5 Rohingyas held with arms and drugs in Ukhia
Five Rohingyas were arrested Sunday with arms and drugs during a joint operation by the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and Ukhia Police in Cox's Bazar’s Ukhia Rohingya camp.
The arrestees were listed criminal Nur Kalam, under-warranted accused Fayez and Md Abul Kalam; Osman and Akter Hossain.

Md Naimul Haque, 14-APBN captain said APBN and Ukhia police conducted a joint operation around 3:30 pm on Sunday. During the operation, five Rohingyas were arrested and a locally made shooter-gun, one round of ammunition and 122 pieces of yaba were seized from them.

According to APBn sources, the arrestees were involved in various crimes including intimidation, extortion and kidnapping of ordinary Rohingyas in the camp area.
UN seeks proper probe into Rohingya leader's killing
The United Nations (UN) has condemned the killing of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah and sought a proper investigation into it.
Mohib (44) was allegedly shot to death at a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazaar by unknown gunmen on September 29.

"The United Nations urges the Bangladesh authorities to undertake an investigation and to hold those responsible to account," said Stephanie Tremblay, Associate Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.
The UN also urged continued strong international support for the protection and support to the Rohingya communities anywhere in the world, including in Bangladesh.

"The UN continues to call for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees and internally displaced persons. The UN will continue to firmly provide its support in this endeavour."
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) also expressed its deep shock and sadness at the killing of Mohib Ullah.
US calls for 'full & transparent' probe into Mohib's murder
The United States has called for a "full and transparent" probe into prominent Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah's killing, with an aim of bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
Mohib (44) was allegedly shot to death at a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh by unknown gunmen on September 29.

American Secretary of State Antony J Blinken said in a statement that the US is "deeply saddened" and "disturbed" by the murder of the Rohingya Muslim advocate and community leader.
"Mohib Ullah was a brave and fierce advocate for the human rights of Rohingya Muslims around the world. We urge a full and transparent investigation into his death with the goal of holding the perpetrators of this heinous crime accountable," he said.
The US Secretary of State said that Mohib travelled to the Human Rights Council in Geneva and to the United States to speak at the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in 2019.

"During his trip, he shared his experiences with the President and Vice President and spoke together with other survivors of religiously motivated persecution," Secretary Blinken said.
"We will honor his work by continuing to advocate for Rohingya and lift up the voices of members of the community in decisions about their future," he added.
Mohib's murder: US, UK envoys express deep shock
US Ambassador Earl R Miller and British High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson have expressed deep shock at the alleged murder of leading Rohingya community leader Mohib Ullah.
Mohib (50) was allegedly shot to death at a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh by unknown gunmen on September 29.

"Saddened and disturbed by the murder of Mohammad Mohib Ullah, a courageous champion of the human rights of the Rohingya community," Miller tweeted.
He offered his condolences to Mohib's family and hoped that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice.
High Commissioner Dickson said that he was shocked and saddened by the murder of Mohib, the leader of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights.
"A tragic loss to his family, friends and the Rohingya community. My sincerest condolences," he tweeted.

The Embassy of the European Union (EU) also tweeted to say that the "murder" of the Rohingya leader and human rights activist "is a tragic event".
"We extend our condolences to his family. We hope that the authorities succeed in bringing to justice those who committed his killing," the Embassy said.
74 Rohingyas held in Chattogram
Police arrested 78 Rohingyas, who fled Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp, from Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram district on Monday night.
Sumon Kanti Dey, sub-inspector of Boalkhali Police Station, said the Rohigyas were working at different lemon orchards in the area.

They used to live at the rented houses in Buali Kalandar Shah Shrine gate area of the upazila as the owners of the orchard has long been involved in hiring the Rohingyas at a low wages, said local people.
On information, a team of police arrested them from Buali Kalandar Shah Shrine gate area in the night.

The arrestees will be produced before a court after filling of a case, said Mohamamd Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of Boalkhali Police Station.
Earlier on June 26, police arrested 31 Rohingya people from the upazila.
20 Rohingyas who fled Bhasanchar arrested in Chattogram
Twenty Rohingyas who had fled Bhasanchar in Noakhali were arrested in Jorarganj area of Mirsarai upazila in Chattogram on Saturday .
Among the arrestees, 11 were children, five women and four men.
The arrestees are Md Abdur Rahman, 27, Setara Begum, 20, Md Sabbir 26, Sanchita begum, Rajiya Begum, 23, Nurul Karim, 20, Salma Khatun, 50, Jamal Hossain, 24, Nur Kayda, 25, Rumana, 6, Nur Fatema, 3, Md Ayaz,8, Jannat Ara, 4, Kismat Ara Begum, 2, Mariam, 8, Abul Kashem,7, Md Ayat, 4, Setara, 5, Jannat Ara,1, and Osman Gani aged eight months.

Officer-in-Charge of Jorarganj police station Helal Uddin said tipped off, police arrested the Rohingyas and produced them before a court after filing a case.
Investigation is going on to find out who had helped them to flee, said the OC.
Meanwhile, locals said they informed police when a boat carrying a group of Rohingyas reached the coast adjacent to Mirsarai Economic Zone area.

The Rohingyas were travelling towards Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Teknaf, they said.
Strict lockdown imposed in Teknaf and five Rohingya camps
Amid a huge surge in Covid-19 cases in the region, a 10-day complete lockdown has been imposed in Teknaf upazila while week-long similar restrictions have been announced in five Rohingya camps of Ukhiya-Teknaf.
"Cox’s Bazar District Corona Prevention Committee has decided to impose the lockdown from May 21 to 30 in the wake of a rise in the number of infections in the region," Md Parvez Chowdhury, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Teknaf, said on Friday.
Meanwhile, a strict lockdown has been imposed in Ukhiya camps -- 2,3,4 and 15 -- and Teknaf camp number 24 for a week from May 21, said additional refugee relief and repatriation commissioner Md Shamshuddouza.

All activities in these camps have been suspended from Friday, except emergency services like medicine and food supplies, officials said.
According to the health department in Cox’s Bazar, 823 Rohingyas have been infected with the virus to date and 12 have died.
Bangladesh is currently hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas across 34 camps in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Most of them have arrived in this country since August 25, 2017, when the Myanmar military launched a brutal offensive targeting the mainly-Muslim ethnic minority.
Police set up wireless communication using satellite for the first time
Police have established a wireless communication system using VSAT through Bangabandhu satellite for the first time in Bangladesh.
This has opened a new horizon in wireless communication, connecting Bhasan Char Police Station and Rohingya Camp directly with Dhaka and other police units from Wednesday.
VSAT, a very small aperture terminal, is a small-sized two-way ground station that transmits and receives data, voice and video signals over a satellite communication network, excluding broadcast television.
“Thanks to the wireless communication system, remote Bhasan Char Police Station and Rohingya Camp will able to communicate with other parts of the country easily and without any obstruction in case of any natural calamity including cyclone,” said AIG (Media) of Police Headquarters Md Sohel Rana.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal formally opened the newly-built Bhasan Char Police Station in the remote island under Hatiya upazila of Noakhali on January 19 this year to ensure the overall law and order situation.
The government invested more than $350 million to develop the 13,000 acres island and to provide all modern amenities for the Rohingyas.
The government plans to shift some 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char in phases. Currently, several thousand of them are living there.
Japan announces $1 million emergency aid for Rohingya camp fire victims
Japan has decided to extend emergency support of around $1 million for the victims and survivors of the Rohingya camp fire in Cox's Bazar.
The aid comes through the Japan Platform, an international emergency humanitarian aid organisation.

This support will include health and medical care; food, water, sanitation, and shelter assistance, the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka said on Thursday.
With this assistance, Japan has contributed $156 million to humanitarian assistance in Cox's Bazar since August 2017.

On March 22, at least 15 people were killed in a massive fire that swept through Balukahli Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said.
Tens of thousands were left homeless in Cox's Bazar after fleeing the blaze. Aid groups estimate that around 40,500 and 50,000 people have been hit hard by the fire.

S Korea provides US$ 1 mn to IOM to support Rohingyas affected in recent fire
The government of South Korea has decided to provide emergency support of US$ 1 million to the International Organization of Migration (IOM) in order to support the humanitarian activities in response to the massive fire that broke out recently at the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
According to international agencies, the fire that broke out on March 22 heavily damaged Camp 9, Camp 8E, and Camp 8W located in Kutupalong Balukhali area, Cox’s Bazar, with approximately 10,100 households destroyed and about 48,000 Rohingya refugees displaced.

The Korean Government’s support will help international humanitarian agencies’ response and recovery activities benefit the most affected and rebuild the destroyed refugee shelters and living facilities, including LPG distribution, latrines, and bathing systems.
Since the outbreak of the Rohingya refugee crisis in 2017, the Republic of Korea has been providing annually four to five million US dollars for activities of international humanitarian agencies such as UNHCR, UNICEF, IOM, WFP, and IFRC for responding to the large scale international humanitarian crisis and supporting for Bangladesh host community.

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea said they will continue to make its best effort to address the humanitarian crisis and the ultimate repatriation of Rohingya refugees in close cooperation with the Bangladesh Government and the international community.
