Nearly 27,000 litres of edible oil seized in Rajshahi, one held
Police have seized nearly 27,000 litres of edible oil illegally stored in two warehouses in Rajshahi and arrested one of its owners.
On a tip-off, a team of cops raided the two warehouses in the Taherpur Bazar area of Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila on Monday night and made the seizure.

"The seized oil includes 19,176 litres of soybean oil. The remaining was mustard oil," said IK Alam, additional superintendent of Rajshahi district police.
"The arrestee took the state-owned godown on rent. He has been identified as Shahidul Islam Swapan, 40, a resident of Cheokhali village," the officer said.

"Later we seized another 31 drums of soybean oil from a nearby godown owned by Swapan’s brother Rafiqul," he said. "His brother, however, managed to escape."
Legal action will be taken against the arrestee and the two godowns have been sealed, said ASP Alam.
Uploading images on FB showing arms: BCL leader held in Rajshahi
–A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, who’s images holding firearms went viral on social networking site Facebook, was held from Rajshahi on Monday, said Rab.
The arrestee is Abu Bakar Siddique alias Ratul, son of Mostafa Kamal of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district. He is the vice-president of Manikhat union unit of BCL.
Tipped off, a team of Rab detained Ratul from Boalia area in Rajshahi city in the morning, said Commanding officer of Rab-5, Lieutenant Colonel Reaz Shahrier at a press briefing at Rab-5 headquarters here.

The images of Ratul holding firearms in his hand that went viral on Facebook drew a huge flack and since then he remained absconding.
According to his statement, Rab members also seized one pistol, one magazine and three bullets from Sagarpara area of the city.
Ratul confessed that uploaded the photos on FB to inform people that he keeps arms with him and establish himself as a criminal.

Missing college student found dead in Rajshahi
Police on Friday recovered the body of a college student from Belpukur area in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi, two days after he had gone missing.
The deceased was identified as Hasibur Rahman Sagar, 19, of the upazila. He was a Class-XI of Belpukur Ideal Degree College.

Sagar’s relatives spotted his body in Belpukur rail crossing area in the morning and alerted police.
Sagor’s father Sahad Ali said he went to visit Green Valley Park in Natore's Lalpur upazila with his friends and had been missing since then.
He also lodged a general diary with Belpukur Police Station.
Police suspected that Sagar was killed two days ago after being hit on his head.

Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Belpukur police station, said they informed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to collect the evidence from the spot.
GRP police were also informed for taking legal steps as the spot is under this station, said the OC.
Rajshahi city Jamaat secretay held over vandalism
Police arrested secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Rajshahi metropolitan unit on Friday in a case filed over vandalism.
The arrestee is Imaz Uddin Mandal, absconding accused of a vandalism case filed with Poba police station, said Rajshahi Metropolitan police in a press briefing on Saturday.
He was arrested around 5 pm on Friday from in front of a mosque in Terokhadia area during a drive conducted by a team of Detective Branch of police.
The arrestee and his associates were holding secret meetings to plan anti-state propaganda and vandalism acts, said police.

Legal actions will be taken against the accused, they said.
A total of 35 case have been filed against the accused for terrorist activities, vandalism and conspiring against the government, said police at the briefing.
Village doctor's throat-slit body found in Rajshahi
Police recovered the throat-slit body of a village doctor from Kanojgari village Charghat upazila of Rajshahi on Friday night.The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan, 60, a village doctor of Kanojgari village.Around 9 pm, Mannan went to the banana orchard next to the house but did not return for a long time.As he did not not return for a long time, the victim's family members went to the orchard and found him dead and informed police.Some injury marks were found on his body.On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, said Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Charghat Model Police Station.The body has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.
Schoolgirl gang raped in Rajshahi; 2 held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested two people in connection with the rape of a class X student by some youths after abducting her in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi.
The arrestees are as Rakib, 25, and Mizan, of the upazila.

Tipped off, a team of RAB-5 Rajshahi and RAB-11 arrested them conducting a drive at Khanpur in Sadar upazila of Narayanganj on Monday night, said Rab in a media briefing in Rajshahi.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to their involvement with the incident.
Efforts are on to arrest the other criminals.
On April 13, the schoolgirl, who was returning home from a relative's house in a battery-run rickshaw van along with two others, was allegedly abducted and raped by five to six youths in Puthia upazila.

The miscreants snatched money and mobile phone sets of the rickshaw van passengers and then forcibly took the girl to a banana orchard, where they took turns to rape her, according to the survivor.
The girl later managed to reach Begar Mor area and narrated her ordeal to locals, said Officer-in-charge of Puthia police station, Shahrowardy Hossain.
Mild heat wave sweeps over parts of Bangladesh
A mild heat wave is sweeping over the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna and Jashore and it may continue, said a Met Office bulletin.
“Rain or thunder showers with intense lightning flashes is likely to occur at a few places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur division and the districts of Kishoregonj and Brahmanbaria,” it said.

NGO worker crushed under train in Rajshahi
A 45-year-old man was crushed under the wheels of a train at a level crossing in Rajshahi city on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Farooq Hossain, an official of a non-governmental organization of the city.

Rakibur Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajshahi Railway Police Station, said the train hit the man while he was crossing the level crossing on a motorcycle at Dingadoba Eidgah area in the evening, leaving him dead on spot.
There was no gateman at the level crossing, he added.

The body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for an autopsy.
A case will be filed in this regard, he added.
4 to die for murder in Rajshahi
A Rajshahi court on Sunday sentenced four people to death for killing a man in 2021.
Judge Anup Kumar of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the judgment.

The convicts are Badal Mandal, 46, of Shampur Paschimpara village in Niamatpur upazila of Naogaon, Bimal Singh, 50, of Enayetpur Chorkhair village in Tanore upazila, his wife Anjali Rani, 45, and son Subodh Singh, 28.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each
According to the case statement, Prakash Singh, 20, son of Nirmal Singh of Enayetpur Chorkhair village and a cleaning staff at a sweetmeat shop in Rajshahi, was found dead near Banshidharpur bridge in Tanore upazila with wound marks.
Father of Nirmal filed a case at Tanore police station in this regard.

One killed, two injured in Rajshahi clash
A 35-year-old man was killed and two others were injured in a clash between two rival groups in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi over the formation of a mosque committee on Friday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Khokan Ali, son of Mozahar Ali of Zutkartik village in the upazila. The two injured, Mozahar Ali and Sirajul Islam, have been given primary treatment at the upazila health complex.
Police on Saturday claimed to have detained 17 people in connection with the clash.
Cops and eye-witnesses said that the two groups, one led by Kamruzzaman alias Mukul, and another by Muktar Ali, had a longstanding dispute over the formation of a committee of the village mosque and replacing its president.

During the mugrib prayer, an altercation broke out over the matter between the two groups that resulted in the clash, leaving Khokan Ali (nephew of Muktar Ali) critically wounded. He was rushed to Charghat upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
“Being informed, police rushed to the spot and detained 17 people,” said Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Charghat Model Police Station.
The body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.
