Nalka bridge in Sirajganj to be opened to traffic partially to ease traffic jam during Eid
One lane of Nalka bridge over the Fuljor River in Salanga upazila will be opened to traffic before Eid-ul-Fitr to mitigate the sufferings of home-bound people caused by traffic jam during Eid journey.
The construction work of Nalka Bridge on the western side of Bangabandhu Bridge is going on in the full swing and it is expected to be completed before Eid, said Project Manager of the Bridge Ekhlas Uddin.
Besides, a total of 450 policemen will work on highways linked to Bangabandhu Bridge to ensure smooth journey of holidaymakers, said police.
Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said the policemen will work to ensure security of the commuters and ease movement of traffic.

Every year, home-bound people suffer a lot due to 36-kilometer long tailback on Dhaka-Sirajganj highway from Hatikumrul Gol Chattar via Chandaikona.
To ease the suffering of commuters, the government has taken a project to upgrade the Bangabandhu West Side to Dhaka-Rangpur-Burimari highway into a four-lane one.
As the construction work has not been completed yet, Eid holidaymakers might experience severe traffic jam this year like the previous years.
Missing schoolboy’s body recovered from river in Sirajganj
Members of the Fire Service and Civil Defense have recovered the body of a schoolboy two days after he had gone in the Fuljor River in Sirajganj.
The deceased was identified as Shuvo, 14, a class X student of a local high school and son of Sukumar Chandra of Chandaikona union of Raiganj upazila.

Ataur Rahman, station officer of Sirajganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, said Shuvo and some of his friends went to the river for bathing after Holi festival on Friday afternoon and at one stage Shuvo drowned.
Fire service members and divers from Rajshahi could not trace the body even after searching for two days but the locals spotted his body on Sunday morning, he said.

Raiganj Police officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Shahidul Islam police recovered the body and handed it over to his family.
Juba Dal leader killed in Sirajganj
A union unit leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal was shot dead allegedly by some assailants in Sadar upazila of Sirajganj on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Ali Akbar, 40, son of late Mojibur Rahman of Hatsartia village of the upazila.

Md Siddique Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Belkuchi circle, said the assailants shot Akbar Ali at Randhunibari Bazaar under Soydabad union around 8.15pm.
"He died on the way to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital," the ASP said, adding that four bottles of liquor and a bag were found near the crime scene.
The motive behind the killing will be clear only after an investigation, the ASP added.
Age no bar: 43-year-old passes SSC exam in Sirajganj
Defying age Rabiul Awal of Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj district has passed this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination with a good grade at the age of 43. Rabiul, the youngest son of Sohrab Hossain of Nandinamadhu village of the upazila, appeared in the SSC examination of 2021 (Vocational) and obtained GPA 4.68. A three-time elected member of Ward No 9 of Jamtoil Union Parishad of the upazila, Rabiul was a little bit frustrated as he failed to win the post in the recently held UP election.

In 1992, Rabiul appeared in the SSC exam under Rajshahi General Education Board. In all subjects except Mathematics he got letter marks. He failed in Mathematics securing only 28 marks, he said.. Being frustrated over the failure, he stopped studies. After remaining detached from formal education for 29 years, Rabiul started to think over resuming study two years back and got admitted to Shahidul Bulbul Technical School and College in class IX under Technical Education Board . This time he succeeded. Encouraged by the success he now wish to continue his study.

4 killed, 19 injured in Sirajganj bus crash
Four people were killed and 19 others injured as a bus overturned on a three-wheeler at Salanga on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway of Sirajganj district.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatikumrul Highway Police Lutfar Rahman said the bus on its way to Dhaka from Rajshahi lost control near Goja Bridge on the highway around 10 am and hit the battery-run van.

He said four van passengers, including a woman, were killed on the spot and 19 others injured, three critically.
The deceased could not be identified yet, the OC said.

UP-polls violence: 1 succumbs to injuries in Sirajganj, 1 arrested
A man succumbed on Monday to injuries he sustained during a clash between supporters of two rival member candidates in the Khash Kaulia Union Parishad election in Chowhali upazila under Sirajganj district.
The deceased was identified as Zakir Hossain Molla,50, brother of Khash Kaulia Union Parishad Ward-8 member candidate Jahangir Molla.
He died around 2 pm at a private hospital in Dhaka a day after he was seriously injured, said Md Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Chouhali police station.

During the election on Sunday some 10 people were injured including Zakir when supporters of Jahangir Molla and Abdul Hakim locked in a clash at Kukri centre, said the OC.
Zakir was transferred to Dhaka in a critical condition, he said.

Rival candidate Abdul Hakim was arrested from his house around 3pm on Monday over the death and the process of filing a case is underway, said the OC.

A 43-year-old man and two of his family members were detained by RAB members on Tuesday in a case filed on charge of shaving his wife’s hair and eyebrows in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj.
The detainees are victim Gulnahar Parvin Minu’s husband Mehedi Hasan Sujon, 43, his brother Md Sumon,35, and mother Maina,55, residents of Satbaria village in the upazila.

They were detained around 6 am from Shahzadpur in Sirajganj and Savar during a joint drive of Rab-4 and Rab-12, said Major Md Mushfiqur Rahman, deputy commander of Rapid Action Battalion-12 (RAB).
Married in 2006, Minu and Mehedi live in Gazipur as Mehedi works in a garment factory.
Minu alleged her husband always tortured her both physically and mentally.
Woman attempts suicide after killing son in Sirajganj
A mentally retarded woman tried to end her life after allegedly killing her five-year-old son in Chandidasgati village of Sadar upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Limon, son of Imrul Kayesh and Lipi Khatun.
Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said that Lipi suffocated her son to death when other family members were busy with household chores.

Later, he tried to kill herself by slitting her wrist with a blade. However, she was rescued by the family members and rushed to a local hospital.
"We have taken the body into our custody. A probe is also on," the OC said.

3 farm workers killed in Sirajganj road crash
Three farm workers were killed and another was injured when a truck crushed a motorbike they were riding on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway at Tarash upazila of Sirajganj, local police confirmed on Friday.
Witnesses said the accident occurred around 7pm Thursday when a gas cylinder-laden truck crushed the motorcycle with four riders at Mohishluti on their way to Hatikumrul.

The three _ Swapan Kumar, 25, Ashish Kumar, 28, and Palak, 30 _ all from Bridhamarich village of Bhangura upazila of Pabna district died on the spot. The injured has been admitted to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Sirajganj.
Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, confirmed the accident and said the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families.

A case has been filed in this regard, the OC added.
3 candidates submit nomination papers for Sirajganj-6 by-election
Three candidates – one each from Awami League and Jatiya Party and an independent - on Sunday submitted the nomination papers to contest Sirajganj-6 parliamentary by-elections slated for November 02 next.
The candidates are AL’s Marina Jahan, Jatiya Party’s Moktar Hossain and independent Humayun Kabir, according to the information provided by the Election Commission Secretariat on Sunday, the last valid day of the nomination submission.
The date for scrutiny of nomination papers is Monday and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 17.
The parliamentary constituency (Shahjadpur Upazila) fell vacant after the death of AL MP Hasibur Rahman Swapan on September 02 last.

Besides, a total of 41 mayoral aspirants filed their nomination papers in 10 municipalities to contest the seventh phase municipal election, scheduled to be held on the same date (November 02).
But the mayoral election to two municipalities –Kasba in Brahmanbaria and Ramgarh in Khagrachhari-- is set to go unopposed as only AL nominated candidates filed their papers there. The two AL mayoral contenders are Golam Rabbani in Kasba and Rafiqul Alam (Kamal) in Ramgarh.
In municipalities, the election to only mayoral post, not councillor posts or reserved seats is held in the partisan manner with the use of polls symbols of registered political parties.
The deadline for nomination submission expired on Saturday. The date for scrutiny of nomination papers is Monday and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 17.

Alongside independent candidates, the contestants nominated by Jatiya Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Bangladesh Workers’ Party submitted nomination papers in several places among the eight other municipalities.
The eight other municipalities are Ghorashal in Narsingdi, Chhagalnaiya in Feni, Sonatala in Bogura, Ghoraghat in Dinajpur, Domar in Nilphamari, Lohagara in Narail, Pakundia in Kishoreganj and Chapainawabganj.
Moreover, a total of 570 aspirants --123 women for reserved seats and 447 contestants for councillor posts -- filed nomination papers to run the election in the 10 municipalities, as per information provided by the EC Secretariat.
