Five suspected terrorists held in N'ganj
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Thursday claimed to have arrested five terrorists from Rupganj and Sonargaon upazilas in Narayanganj.
The arrestees have been identified as Riazul Islam alias Shooter Riaz, 22, Md Zahidul Islam alias Kala Bhagina, 23, Maruf Hossain Munna, 23, Md Selim, 23, and Md Mahbub Miah, 23.

Tipped off, a Rab-3 team conducted drives in Rupganj and Sonargaon upazilas on Wednesday night and arrested the five, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the legal and media wing of Rab.
Three foreign-made pistols, three magazines, 12 rounds of ammunition, five sharp domestic weapons, a motorcycle and 600 pieces of Yaba were seized from their possession, he said.
4 to die for killing schoolboy in N’ganj
A Narayanganj court on Sunday sentenced four people to death and two others to life imprisonment for killing a schoolboy in 2013.
Narayanganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 Begum Sabina Yeasmin handed down the judgment.

The condemned convicts are Siraj, 45, son of Abdus Samad, Ahmed Ali, 55, Nahid, 21, son of Amanullah and Sentu Mia, 25.
The lifers are Salma, 42, son of Sirajul Islam Siraj and Husna, 47, wife of Ahmed.
The court also acquitted four accused from the murder charges as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Ahmed Ali and his nephew Iqbal, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Singapore and son of Ismail Hossain of Char Radhanagar village in Fatulla area, had longstanding enmity with Iqbal.

As a sequel to the enmity, Ahmed took Iqbal’s brother Emon Hossain, 13, a class VI student, where he killed the boy and dumped the body after cutting the body into nine pieces on June 13, 2013.
Later, police recovered the body of Emon and a complaint was lodged with Sadar Police Station.
After investigation, police submitted a chargesheet against ten people.
Woman, pregnant daughter murder in Narayanganj: 1 remanded
A Narayanganj court on Wednesday granted a three-day remand to the accused held over the murder of a woman and her pregnant daughter in Narayanganj’s Nitaiganj.
Earlier on the same day, Ramprasad Chakraborty filed a murder case at Sadar Police Station against Al Jobayer, 26, resident of Paikpara, for murdering his wife Ruma Chakraborty and their daughter.
Narayanganj Police Inspector Asaduzzaman said that Jobayer was produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon with a 10-day remand prayer, but the court granted a three-day remand.

The inspector said the accused youth confessed that he killed the two women to rob money and gold from their house at Dalpatti in Nitaiganj on Tuesday afternoon.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Amir Khasru said, "We have interrogated Jobayer extensively. He said that he needed money to run his own business and that’s why he targeted the biggest house in Nitaiganj.”
Two gold necklaces and earrings were recovered from the accused Jobayer's bag which he took away from the house.

Jobayer claimed that he passed HSC in 2013 and got admission in Computer Science and Engineering department at a private university in Dhaka, but due to financial crisis he couldn’t complete his studies, police sources said.
2 sisters killed as van strikes motorcycle in Narayanganj
Two cousin sisters riding pillion on a motorcycle were killed after the bike was hit by a covered van at Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj, police said on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Brishty Bardhan,4, and her four-year-old cousin Icche Bardhan.

Brishty’s father Suman Bardhan, a jeweller from Monohardi village in the upazila and grandfather Kartik Bardhan suffered injuries in the accident on Thursday.
They are being treated at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.
The accident occurred at 8:30 am in front of Badrunnesa College near Lengurdi area.
According to locals, Sumon was driving the motorcycle and his father, daughter and niece were pillion riding as they headed toward Loknath Brahmachari Ashram and Temple at Sonargaon.
Near Lengurdi area a speeding covered van from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle leaving four of them severely injured.

Locals rushed them to Araihazar upazila health complex where the doctors announced Brishty dead on arrival and Icche died on the way to Dhaka hospital, said Anisur Rahman Molla, Officer-in-Charge of Araihazar police station.
The OC said the van was seized but its driver managed to flee.
Legal actions are underway in this regard, said the OC.
Narayanganj fire: 2 burn victims die at DMCH
Two people, who sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion of a vehicle in Fatulla of Narayanganj district, died at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Alam Hossain, 40, and Judge Mia, 50.

Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police camp, said Alam received 100% burn injuries and died at the hospital around 12:30 am while Judge Mia with 80% burn injuries died around 8:30 am.
Earlier on Sunday, ten people, including a child, suffered burn injuries when a gas cylinder of a vehicle exploded at Aliganj in Fatulla of Narayanganj.
The incident occurred around 9 am when a gas cylinder of a vehicle exploded following a cigarette fire as some workers were repairing the vehicle behind a tin-shed house of Abdul Baten in Beparipara area of Fatullah's Aliganj, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, quoting locals.

At least 10 people, including a child, suffered injuries as a gas cylinder of a vehicle exploded at Aliganj in Fotulla of Narayanganj on Sunday morning.

The type of the vehicle was not immediately known. Seven occupants of the house were burnt in the blast.
Among the injured, six were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
They are Hafsa, 6, Alam, 40, Judge Mia, 50, Sathi Aktar, 20, Asma, 40, and Hasina Momtaz, 38. The others are doing well after receiving first aid, said the official.
Meanwhile, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Alam and Judge Mia are in critical condition as they sustained more than 90 per cent burns on their bodies while Tahmina Akhter 80 per cent and Hasina Mumtaz 66 per cent.

However, the child Hafsa sustained 16 per cent burn injuries, her mother Sathi Aktar sustained six per cent and Hasina 66 per cent, SM Ayub Hossain, resident physician at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
2 police officers die as microbus overturns in Narayanganj
Two Sub-Inspectors of police died on Monday as a microbus carrying the police personnel overturned and fell into a roadside pit at Sonargaon municipality in Narayanganj.
The deceased were identified as Kazi Saleh Ahmmed, son of Kazi Nurul Islam of Munsurabad village in faridpur and SM Shariful Islam, son of Charvatpara village in Gopalganj. Both were appointed at Sonargaon police station.
Injured in the accident Assistant Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam is currently being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On information two units of firefighters from Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters rushed to the spot and later a diving team joined in the rescue mission.

The accident occurred around 7pm near Duttapara area when the three cops were returning to Sonargaon police station after attending a press brefieing at the Narayanganj Superintednent of Police’s office, said SM Shafiqul Islam, Inspector (investigation) of Sonargaon police station.
As the speeding microbus overturned losing control, the locals rescued the three cops and rushed them to Sonargaon Upazila health Complex where the duty doctor announced Nurul Islam and Shariful Islam dead.

The injured ASI was sent to DMCH as his condition was critical, said Md hafizur rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Sonargaon police station.
NCC polls: Voting ends peacefully, counting begins
Voting in the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election ended on Sunday without report of any untoward incident.
Balloting for the election started at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break.
Counting of votes began shortly after the voting ended.

Voters exercised their franchise in a festive mood using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Long queues were seen as voters turned up at the polling stations to cast their votes braving cold weather and fear of Covid infection.
Besides, returning officer Mahfuza Akter said voter turnout in NCC election is good as 40% voters exercised their franchise till noon.
“The number of voters increased after noon. Some 40% people have cast their votes in the election till now,” she told UNB on Sunday.
Seven candidates are running for the post of the NCC mayor including ruling party nominee Selina Hayat Ivy, her principal rival Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, a veteran BNP who has been contesting as an independent candidate.
Selina Hayat Ivy cast her vote at Deubhog Kalrab polling center around 9:30 am while Taimur cast his vote at Masdair Primary Government School around 10 am.
‘Boat will surely win,’ says Ivy
Selina Hayat Ivy, the Awami League nominated mayoral candidate in Narayanganj City Corporation election, expressed her hope of winning the election saying she is cent percent sure over ‘Boat’s win.
Ivy came up with the remark while talking to reporters after casting her vote at Deobhog Shishu Bagh Government Primary School center Sunday morning.
“Till now balloting for the election is going on peacefully and I request the law enforcing agencies to provide their assistance so that people can cast their vote. If votes are cast neutrally then I am 100% sure of winning the election as I have a deep relation with the people of Narayanganj,” she said.
She said she is hopeful of the victory of ‘Boat’ and sought assistance from the law enforcing agencies to hold a free and fair election.
About the use of EVM, Ivy said “As the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is new so voters are taking a bit more time to cast their votes.”

However, there are some 42,418 first-time voters.
Security tightened up
Around 5,000 law enforcing personnel have been deployed for 192 polling centers of NCC election each having 26 members.
