Police say 6 dead, 10 injured in California shooting
Police in California are searching for at least one suspect in connection with a mass shooting early Sunday in downtown Sacramento that claimed six lives and left 10 other people injured.
Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said at a news conference that police were patrolling the area at about 2 a.m. when they heard gunfire. When they arrived at the scene, they found a large crowd gathered on the street and six people dead. Another 10 either took themselves or were transported to hospitals. No information was given on their conditions.
Authorities don't know whether one or more suspects were involved and are asking for the public's help in identifying who is responsible. Lester did not give specifics on the type of gun used.
This is “a very complex and complicated scene,” she said. Lester issued a plea to the public, asking for witnesses or anyone with recordings of the incident to contact police.

Shortly after the shooting, video was posted on Twitter that showed people running through the street amid the sound of rapid gunfire. Video showed multiple ambulances at the scene.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said on Twitter: “Words can’t express my shock & sadness this morning. The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend. We await more information about exactly what transpired in this tragic incident.”
Residents were asked to avoid the area, which is packed with restaurants and bars, including the London nightclub.
Kay Harris, 32, said she was asleep when one of her family members called to say they thought her brother had been killed. She said she thought he was at London.
Harris said she has been to the club a few times and described it as a place for “the younger crowd.” Bars and clubs close at 2 a.m. and it's normal for streets to be full of people at that hour.
She has spent the morning circling the block waiting for news.
“Very much so a senseless violent act,” she said.
Police have the streets around the club closed, with yellow police tape fluttering in the early morning breeze.

Oscars producer says police offered to arrest Will Smith
Oscars producer Will Packer said Los Angeles police were ready to arrest Will Smith after Smith slapped Chris Rock on the Academy Awards stage.
“They were saying, you know, this is battery, was a word they used in that moment," Packer said in a clip released by ABC News Thursday night of an interview he gave to “Good Morning America.” “They said we will go get him. We are prepared. We’re prepared to get him right now. You can press charges, we can arrest him. They were laying out the options.”
But Packer said Rock was “very dismissive” of the idea.
“He was like, ‘No, no, no, I’m fine,” Packer said. "And even to the point where I said, ‘Rock, let them finish.’ The LAPD officers finished laying out what his options were and they said, ‘Would you like us to take any action?’ And he said no.”

The LAPD said in a statement after Sunday night's ceremony that they were aware of the incident, and that Rock had declined to file a police report. The department declined comment Thursday on Packer's interview, a longer version of which will air on Friday morning.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct. Smith could be suspended, expelled or otherwise sanctioned.
The academy said in a statement that “Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television."
Without giving specifics, the academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, but refused to do so.
Smith strode from his front row seat on to the stage and slapped Rock after a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, when he was on stage to present the Oscar for best documentary.
On Monday, Smith issued an apology to Rock, the academy and to viewers, saying “I was out of line and I was wrong.”

Govt let loose police against BNP, alleges Rizvi
BNP senior joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday alleged that the government has let loose law enforcers like "hyenas" against its leaders and activists out of fear of facing public wraths.
“The Illegal political forces are always sacred of facing public wraths. They get terrified with the loud voices of people. That’s why they've let loose the law enforcement agencies like hyenas to foil BNP’s different programmes,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, Rizvi also said the government is shedding the blood of opposition activists through attacking political programmes of the opposition by law enforcers at different parts of the country.
He accused the government of establishing its control over every constitutional institution from the Election Commission to the judiciary by appointing people who hold the spirit of Awami League. “The entire nation has been colonised by the government by placing its own people everywhere.
The BNP leader said the government has obliterated democracy and snatched the civic and voting rights of people by usurping power.

“They (govt) are using the state machinery to brutally suppress the democracy-loving dissidents. The same way, they’re now using its cadres and police force to obstruct BNP programmes across the country,” he observed.
The BNP leader said police and the ruling party cadres resorted to various repressive acts to foil their rallies arranged for protesting the hike in daily essential in Dhaka’s Savar, Patuakhali, Magura and Jhalakati.
He said police attacked their party’s peaceful rally on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar without any provocation. “They charged batons on our leaders and activists, leaving at least 15 of them injured.”
