Voting underway in Gazipur City Corporation election
Voting in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election began on Thursday (May 25, 2023) using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in all polling stations in a peaceful manner.
The voting began around 8 am and will continue till 4 pm without any break.
Eight candidates are contesting for mayoral posts in the election and there are 248 councillors and 79 female councilor candidates.
A total of 11,79,476 voters are eligible to vote and of them, 5,92,762 are men and 5,86,696 are women, and the number of transgender people is 18.
Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana said that Gazipur City Corporation voting will be held in a free and fair environment and voters can cast their vote peacefully.

The commissioner said this while exchanging views with journalists after a meeting with magistrates on maintaining law and order in the Gazipur City Corporation election at Gazipur Circuit House on Wednesday.
The election commission will monitor the election through CCTVs, which were set up in all polling stations.
Tight security
A total of 13,000 law enforcers have been deployed to maintain law and order during the election, said Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Molla Nazrul Islam on Wednesday.
“ 20-22 members of law enforcement agencies will perform duty at each centre. I hope a free and fair election will be held with the efforts of all amid foolproof security,” he told UNB.
Twenty platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed alongside 30 teams of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Ansar members, said Returning Officer Faridul Islam.

HC dismisses writ challenging cancellation of ex-Gazipur mayor Jahangir’s nomination
The High Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition challenging the legality of cancellation of Gazipur City Corporation’s (GCC) former mayor Jahangir Alam’s nomination paper for the mayoral post in the upcoming GCC election.
The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Mohammad Mahbub-Ul-Alam rejected the petition saying that he was a loan defaulter till the submission day of the nomination paper which made him ineligible.
Former Additional Attorney General MK Rahman appeared for the petitioner while Attorney General A M Amin Uddin for the state.

The writ petition was submitted to the HC bench concerned a week after Gazipur’s Returning Officer (RO) Faridul Islam cancelled his nomination paper in a primary scrutinization, as he is a “loan defaulter”.
On May 4, Jahangir appealed to Dhaka divisional commissioner against the cancellation; the appeal was rejected on the same day.
After being rejected, Jahangir moved the HC, challenging the cancellation.

On April 30, during primary scrutinization, Jahangir’s nomination was cancelled while his mother Zaida Khatun’s nomination was declared valid.
Jahangir was the guarantor of an industrial organization. He was declared a loan defaulter along with the organization, the returning officer said.
Though the former mayor and his counsel submitted documents demonstrating paying off the loan along with the nomination paper, the returning officer cancelled his nomination during the scrutinization.
Eid journey: Heavy pressure of vehicles in Gazipur; commuters say being charged extra fare
The situation on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur is better than the last few years.However, since this morning, there are crowds of home-goers at various important points including Chandana intersection on the highway and the pressure of vehicles is also very high.To keep the movement of vehicles smooth on the highway, the road is being monitored round the clock with the deployment of additional traffic police at important points including Chandana, Bhogra Bypass intersection, Board Bazar, and Station Road.There are certain routes with fewer vehicles and more commuters. Many said they have to wait for a long time for buses, and taking advantage of this, transport workers are charging extra fare.Buses on the Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Sherpur, Netrakona and other routes are charging about one and a half times more than usual fare, they complained.Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (traffic) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain said, about 1,000 traffic police personnel, APBN members and rover scouts have been deployed in three shifts to maintain normal traffic conditions on the highway during this year's Eid journey.Special monitoring is going on to prevent unfit vehicles from plying the road. Some tow-trucks have also been kept ready at different points of the highway.
Walton explains 3 workers' deaths, says they drank juice outside company’s dining service
Three factory workers who died yesterday shortly after having iftar, were among five who drank juice outside the dining service of the company, according to Walton Hi-Tech Industries.
Signed by the company’s Deputy Managing Director, Md Humayun Kabir, a press release reads that all Walton employees are particularly instructed not to eat any food other than that provided by the company.
Another worker also fell sick and is undergoing treatment, it added.

Three Walton Hi-Tech factory workers died after having iftar at Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district on Sunday evening.
The deceased are Sheikh Farid Hossain, 30; Abdul Barek, 48; and Ashraf Ali, 30.
Angry workers of the factory blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway by burning tyres after hearing of the incident.
Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tajwar Akram Sakapi said that three workers of the factory became ill after having iftar and were taken to the nearby hospital quickly, where the doctors declared the three dead.
The doctors, however, could not identify the exact cause of their death.

Three factory workers died after taking iftar at Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur district on Sunday evening.
The details of the deceased couldn’t be identified immediately.
Angry workers of the factory blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway by burning tires hearing the incident.
Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tajwar Akram Sakapi said that on three workers of a factory located in Chandra area of Kaliakair Upazila got ill after taking iftar and were taken to the near hospital quickly where the doctors declared the three dead.
But the doctors could not identify the exact cause of their death.
Actress Mahiya Mahi arrested from Dhaka Airport after landing from Saudi Arabia
Police today (March 18, 2023) arrested popular film actress Mahiya Mahi, from Dhaka Airport, in connection with a case filed under Digital Security Act.
Mohammad Ibrahim, deputy commissioner of DB of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said a team of Gazipur police arrested Mahi from Dhaka Airport.
Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent (media) of Airport Armed Police, said Mahi arrived at the airport from Jeddah. “A team of Gazipur police arrested her around 12 pm.”
Earlier, Rokon Mia, sub-inspector of Bason Police Station, filed a case under Digital Security Act against Mahiya Mahi and her husband Rakib Sarkar on Friday (March 17, 2023) night on charge of “defaming police” after going live on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Ismail Hossain, a businessman, filed the other case with Bason Police Station against 28 people including the couple on charges of assaulting, vandalism and forcibly occupying land.
Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsuddin, deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said police filed the case against the couple for “tarnishing the image of police, including Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam”, after going live on Facebook.
According to the case statement, Mahiya Mahi, from her Facebook page, went live early Friday — making allegations against police.
During the live session, she said Ismail Hossain and Mamun Sarkar, through their people, carried out an attack on a showroom, Sony Raj Car Palace, on Dhaka-Tangail highway near Bhawal Badre Alam Government College.

The actress and her husband also alleged that the Gazipur Metropolitan Police commissioner “supported the attackers” after taking bribe.
She also said she feared getting arrested after returning to the country from Makkah. During the Facebook live, Mahiya’s husband Rakib alleged that police arrested security guards of the car showroom.
Meanwhile, Ismail Hossain, owner of Rod Binding Factory in Itahata area of Gazipur city, in his complaint said, he has been running a factory in the area for the past ten years after purchasing land there.
On Friday, some people on behalf of Rakib and Mahiya attacked and vandalized the factory, he said. They also beat up five people at the factory, leaving them injured, while trying to occupy the land, according to the complaint.

2 cases filed against actress Mahiya Mahi, husband in Gazipur
Two cases have been filed against popular film actress Mahiya Mahi and her husband — on charge of “defaming police” after going live on Facebook and alleged involvement in extortion and assaulting a businessman.
Rokon Mia, sub-inspector of Bason Police Station, filed a case under Digital Security Act against Mahi and her husband Rakib Sarkar while Ismail Hossain, a businessman, filed the other case on Friday night with Bason Police Station against 28 people including the couple on charges of assaulting, vandalism and forcibly occupying land.

Youth stabbed dead by robbers in Gazipur
A youth was stabbed to death allegedly by robbers in a house at Salna Mollah Para in Gazipur city Sunday night.
The deceased, Mahius Sunan Chowdhury, passed the HSC exams last year.
Mehazabien Chowdhury, the deceased’s mother, said around 3:00 am a group of five-six robbers entered the house by cutting the window grill.

“The robbers tied up her hands and feet and entered Suhan’s room. They tied him up also and looted five tolas of gold and cash after stabbing him with a sharp weapon,” she said.
After the robbers left, Mehazabien went to Suhan’s room and found him dead.
Ziaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gazipur Sadar Police Station, said police were sent after receiving information about the incident.
It is being investigated whether the incident was a robbery or enmity or any other matter and legal action will be taken after receiving a complaint, he said.
2 workers killed, 5 hurt as under-construction building's roof collapses in Gazipur
Two construction workers were killed, and five others injured as the roof of an under-construction apparel factory collapsed in Sreepur Wednesday, the fire service said.
The deceased were identified as Ariful Islam, 28, from Gazipur's Kaliganj upazila, and Sree Mukul Chandra from Dinajpur's Chirirbandar upazila.
Another worker, Md Mamun Mia (28), from Kurigram's Kachakata was critically injured. He is now receiving treatment at the hospital.
The identities of the other two workers could not immediately be confirmed.
The incident took place at Hams apparel factory in Sreepur municipality's Bhangnahati area. A few workers were trapped under the debris.
Iftekhar Hossain Raihan Chowdhury, station officer of the Sreepur fire service, said two bodies have been recovered so far. "The rescue operation is still on."
