Fire inside a parked train's private compartment kills nine in southern India
A fire erupted inside a stationary train compartment at a railway station in southern India killing nine people on Saturday morning, officials said.
The blaze broke out early at 5 a.m. and burned for two hours before firefighters were able to put it out, authorities said.

It started inside a train's private compartment which was detached and parked on the railway tracks in the Madurai station, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, according to a statement by the Southern Railway.
A gas cylinder smuggled in by some passengers caused the fire, the statement read, adding that police, fire and rescue officials helped pull out the bodies from the coach. There was no damage to other coaches.

Southern Railway did not divulge the number of people inside the compartment at the time of the fire but said many managed to get out.
Officials told the Press Trust of India news agency that 20 others were injured and taken to hospital.

Accidents are common on India's railroad network, one of the world's largest, with some 22 million passengers daily. Most collisions and fires are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
In June, a deadly train collision killed over 290 people in one of India's worst train accidents.
2 children drown in a pond while trying to pluck guavas in Gaibandha
Two children died after falling into a pond while trying to pluck guava at Satarpara village in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Rumpa, 7, daughter of Sultan Mia, and Rafia, 4, daughter of Raihan Mia, of the village.
Mostafizur Rahman, chairman of Betkapa Union Parishad, said the two children climbed a guava tree to pluck fruits in the afternoon.

A branch broke and the children fell into the pond right next to the tree.
Later, locals recovered the bodies of the two children in the evening.

A traffic police constable was killed when a sand-laden truck hit his motorbike at Golchattar in Gaibandha district town on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Biplab of Sirajganj district.

The accident occurred around 7:30 am when the truck from Palashbari hit the motorbike carrying Biplab while performing his duty near police café point, leaving him dead on the spot, said Masud Rana, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Dengue death toll exceeds 500 with 13 more deaths in 24 hours
Thirteen more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Wednesday morning, raising the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 506 this year.
During the period, 2, 070 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the new patients, 857 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it, according to DGHS.
A total of 7, 825 dengue patients, including 3, 580 the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
So far, the DGHS has recorded 1, 06, 429 dengue cases, 98, 098 recoveries.

The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 – the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Also, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year.
17 killed, many injured as under-construction railway bridge collapses in India's Mizoram
NEW DELHI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua/UNB) -- At least 17 workers were killed and many others injured Wednesday after an under-construction overhead railway bridge collapsed in India's northeastern state of Mizoram, officials said.
The bridge collapsed in Sairang town, about 21 km northwest of Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram.

"Under-construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today. At least 17 workers died," Zoramthanga, Chief Minister of Mizoram, said in a brief statement.
According to Zoramthanga, the rescue operation on the spot was underway.
He has expressed grief over the deaths and extended sympathy to the families of the victims.
"Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured."

Officials said immediately after the bridge collapse that locals reached the spot to help pull out victims from the debris.
The authorities have also rushed rescuers from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, local administration and railway officials to the site.
"Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations," he said.
Reports said there were 40 workers at the construction site at the time of the bridge collapse.
The officials fear some of the workers might be under the debris.

The cause of the bridge collapse was not immediately known.
Federal railways ministry has ordered a probe into the incident and announced compensation for the victims.
"Grieved by the unfortunate incident in Mizoram. NDRF, state administration and railway officials are at the site. Rescue operations going on at war footing," federal railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
He also announced an ex-gratia compensation of 12,065 U.S. dollars to each family that lost a member in the incident, 2,413 U.S. dollars to each seriously injured and 603 U.S. dollars to each person with minor injuries.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his anguish over the incident and announced a separate compensation of 2,413 U.S. dollars to each family that lost a member in the incident and 603 U.S. dollars to each injured from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
18-year-old shot dead in Kutupalong Rohingya camp
A Rohingya youth was shot to death, allegedly by members of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), at Kutupalong camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Yunus, son of Hamid Hossain of the camp.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station, said members of ARSA went into the camp around 7:30 pm on Tuesday and opened fire on Yunus, suspecting him to be involved in the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), leaving him injured.

Farmer electrocuted in Magura
A farmer died from electrocution while cutting branches of a tree in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan,55, son of Kosar Uddin.

When Mannan went to cut the branches of a tree near his house he came in contact with an electric wire and sustained severe injuries at Kalisankarpur village around 1pm, said Borhanul Islam, Offiver-in-Charge of Mohammadpur police station.

55-year-old convicted prisoner dies at DMCH
A 55-year-old prisoner, convicted in a drug case, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Shamsul Haque of Damuddya in Shariatpur upazila.
Shamsul was sentenced to life imprisonment in a drug case. He was serving his sentence in Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s police outpost, said Shamsul fell ill at Dhaka Central Jail and prison guard Mahbubur and others took him to DMCH on Tuesday night.

Woman killed by ‘drug addict’ son in Mymensingh, locals say
A 55-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her "drug addict" son over refusal to give him money at Kharuali village in Bhaluka upazila under Mymensingh district on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Rupina Begum, wife of Shahabuddin Sahu of the village.
Quoting locals, Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, said Jony Mia, 22, "a drug addict," used to harass his mother Rupina for money.

M A Kuddus, cartoonist and senior vice president of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) died of stroke at his Shaheenbagh residence in Dhaka on Saturday. He was 50.
He breathed his last around 8:30 am, said his family members.
