Two women jailed for possessing drugs in B’baria
Brahmanbaria, Sept 12 (UNB) – A mobile court here on Tuesday convicted two women and sentenced them to different terms of imprisonment for possessing drugs in Akhaura upazila.
Akhaura upazila executive magistrate Mohammad Shamsuzzaman in association with Border Guard Bangladesh conducted a drive in Azampur Rail Station area and arrested Fatem Begum, 30, wife of Sohel Mia and Sarbanu, 45, wife of Sajon Mia of Kasba upazila along with four kilograms of hemp in the early hours of Tuesday.
Later, the mobile court sentenced Fatema to six months jail and fined Tk 5,000, in default to suffer 15 days more in jail.
The court also sentenced Sarbanu to one-year imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000, in default to suffer two months more jail.
23 villages submerged in Teesta basin
Lalmonirhat, Sept 11 (UNB) – More than 10,000 people of 23 villages in the char areas of Teesta and Dharala rivers have been trapped in flood water following onrush of water from upstream hilly areas.
The trans-boundary Teesta river was flowing 8 cm above the danger level at Doyani point on Tuesday morning.
Two bodies recovered in Satkhira
Satkhira, Sept 11 (UNB) – Police recovered the bodies of a woman and a man from Nagarghata and Jhorghachha villages of Tala upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Mamtaz Begum, 55, and Gopal Gosh.
Quoting locals, assistant superintendent of police Apu Sarwar of Tala circle police, said Mamtaz’s daughter Tumpa Khatun had a brawl with her mother in the noon.
At one stage, Tumpa hit her mother’s head with an iron stick, leaving her critically injured.
The injured was taken to Satkhira Sadar Hospital from where she was referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
She succumbed to his injuries around 7 pm at KMCH.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body of Ghopal from a water body near his house in the evening.
The body bore several injury marks on it, said the police official.
‘Drug trader’ killed in Rajshahi ‘gunfight’
Rajshahi, Sept 11 (UNB) – A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Pakuria-Dhuroil Beel in Mohanpur upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Dulal Miah, 45, son of late Ibrahim, a resident of Harihar village.
AFM Ashraful Islam, deputy commanding officer of Rab-5, said a gang of drug traders numbering around ten tried to flee when a Rab team was patrolling in the area around 1 am.
Being chased by the elite force members, the gang opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back that triggered the gunfight.
Later, the team found Dulal with bullet wounds and took him to Mohonpur Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctors declared him dead.
The team recovered 506 Yaba tablets, a foreign pistol, one round bullet and a magazine from the spot.

Good price of jute delights Naogaon growers
Naogaon, Sept 10 (UNB) – Farmers of the district are very happy this year due to the good price of jute after so many years.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), jute is now selling at Tk 1,800-2,000 per maund while its highest price was Tk 1,500 per maund last year.
However, the land brought under jute cultivation this year is lesser than that of the past year as many growers did not take interest in cultivating it due to its low prices in previous years.
DAE sources said farmers cultivated jute on 7,200 hectares of land this time which was 8,300 hectares in the previous year.
Some local farmers said they will cultivate jute on more lands next year as they are getting good prices this year.
Sekandar Ali, a farmer of Enayetpur village in Manda upazila, said he cultivated jute on 40 decimals of land and the total cost of the production was Tk 8,000. He got Tk 22,000 selling his jute.
