In-laws held over death of woman in Sirajganj
Police detained parents-in-laws in connection with murder of a housewife in Tarash upazila in Sirajganj Saturday allegedly by her husband.
The deceased was Nasima Khatun, 22, from Chak Jhurjhuri village.
According to neighbours, Nasima before her death alleged her husband Sumon and three of his associates tried to kill her.
Nasima and Sumon were married seven years ago and they have two children. Due to Nasima’s feud with her in-laws Sumon took her to Dhaka few days ago but they returned home on Friday evening.
Around 3 am Saturday, neighbor Somej Ali and others spotted Sumon and some people trying to strangle Nasima beside a pond.
Sumon and his associates fled the spot immediately seeing them. Later neighbours rescued Nasima and took to her husband’s house but no one opened the gate. At that time Nasima breathed her last.

Later, locals locked Sumon’s father Sarwar Hossain,55, and mother Firoza Begum,50, in their house and informed police, said Officer-in-Charge of Tarash police station.
The body has been sent for an autopsy and Sumon’s parents have been taken into police custody for questioning, said OC Shahidul Islam.
A FIR was lodged at Tarash police station and efforts are on to arrest the absconding accused, he said.
Nine held with drugs, liquor in Jashore
In three separate drives, members of law enforcement agencies detained nine people, including eight Indian nationals, over possessing contraband drugs and foreign liquor from different parts of Jashore on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) conducted a drive in the district’s Churipotti area and detained six people with 18 bottles of Indian liquor on Thursday noon.
According to Rab-6 Jashore Company Commander Lieutenant M Najiur Rahman, all six of the detainees are Indian nationals.
In another development, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive in the district’s Ashram Mor area and arrested two Indian nationals with 2,500 pieces of Tapentadol tablets, 40 bottles of local and nine bottles of Indian liquor on the same day.

Meanwhile, Jashore Kotwali Police informed that they arrested a local youth with 23 bottles of Phensedyl from the district’s Barandipara Dhaka Bridge area on Thursday night.
Three separate cases have been filed with Jashore’s Kotwali Police station in this regard. Later, the detainees were sent to jail following the court’s order.
Eight held over killing teenager in Cumilla
Police have arrested eight Dakhil examinees for killing a college student in front of an exam center in Cumilla on Thursday.
The victim has been identified as Md Siam, 17, son of Helal Uddin Sarker of Char Mohonpur village under Cumilla’s Titas upazila. He was a first year student of Munshiganj Technical College.
The arrestees are Sakib Hasan, 19, son Joy Mia, Nazmul Hasan, 19, son of Nazir Hasan, Jonayed Islam Shuvo, 17, Saimun Mia, 19, son of Shafiq Mia, Masum Billah Rony, 19, son of Awlad Hasan, Omar Faruk, 19, son of Nurul Haque, Junayed Ahmed Sourav, 19, son of Abul Kashem and Mukul Ahmed Rabi, 17, son of Md Helal.

According to police, accused Nazmul had a love affair with a cousin of Siam. An enmity was ensuing between the two as Siam was opposing the relationship and deterring Nazmul from visiting the area where the girl lived.
The killing occurred when Siam took his brother to Titas upazila’s Gazipur Azizia Senior Dakhil Madrassah for attending an exam on Thursday. Finding Siam alone, Nazmul and his accomplices swooped on him and at one point, hacked him to death with a knife.
“Siam’s father Helal filed a murder case accusing Nazmul and seven others on Thursday night, based on which the arrests were made. The eight accused have been sent to jail through the court on Friday,” said Sudhin Chandra Das, Officer In-charge (OC) of Titas Police Station.
Human chain in Kurigram demands arrest of livestock thieves
Villagers formed a human chain demanding the arrest of livestock thieves in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram on Friday.
The human chain on Matherganj Bazar Road under the upazila lasted an hour in the morning.
Villagers of Char Krishnapur organized the unusual human chain to draw the attention of the authorities to rampant thieves in the area targeting farmers' cows and buffaloes.
The farmers at the human chain said they were forced to mobilise such a programme after failing to get justice.

Rather they were subjected to attacks by the thieves when they appealed seeking justice.
On behalf of the villagers, farmers Anwar Hossain, Abdul Khalek, Habibur Rahman spoke at the programme.
Youth held under DSA for 'hurting religious sentiment' in Moulvibazar
Police have arrested a youth on allegations of hurting religious sentiments under the Digital Security Act (DSA) in Moulvibazar on Friday evening.
The youth has been identified as Pritom Das, an activist of an organization called Rashtra Sanskar Andolon.
According to police, Pritom shared a quote of Pakistani writer Sadat Hasan Manto on Facebook on July 7. His post created unrest as screenshots of the post became widespread.

On August 29, a local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader shared the screenshot of Pritom’s post and asked the authorities to take action against him. On August 31, locals brought out a procession demanding the arrest of Pritom, after which he went into hiding.
Last week, Mahbub Alam Bhuiyan, a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist, filed a case against Pritom, based on which police made the arrest, said Humayun Kabir, Inspector (Investigation) of Srimangal Police Station.
Man arrested for raping minor girl in Kurigram
A 60-year-old man was arrested on charge of violating a minor girl in Phulbari upazila of the district on Friday.
The arrestee is Nazrul Sai, son of late Bogruddin of Pachhim Phulmati village under the upazila.
Locals said the three-year-old girl went to the house of the accused to play with other children like other days on Friday morning.
The accused tactfully took her to his house and raped her, they said.

Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued her from the clutches of the vicious Nazrul.
Fazlur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbari police station, said the accused was handed over to police after the detention.
A case under ‘Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act’ was filed against him, he said adding that the accused was sent to jail through a Kurigram court later.
The rape survivor sent to Kurigram Sadar hospital for a medical test, the OC added.
13 arrested over recovery of counterfeit fertilizer in Bogura
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 13 people accused in a case filed over the recovery of counterfeit TSP fertilizers brought from Chattogram for a gowdown in Bogura on Thursday night.
The elite force rounded them up from the buffer warehouse of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) in Tinmatha area of the Bogura town.
The arrestees are identified as Nur Hossain, Abul Bashar, Jasim, Sohail, Asadul, Babu, Abdul Awal, Tarek, Shakil, another Shakil, Hanif, Jahangir Alam and Shah Alam. They are the drivers and helpers of the trucks that carried the fertilizer.
Md Towhidul Mobin Khan, squadron leader of Rab-12, disclosed the news of the arrest at a press conference at his office on Friday.
He said 17 trucks of M/S MHR Corporation, which was appointed to carry the fertilizers to Buffer godown of the BCIC in Bogura from Chattogram, started their journey from the port city on August 27.
Drivers and helpers of seven trucks unloaded real fertilizers from their vehicles and replaced them with counterfeit ones during a stopover in Savar area of Dhaka, the Rab officer said.
The drivers and helpers of the seven trucks numbering 13 people were arrested from the Buffer godown on the arrival of the test report on Thursday night, he said.

Reacting to the incident, the authority of TSP fertilizer factory in Chattogram formed a three member probe committee headed by its Manager (Admin) Mazharul Islam and asked for a report within three working days.
The probe body collected samples from the all trucks and sent them to the two respective labs for experiment.
Md Shahidul Islam, chief scientific officer of Rajshahi Soil Resource Development Institute, said they found evidence of counterfeit fertilizers in the samples collected from seven out of the 17 trucks.
Acting on the test report, TSP fertilizer factory Officer Mazharul filed the case against 14 people including the M/S MHR Corporation’s owner Moazzem Hossain at the local police station.
Selim Reza, Officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, said efforts are on to nab the main accused Moazzem.
Police again arrest Jumon Das in DSA case
Police have once again arrested Jhumon Das in a new case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for inciting violence through sharing a Facebook post.
Officer In-charge (OC) of Sunamganj’s Shalla Police Station Aminul Islam confirmed the matter, saying that Jhumon was taken into custody on Tuesday morning.
“After questioning for 12 hours, Jhumon was shown arrested in a case filed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Sumonur Rahman,” said the OC.
According to the arrestee’s brother Nupur Das, Jhumon had shared a photo on Facebook showing a donation box of a local mosque inside a temple, which created unrest in the area.
“Police detained my brother on Tuesday morning. Prior to the detention, police followed him for two days. Police have also seized Jhumon’s mobile phone and deleted some posts. When Jhumon’s wife went to the police station in the evening, she was told that Jhumon will be freed after questioning. Instead of doing that, police showed my brother arrested at midnight,” said Nupur.

Jhumon came to light on March 16, 2021, when he posted a status on Facebook accusing Mamunul Haque, joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, of damaging communal harmony.
Mamunul’s followers started to spread the post as an attack on Islam, which resulted into hundreds of people attacking Jhumon’s house in Noagaon village. To prevent the situation from getting worse, locals sent Jhumon to police custody.
Later, Jhumon was arrested in a case filed on March 22, 2021. After cancelling Jhumon’s bail plea five times, the High Court finally granted him bail on conditions after six months of his arrest.
An elderly woman hacked to death, son detained in Joypurhat
A 66-year-old woman was hacked to death allegedly by miscreants in Sonar Potty-Haribasor Mondir Morr area of the district town on Friday noon, said police.
Law enforcers, however, detained the victim’s drug addicted son identified as Nishit Kumar Kundu, 31, in this connection.
The deceased is identified as Josna Kundu, wife of Hari Kundu of the same area.
Mohammad Nure Alam, Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district, said the victim along with her son used to live at their own house in the Mandir area.
Being informed by neighbours, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the house around 12.30pm and sent it to Joypurhat Ahdunik Zilla Hospital morgue for autopsy, the SP said adding that her son was found in a drunken condition at the house.
“In the preliminary observation it seems that the woman has been hacked to death with sharp weapons,” he suspected.

The reason for the death will be known following the autopsy, he said adding that the victim’s son has been being quizzed in this connection as he is known to be a drug addict.
Several teams from Criminal Investigation Department and Detective Branch have already inspected the spot and collected samples in this connection, the SP added.
Man held for wife's murder in Sylhet
Police on Wednesday arrested a man after recovering the body of his wife from a locked room in Sylhet city a day before.
The arrestee has been identified as Ismail Niaz Khan, son of Ismat Khan of the area.
"The body of Afia Begum was found in the room in the Baluchar area of the city on Tuesday night," said Syed Aminur Rahman, officer in-charge of Shah Poran Police Station.
The couple's two-year-old baby girl was rescued alive and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, he said.

Based on a complaint from Kutina Begum, Afia’s mother, a murder case was lodged at Shah Poran Police Station, based on which the arrest was made.
“Everyone knew that Ismail used to live in Oman, which was not the case. Besides, there is no document of the marriage between Ismail and Afia. We are quizzing Ismail for further information,” said the OC.
"Prior to her marriage with Ismail, Afia was married to another person, named Ashraf, but that marriage didn’t last long," he added.
