Zealand tri-series and World Cup squad.
Recently, Bangladesh played a two-match T20I series against the UAE and Bangladesh won 2-0. In this series, Afif Hossain has done well for the Tigers. But right-handed batter Sabbir Rahman, who played as an opener, failed to impress.
Bangladesh made a change to their staff— team manager Nafis Iqbal has been removed, and senior media manager Rabeed Imam has been appointed as the new team manager.
Media reports said the players are not happy to see Nafis as the team manager.

The first match of the tri-series will take place on October 7 when Bangladesh will take on Pakistan. The Tigers will get at least four matches in this event.
Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, missed the UAE series for CPL. But he will join the Bangladesh team in New Zealand. In his absence, Nurul Hasan Sohan led Bangladesh in the UAE series.

5 dead after New Zealand boat flips in possible whale strike
Five people died Saturday in New Zealand after the small charter boat they were aboard capsized, authorities say, in what may have been a collision with a whale. Another six people aboard the boat were rescued.
Police said the 8.5-meter (28-foot) boat overturned near the South Island town of Kaikōura. Police said they were continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.
Kaikōura Police Sergeant Matt Boyce described it as a devastating and unprecedented event.
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved, including the victims and their families, their local communities, and emergency services personnel,” Boyce said.
He said police divers had recovered the bodies of all those who had died. He said all six survivors were assessed to be in stable condition at a local health center, with one transferred to a hospital in the city of Christchurch as a precaution.
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle told The Associated Press that the water was dead calm at the time of the accident and the assumption was that a whale had surfaced from beneath the boat.
He said there were some sperm whales in the area and also some humpback whales traveling through.
He said locals had helped with the rescue efforts throughout the day but the mood in the town was “somber” because the water was so cold and they feared for the outcome of anybody who had fallen overboard.

Mackle said he’d thought in the past about the possibility of a boat and whale colliding, given the number of whales that frequent the region.
“It always plays on your mind that it could happen,” he said, adding that he hadn’t heard about any previous such accidents.
Mackle said the boat was a charter vessel typically used for fishing excursions. News agency Stuff reported the passengers belonged to a bird enthusiasts' group.
Police said they were still notifying the relatives of those who died, and couldn't yet publicly name the victims.
Vanessa Chapman told Stuff she and a group of friends had watched the rescue efforts unfold from Goose Bay, near Kaikōura. She said that when she arrived at a lookout spot, she could see a person sitting atop an overturned boat waving their arms.
She said two rescue helicopters and a third local helicopter were circling before two divers jumped out. She told Stuff that the person atop the boat was rescued and a second person appeared to have been pulled from the water.
Kaikōura is a popular whale-watching destination. The seafloor drops away precipitously from the coast, making for deep waters close to the shore. A number of businesses offer boat trips or helicopter rides so tourists can see whales, dolphins and other sea creatures up close.
Compliance agency Maritime New Zealand said it sent two investigators to the scene and would be conducting a thorough investigation once recovery operations had concluded.
Principal Investigator Tracy Phillips said the agency “offers its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the people who have died.”
New Zealand's new envoy presents his credentials to President Hamid
New Zealand's newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh David Gregory Pine presented his credentials to President Abdul Hamid on Monday at Bangabhaban.
The new envoy was given a guard of honor by a smart contingent of the Presidential Guard Regiment when he arrived at Bangabhaban in the afternoon.
During the meeting, the President said that New Zealand was the first country to recognize Bangladesh after independence. Bangladesh's relationship with New Zealand is very good and this relationship is gradually expanding in many dimensions.
Thanking New Zealand for providing duty-free access to Bangladeshi products, the President said this will further expand trade and investment.

Meanwhile, the President urged New Zealand investors to come forward to invest in the livestock sector of Bangladesh.
He said that Bangladesh produces various types of world-class products including sea-going ships, clothes, medicines, ceramics. New Zealand can import these products from Bangladesh.
The new High Commissioner of New Zealand sought the full cooperation of the President while performing his duties. He will be based out of New Delhi, India with joint accreditation for Bangladesh as well.
Secretaries to the President were also present on the occasion.
New Zealand beats Windies by 90 runs, leads T20 series 2-0
Glenn Phillips struck a half century from 33 balls to propel New Zealand to a 90-run win over the West Indies in the second Twenty20 international on Friday, clinching the three-match series with a 2-0 lead.
After reaching his fifth T20 half century, Phillips went on to 76 from 40 balls and led New Zealand to 215-5 as it batted after winning the toss, exceeding the 185-5 that was a winning total in the first match of the series. His innings included six sixes and four fours.
The West Indies managed only 125-9 in reply, lacking the partnerships that underpinned a New Zealand total which was the highest by a visiting team against the West Indies in a T20 in the Caribbean.
Phillips put on 71 for the third wicket with Devon Conway who made 42 from 34 balls and 83 with Daryl Mitchell who made 48 from 20.
The West Indies’ best were stands of 35 for the seventh wicket between Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell which began when the home team was 40-6 and the match probably was already lost. Hayden Walsh (10) and Obed McCoy (23) put on 38 in an unbroken stand for the last wicket.
Phillips put to good use his knowledge of conditions at Sabina Park, which is his home ground in the Caribbean Premier League.
“Coming back to Sabina Park is amazing. I’ve got great memories here,” Phillips said in a television interview. “Being able to get a 50 for my country over here in front of a crowd which I really love is definitely very special for me.
“Credit to the West Indies for the way they bowled up front with the new ball which was really, really good in terms of taking the pace off the ball when it was new and harder. As it got older the pitch became a bit nicer to bat on.”
Seven West Indies wickets fell to spin bowlers, including the first four of the innings.

Mitchell Santner, who was Man of the Match for his 3-19 in the first match, took a wicket with his first ball and two wickets in his opening over to set back the West Indies’ run chase.
Off spinner Michael Bracewell, who replaced fast bowler Lockie Ferguson in the New Zealand lineup, also took a wicket with his first delivery, dismissing captain Nicholas Pooran (1) as the West Indies slumped to 12-3 at the start of the fourth over.
Santner and Bracewell both finished with 3-15 while Ish Sodhi took 1-36. Tim Southee took the only wicket which fell to a fast bowler, removing Odean Smith at the tail and returning 1-34.
Shimron Hetmeyer was the first batsman not to fall to a spin bowler, run out by a direct hit at the bowlers end by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. The West Indies were 28-5 at that point and couldn’t recover.
“We just didn’t show up today,” Pooran said. “They batted us out of it and we couldn’t see our way with the bat. We had to stay in the game. It just didn’t start well for us. We are struggling but the more cricket we play our performance will grow.”
The final T20 will be played on Sunday at the same venue, followed by three one-day internationals.
