Coronavirus: Japan includes Bangladesh in widened entry ban
Japan has tightened border control and widened ban on entry of people from countries, including Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
A notice on the website of Japan’s foreign ministry posted on Monday said the embargo will come into effect from Wednesday.
The newly-included countries are – Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, El Salvador, Ghana, Guinea, India, Kyrgyz, Pakistan, South Africa, and Tajikistan.
With these countries, Japan’s entry ban has been extended to 111 countries and regions, including the United States, most of Asia including China and South Korea, and all of Europe.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the restrictions will be in place “for the time being”.
“For the time being, foreign nationals categorised below are denied permission to enter Japan as ones who fall under the Article 5, paragraph (1), item (xiv) of Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, unless exceptional circumstances are found,” the foreign ministry notice said.
Coronavirus: Global cases near 5.5 million
The number of globally confirmed coronavirus cases inched closer to 5.5 million on Tuesday as the death toll climbed to 346,232, according to the Centre for System Science and Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University.
Among the countries, the US has been the worst-hit with the highest recorded deaths of 98,220 patients and about 1.7 million confirmed cases.

According to worldometer data, the confirmed coronavirus cases in various countries of the world are now 5, 194,106.
With the confirmed cases and casualties, the number of recovered patients is also rising as it was 2,080,923 on Friday morning, which is 86 percent of the total cases, the worldometer data revealed.
According to worldometer data, currently, 2,778,567 confirmed COVID-19 patients are being treated and 45,620 of them are in serious or critical condition.
Coronavirus, first reported in China in December last year, is highly infectious and spread to over 213 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
The US has been the worst-hit country having the highest number of infections and deaths – more than 1,620,902 cases and 96,354 deaths.
Meanwhile, Russia has reached the second position with 317,554cases and 3,099 deaths.
The UK has the second-highest death toll of 36,042 followed by Spain with 27,940.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
Bangladesh has so far confirmed 28,511cases and 408 deaths as the health authorities has detected 1773 new cases with 22 more death till Thursday.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.
Coronavirus: Global cases from Covid-19 reach 5,085, 504
The confirmed coronavirus cases in various countries of the world are now 5,085, 504 while the death tally from the deadly virus climbed to 329,731 as of Thursday morning.
With the confirmed cases and casualties, the number of recovered patients is also rising as it was 2,021,666 on Thursday morning, which is 86 percent of the total cases, the worldometer data revealed.
According to worldometer data, currently, 2,734,107 confirmed COVID-19 patients are being treated and 45,802 of them are in serious or critical condition.
Coronavirus, first reported in China in December last year, is highly infectious and spread to over 213 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
The US has been the worst-hit country having the highest number of infections and deaths – more than 1,591,991cases and 94,994 deaths.
Meanwhile, Russia has reached the second position with 308,705 cases and 2,972 deaths.
The UK has the second-highest death toll of 35,704 followed by Spain with 27,888.

Govt doing everything to tackle coronavirus situation: Health Minister
Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Saturday said the government is doing its best and taking necessary steps to tackle coronavirus situation.
As part of the government’s initiative, it has increased the number of tests and installed 42 laboratories, he said while inaugurating a 200-bed isolation hospital dedicated for Covod-19 patients of Anwer Khan Medical College and Hospital in city’s Dhanmondi area, as chief guest.
Over two million PPE (Personal protective equipment) were collected while over 100,000 testing kits are in store and some 7,000 doctors and nurses have been appointed in seven days, he said.
Besides, the appointments of some technologists are underway and the doctors and nurses were given training, said Zahid Maleque.
The government is also thinking of implementing plasma therapy and remedial medicine like the other developed country, he added.
Talking about the newly-built 200-bed hospital, the Health Minister said, “It'll play an important role in providing health services to the people of the country as its has 10 Intensive Care Units (ICU), 10 HDOs (Health Delivery Organisation) and five ventilators.”
Besides, a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine was installed at the hospital for ensuring Covid-19 test, he said.
With the new Covid-19 hospital, 14 dedicated hospitals were installed in the city which can provide medical services to 15,000-20,000 more people, he added.
The Minister also visited Covid-19 unit of the hospital before inaugurating it and expressed his satisfaction.
Chairman of Anwer Khan Medical College, Anwar Hossain Khan presided over the programme.

Bangladesh on Thursday recorded another big jump in coronavirus cases within a single day as the health authorities confirmed the detection of 1,041 new patients in the last 24 hours, raising the total cases to 18,863.
Coronavirus: 6 of a family test positive in Feni
Seven people, including six members of a family, have been diagnosed with coronavirus in Feni, raising the number of confirmed cases to 26 in the district.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a cleaner of Feni General Hospital is among those found infected on Wednesday.
Global coronavirus death toll nears 300,000
As the number of globally confirmed coronavirus cases near 4.5 million, the death toll too is rising, inching towards 300,000.
On Thursday morning, the global death toll stood at 298,165, according to data compiled by Worldometer.
Confirmed coronavirus cases were 4428,236 at this time.
Worldometer data showed that the number of cases and deaths started going up drastically since mid-March.
Currently, 2,472,248 confirmed COVID-19 patients are being treated and 45,920 of them are in serious or critical condition.
