Man sentenced to life in prison for violating daughter-in-law
A tribunal on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to life imprisonment for violating his daughter-in-law in 2020.
The court also fined Tk one lakh to the convict identified as Khalil of Mirpur area of the capital, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
Dhaka Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Mafroza Parveen handed down the judgment.
According to the prosecution, the convict Khalil violated his daughter-in-law when she was asleep at her house in Mirpur on February 19, 2020.
The woman lodged a complaint against her father-in-law with Mirpur Model Police.
Sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station and also the investigating officer of the case, Khandaker Manjur Rahi, submitted chargesheet against him on February 1, 2022.
7 cops get seven years in jail for kidnapping Cox's Bazar trader
A court in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday sentenced seven policemen, all detectives, to seven years in jail for kidnapping a trader and demanding a ransom of Tk 17 lakh for his release.
Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Court judge Mohammad Ismail handed down the judgment in the presence of all the suspended cops.
The judge also imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh on each of the convicts and ordered them to undergo an additional one year in prison for non-payment of the fine.
The court sentenced the convicted cops to five years in jail for kidnapping and another seven years for extortion by putting a person in fear of death.
As both the sentences will run simultaneously, the convicts will serve a total of seven years in jail, said plaintiff’s lawyer Mohammad Jahangir.
The convicts are sub inspectors Moniruzzaman, 35, and Abul Kalam Azad, 39, additional sub-inspectors Golam Mostafa, 36, Firoz Ahmed, 34, and Alauddin, 32, and constables Mostafa Ajal, 52, and MD Al Amin, 26.
On September 24, 2017, the seven kidnapped Abdul Gafur, a trader hailing from Teknaf and later demanded Tk 17 lakh as ransom from his family by threatening to kill him in a fake encounter, said public prosecutor Faridul Alam.
According to the case complaint, the Bangladesh Army arrested six of the accused with the ransom amount from the Marin Drive in Cox’s Bazar on October 25, 2017.
Later, another absconding detective was arrested by the police.
Abdul, the victim, later filed a complaint with Teknaf police, based on which a case for kidnapping and extortion was lodged.
In August, 2018, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a chargesheet in this case against the seven detectives.
On September 5 this year, the court rejected the bail pleas of the seven cops.
4 get life in jail for selling Khulna woman to Indian brothel
A Khulna tribunal has sentenced four people to life in jail for selling a woman to a brothel in India on the pretext of giving her a job in 2011.
Khulna Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge A Salam Khan handed down the punishment to Sheuli Begum, Hasina, Rahul and Amin. Of them, Hasina and Rahul were tried in absentia.
The tribunal also fined imposed a fine of Tk 20,000 on each of the convicts.

According to the prosecution, the 23-year-old woman lived with her father in a rented accommodation in Gabarchaka. She was a beautician.
Taking advantage of the family's poverty, Sheuli and Hasina took the woman to Dhaka on the pretext of offering her a job at a garment factory on November 21, 2011.
Sensing something wrong, the girl’s father, along with local residents, subsequently put pressure on Sheuli and Hasina and forced them to share her whereabouts.
Later the two admitted to selling the woman to an Indian brothel with the help of two more people. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged with Sonadanga police in this regard.
Natore college teacher's death: Husband sent to jail
A Natore court on Monday sent the husband of college teacher Khairun Nahar, who was found dead at her flat in Natore, to jail in a case filed over the death.
The accused is Mamun Hossain, a second year student Bachelor Degree of Arts (B.A. Pass Course) of Nawab Siraj-Ud-Dowla Government College.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Moslem Uddin passed the order after turning down his bail plea, said Investigation Officer (IO) AJ Mintu, sub-inspector of Natore Sadar police station.
Earlier in the day, Mamun was arrested under the Special Powers Act and handed over to the court police.
A case was filed at Natore Sadar police station on Sunday night, said the SI.
The college teacher Khairun Nahar, 42, who married Mamun last year, was found dead at her rented flat in Boladipara area of the district town on Sunday morning.

The deceased was an assistant professor of Philosophy department of Khubjipur Mozammel Haque Degree College in Gurudaspur upazila of the district.
Police detained Mamun immediately for interrogation in this connection.
Mamun claimed that Khairun committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with her scarf. Later he brought down her body by setting fire to the scarf as he found nothing to cut it off, said Abul Kalam Azad, inspector (investigation) of Natore Sadar Police Station.
Besides, caretaker of the house Khalil told the police that Mamun left the house around 2:00am and returned after an hour.
Then in the morning he called the caretaker informing that his wife Khairun committed suicide.
Subsequently, the caretaker informed the matter to the house owner, putting Mamun under lock and key in the flat till police arrived .
Blackmail behind Sylhet college student's suicide; one sent to jail
A Sylhet court has sent a man to jail for blackmailing a college student who committed suicide in a hostel in Sylhet city two months ago.
The accused is Shyamal Das, 21, of Habiganj district.
Judge Saifur Rahman of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 passed the order on Thursday after recording the accused’s statement.
Syed Anisul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahporan police station,said they arrested Shyamol from Jalalabad residential area of Sylhet and presented him before the court on Thursday.
Shyamal Das gave a confessional statement in the court regarding his involvement in the suicide.

Referring to the statement, the OC said Shyamal hacked into the Facebook messenger of the victim Smriti Rani Das and blackmailed her with her private photos for money.
He took Tk 2,500 from her which she had sent through Bkash before committing suicide.
The police arrested Shyamol after tracking him based on that transaction, said the OC.
A case of instigating suicide was filed at Shahporan police station following a complaint of the victim’s father, said OC Anisul.
On May 25, Smriti, a 21-year-old student of MC College, was found hanging inside a room in her hostel in the Tilagarh area of Sylhet city.
Prof Saleh Ahmed of MC College said Smriti used to stay in a room on the second floor of the hostel but her body was found in an unoccupied room on the third floor.
Industrialist sent to jail over embezzling Tk 18 crore from Sonali Bank in Khulna
A Khulna court on Tuesday sent an industrialist to jail in a case filed over embezzling Tk 18 crore from the corporate branch of Sonali Bank in Khulna.
The accused is Md Salauddin, managing director of Star Sea Food Limited.
Khulna Metropolitan Session Special Judge Mahmuda Khatun passed the order after turning down his bail plea in the case, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khandaker Mujibur Rahman.
Lawyer Lutful Kabir Nowroz and lawyer Selim Howladar appeared for the state in the court.
On August 16 last year, the ACC Deputy Director (Khulna) Md Shaon Miah filed the case against five individuals in the Khulna Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

Md Salauddin, the bank's godown keeper Abdul Mannan Hawladar and grade-2 officer Abdur Rahman Babu were made accused in the case.
On April 28 in 2018, the ACC's investigation showed that Md Salauddin embezzled the loan of Tk 18 crore 50 lakh borrowed from Sonali Bank.
The collateral against this loan was the exportable shrimp kept in the company’s godown.
The bank appointed Abdul Mannan Hawladar and supporting staff Abdur Rahman Babu for godown maintenance as long as the company does not pay back their loan.
However, Managing Director (MD) of Star Sea Food Industries Limited Md Salauddin in collusion with Mannan sold all the exportable shrimps in the local market from July 15 to August 10 of 2017.
The then deputy general manager of the bank Abu Hossain Sheikh found out about the secret fish sale and filed a case with the local police station at that time.
Salahuddin was on bail, said lawyer Mujibur.
2 to die, 2 get life term jail for killing businessperson in Ctg
A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced two people to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing a businessperson in 2016.
Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court-4 Judge Shariful Bhuiya handed down the punishment.
The condemned convicts are Kamal Hossain and Russel while the lifers are Surma Akter and Lilu Akter Ria. Of them, Lilu was tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Jalal Uddin Sagar, of Double Mooring area, was found dead, with his hands and legs tied up, from the north gate of CDA Residential area on October 20, 2016.
Imaz Uddin lodged a complaint with Double Mooring Police. Police registered an FIR after getting the complaint.
On May 28, 2017, police submitted chargesheet against four people.

3 get life in jail for raping minor in Cox’s Bazar
A Cox’s Bazar court has sentenced three men to life in jail for violating a minor girl in 2003.
All the convicts -- Nurul Alam, son of Abdus Salam, Helaluddin, son of Jalal Ahmed, and Mamtaz Mia, son of Kashem of Teknaf upazila -- were tried in absentia.
Cox’s Bazar Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Md Abdur Rahim handed down the punishment to the three on Tuesday and also imposed a fine of Tk one lakh on each of them.
In case of default, the three will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment, the court ruled.
Life imprisonment in Bangladesh means a convict will remain behind bars for 30 years unless specifically mentioned in the order otherwise, according to a 2021 order of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

However, the Cox’s Bazar court exonerated the prime accused in the case -- Nur Mohammad -- who died during the trial.
According to the prosecution, the girl, aged about nine years, was raped by the convicts on April 5, 2003, while she was returning from the hilly area after collecting firewood.
A complaint was lodged with Teknaf Police, following which an FIR was registered in connection with the crime.
On July 1, police submitted a chargesheet against the four, including the prime accused.
7 get 10 years jail for abduction in Khulna
A Khulna court on Thursday sentenced seven people to ten years imprisonment for abducting two people in 2010.
Khulna Special Sessions and Divisional Judge Wahiduzzaman Shikdar handed down the punishment.
The convicts are—Rabiul Islam, Sajuddin alias Shahbuddin, Zahid alias Zahid, Azizul Morol alias Thakur, Raju Molla alias Raju, Yeaz alias Izaz Molla and Nurjamal alias Kalu.
Raju and Izaz were present on the dock while the others were tried in absentia. All were fined Tk 1000, in default, to suffer one month more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, a group of criminals, numbering 20 barged into the fish enclosure of Chinmoy at Hadda village in Koyra upazila on August 12, 2010.

They beat up Chinmoy and his guard Mantu and abducted them. They also demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom for their release.
Later, they were rescued from the Sundarbans after providing Tk 55,000.
Soumen Mandal, owner of an adjacent fish enclosure, lodged complaint against eight people on August 16 with Koyra Police.
On March 9, 2011, police submitted chargesheet against seven people.
Two sent to jail for possessing deer meat in Bhola
Monpura Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Friday sent two people to jail for illegally possessing 8kg deer meat in a case filed by the forest department under Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012.
The two have been identified as Md Arif and Md Shakil, from Dasherhat village of Hazirhat union under the upazila.
According to Md Abbas Ali, Beat Officer of Pocha Koralia forest department, a team led by him detained the two hunters from Charpiyal restricted forest area under Monpura’s South Sakuchia union in a covert operation early Friday.
“Later, we brought them to Monpura forest department’s range office and filed a case against them,” Abbas said.
