Injured monkey goes to Sitakunda Health Complex, receives treatment
A monkey has become the talk of the locality after it went to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex in Chattogram twice and received treatment for wounds.
Surprised locals said that the wild animal was first seen in the area around a month back and since then it is frequently seen here and there.
The monkey with wounds was spotted in front of the upazila health complex over the past couple of days.
Dr Nuruddin Rashed, a physician at the upazila health complex, said, “I found the monkey, with wounds, sitting on the balcony of the hospital when I was about to leave work on Saturday afternoon.”

Later, he dressed the wounds on the monkey, and it left the health complex, said the doctor.
The monkey again appeared at the hospital on Sunday, he said, adding that brandages were put on the monkey’s wounds. Later, it went away.
“The animal seemed to be in pain and some of the wounds in the back started to rot. This could have happened due to electric shock from sitting on power lines,” he said, adding, “I wanted to know the whereabouts of the monkey when I joined the office today. The monkey was seen sitting on a branch of a tree by the hospital.”

PM Hasina assures consideration of Danish Maersk Group's offer to build a container terminal in Ctg
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (August 28, 2023) assured that relevant authorities of Bangladesh will give due consideration to a proposal of Danish shipping and logistic giant Maersk Group for constructing and operating a new container terminal at Laldia of Chattogram.
The prime minister made the assurance when Chief Executive Officer of the Maersk Group Robert Maersk Uggla along with Danish Charges D’Affaires in Bangladesh Andres B Karlsen called on her at her office.
Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the reporters after the call on.

“Over 50 Danish Companies are working in Bangladdsh, and Maersk Group is now interested to construct and operate APM terminal at Laldia,” Hasina said.
The PM said that a national committee has been formed to formulate logistic policy for the development of ports.
In this regard, she mentioned that two ports- Chattogram and Mongla are already in operation while the government is developing another named Paira Port and it will will come in to operation soon.
“India, Nepal and Bhutan have been given opportunities to use these ports for the mutual benefits,” the prime minister said.
There will be many opportunities and advantages in the ports particularly in the Paira port, she added.

Pointing out contribution of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the development and welfare of the nation, Sheikh Hasina said, the great leader struggled throughout his life for the economic emancipation of the people.
During the meeting, the Maersk Group CEO said, there are great potentials in the areas of container shipping and logistic support in Bangladesh.
Maersk Uggla welcomed vision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to establish smart Bangladesh and said it will be reflected in Chattogram sea port, according to the press secretary.
He expressed keenness to invest for the development of port and logistic supports in Bangladesh saying there are many opportunities in this sectors.
In this context, the Maersk Group CEO mentioned that H&M, M&S, Walmart and other big companies are interested to import more RMG products from Bangladesh.

He said that there are many opportunities to diversify cooperation, while the Danish government is very much supportive in the logistic policy.

Man held with gold worth Tk 47.71 lakh at Chattogram airport
National Security Intelligence and Customs Intelligence Authority detained a man along with gold bars, ornaments, weighing 537 grams, worth Tk 47.71 lakh, from Shah Amanat International Airport on Sunday.

The detainee was identified as Mohammad Rezaul Karim, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Dubai and son of Abul Hossain of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar district.
Bashir Ahmed, Additional Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department, said a flight of Dubai Airlines landed at the airport at 8:58 am.

Tipped off, the members of National Security Intelligence and Customs Intelligence Authority challenged Rezaul and seized one gold bar, three finger rings, two gold sticks and one piece gold, weighing 537 grams, kept in the handle of a fry pen and bottle of a body spray tactfully.
They also seized his mobile phone set and laptop.

Later, they arrested him.
A case was filed with Patenga Police Station.
Youth’s body recovered from Karnaphuli River
The body of an unidentified youth was recovered from the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on Saturday night.
The youth aged around 30 was wearing a T-shirt and a jean pant. Locals said they spotted the body stuck near a lighter vessel in the river around 11:30 on Saturday and informed river police.

On information, the body was recovered from the river and sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Sadarghat river police station’s Inspector Md Ekram Ullah in a media release on Sunday morning.

A case was filed in this regard, the police officer added.
Illegal arms factory busted in Chattogram hill: 2 held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have unearthed an illegal arms manufacturing factory and arrested two people along with arms in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram district.
The arrestees were identified as Jahangir Alam and Md Emon.

Tapash Karmakar, senior assistant superintendent of police and director (media) of Rab-7 on Wednesday said a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in Pathorighona hill area of the upazila and unearthed the illegal arms making factory on Tuesday.
Later, they also arrested two people from there along with three locally made guns, one sharp weapon and huge arms making equipment.

Jahangir has long been involved in making arms and supplying those to the criminals including pirates, drug peddlers and members of robber gangs, said Tapash.
They lived in the area in the guise of farmers.

Indian national held with 981 grams gold at Chattogram airport
Customs Intelligence arrested an Indian national along with 981 grams of gold from Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport on Monday.

The arrestee was identified as Tushar Nagin Das.

Ahsan Ullah, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Airport Customs and Intelligence Department, said Tushar landed at the airport from Sharjah by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines in the morning and he was scheduled to go to Dhaka.

Suspecting movement of Tushar, the customs officials challenged him and seized 981 grams of gold after searching his body and luggage.
Chattogram flood: 50 km of roads in Port City, crops of around 50,000 hectares of land in the district damaged
Though flood water is receding, marks of devastation are becoming apparent in the Port City and Chattogram.
Some 50 km of roads across 41 wards of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and crops of over 50,000 hectares of land in the district have been badly damaged by the flood.
Moreover, 2.19 km of drains and 2 km of footpath were damaged in Chattogram city.
The information was provided by CCC and district administration.
UNB’s Chattogram correspondent found the topmost layer on several roads in areas including Bandar, Halishahar, Muradpur to Oxygen, Bayezid Bostami, Khatiberhat, Jakir Hossain, Jamal Khan and Omar Ali Matobbor under the CCC were damaged.

Footpaths of the city’s Kazir Dewri to Love Lane Road and Jubilee Road were submerged and potholes were created, causing immense public suffering.
Munirul Huda, additional chief engineer of the CCC, said Tk 60 crore will be sought from the Local Government Ministry to repair the damaged roads.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chattogram, crops of 165 hectares of land in the city’s Panchlaish, Double Mooring and Patenga areas were damaged. Of them there were Aush paddy and vegetables.
Seedbeds of 32,719 hectares of lands of Aman paddy and 6,567 hectares of crops were damaged in 15 upazilas of the district. Aush paddy was supposed to be harvested at the end of this month.

Gumai Bil which is located in Rangunia upazila and considered a “major grain source” of Chattogram had been under water for a week due to the flood.
Dr Aurbinda Kumar Roy, additional director of Chattogram region at DAE, told UNB that they primarily estimated that crops of over 50,000 hectares of land were damaged by the flood in the city and district.
People of the port city and district experienced an unprecedented flood from August 4 to 7 after a torrential rainfall started on August 1. A total of 664 mm of rainfall was recorded during this time, breaking the previous record of the last 30 years.
The water of Sangu, Matamuhuri, Dalu, Karnaphuli and Halda rivers surged, resulting in a flood in the city and district.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Abul Bashar Mohammed Fakhruzzaman told UNB that the extent of damages caused by the flood was estimated over Tk 135 crore and efforts are on to collect data in this regard.

It is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction further and weaken gradually into a well-marked low, said a special bulletin of the Met office on Thursday (August 03, 2023).

Man ‘stabs older brother to death’ in Chattogram
A 55-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his younger brother at Chandnaish upazila in Chattogram on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Musa, son of Abdul Wares.
Quoting witnesses, Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chandnaish Police Station, said an altercation happened between Musa and his younger brother Abdul Bayez over money at their house in Phultala Sagir Para in the afternoon.
Man jailed for life for killing girl in Shariatpur
At one stage, Abdul Bayez stabbed Musa indiscriminately, leaving him injured.
Musa was taken to Dohazari Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Police recovered the body.
Police are also trying to arrest Bayez, said the OC.

BMD predicts rain in Dhaka, other divisions
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted rain or thundershowers in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, over 24 hours — starting from 9 am today (June 26, 2023).
"Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over southern part of the country," the Met Office said.
The highest, 67 mm, rainfall was recorded in Barishal district in the country in 24 hours till 6 am on Monday.

The country may witness more rain over the next 72 hours, BMD also said.
