Mild heat wave may sweep Dhaka, 3 other divisions: BMD
Mild heat wave may sweep parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions in 24 hours from 9am on Monday (May 29, 2023), said Bangladesh Metrological Department .
Besides, weather may remain mainly dry over the country, having chances of rain or thunder showers at one or two places in Khulna division.

Day temperature may rise by (1-2)°C and night temperature may rise slightly over the country, said a bulletin of BMD.
The country’s highest temperature 36.6 degree Celsius was recorded in Barishal’s Khpupara on Sunday while the lowest temperature was recorded on Monday at 22.0 degrees Celsius in Tetulia.

Ranis, wind may lash Dhaka, 7 other divisions: BMD
Different parts of the country including Dhaka will experience rains or thunder showers in 24 hours from 9am on Saturday (May 27, 2023).
“Rains or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at many places over Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal & Chattogram divisions with hails at isolated places over the country,” said a bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
The highest temperature was recorded at 35.6 degrees Celsius in Dhaka on Friday while the lowest temperature was recorded at 21.0 degrees Celsius in Bogura on Saturday.
The weather office recorded the highest 16 mm rainfall in Khulna and Feni districts in 24 hours till 9 am today.

A mild heat wave is sweeping over Khulna division and the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, and Madaripur and it may abate from some places, it read. Day and Night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
Wind direction and speed at Dhaka were recorded as 10-15 kph East/southeasterly, with temporary gusting to 30-40 kph.
The country’s highest temperature was recorded at 36.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday in Khulna and the lowest temperature was recorded in Tetulia at 20.2 degrees Celsius.

A mild heat wave is sweeping over Khulna division and the districts of Madaripur & Pabna and it may abate from some places, it read.
Day and Night temperature may fall slightly over the country.
The country’s highest temperature was recorded at 36.8 degrees Celsius on Monday in Jashore and the lowest temperature was recorded in Nikli and Rajarhat at 24.0 degrees Celsius.

Rain brings much needed relief, disrupts rush hour commute in Dhaka
Dhaka saw light rainfall this morning, which helped improve the air quality and provide relief from the heat.
The weather department recorded 50 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, till 6 am today (May 18, 2023), said Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Several districts had rain since last night, and Dhaka will likely be drenched again in the afternoon and tonight, he said.

The rain in the morning, however, caused gridlock on several major streets in Dhaka, and city dwellers were stuck on the road during rush hour.
People, especially office and school goers, struggled to reach their destinations in the rain due to lack of public transport in the morning.
CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers and rickshaw-pullers were seen charging fares higher than usual.

People were seen heading towards schools to drop their children with umbrellas and raincoats while traffic police were seen struggling to control vehicle movement during the rain.
Cyclone Mocha starts crossing Cox’s Bazar with speed of up to 215 kmph: BMD
The cyclonic storm Mocha has started crossing the coastal district of Cox’s Bazar and the neighbouring country Myanmar’s north coast with the speed of up to 215 km per hour (kmph), according to the latest bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Tariful Newaz Kabir, a meteorologist of the BMD, told UNB that the cyclone has started crossing Cox’s Bazar and “it will completely cross Bangladesh between afternoon and evening today (May 14, 2023).”
The speed of wind may increase with time, he added.

Cyclone Mocha, located over east central Bay and adjoining areas, kept moving north-northeastwards and kept intensifying, the earlier BMD bulletin read.
Around 6 am today, the cyclone was located 385 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 305 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 450 km south of Mongla port and 370 km south of Payra port, said the BMD bulletin.
The coastal districts of Chattogram and Barishal divisions have already started experiencing the peripheral effects of the very severe cyclonic storm in the form of rain, the bulletin reads.

BMD said the maximum sustained wind speed near the storm's centre was about 190 kph, rising to 215 kph, in gusts or squalls.
Earlier in the morning, Afroza Sultana, an assistant meteorologist of the BMD, told UNB that there is no possibility yet that Cyclone Mocha will turn into a super cyclonic storm.
BMD in its update said the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar and Chattogram and the nearby islands and low-lying Char areas may face tidal surges 8 to 12 feet above the normal tide.

Maritime port of Cox's Bazar has been advised to keep hoisted great danger signal no. 10. Maritime ports of Chattogram and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted great danger signal no. 8, said the report.
On the other hand, the maritime port of Mongla has been advised to keep hoisted local warning signal no. 4.
The coastal district of Cox’s Bazar and its offshore islands and chars will come under great danger signal no 10, according to the BMD.

Under the peripheral effect of the cyclone and steep pressure gradient, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by the wind driven surge, 8-12 feet above normal tide.

Under the effects of Cyclone Mocha, Chattogram, Sylhet and Barishal divisions are likely to experience heavy (44-88mm) to very heavy rainfall. Due to very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places in the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Chattogram.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice, the bulletin also said.

The cyclonic storm Mocha is likely to cross Cox’s Bazar and North Myanmar between 9am and 3pm today (May 14, 2023), according to the latest bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Mocha, located over east central Bay and adjoining areas, kept moving north-northeastwards and kept intensifying, it reads.
The cyclonic storm was located at 490 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 410 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 530 km south of Mongla port and 460 km south of Payra port, said the BMD bulletin.

The coastal districts under Chattogram and Barishal divisions have already started experiencing the peripheral effects of the very severe cyclonic storm in the form of rain, it reads.
BMD said the maximum sustained wind speed near the storm's centre was about 190 kph, rising to 210 kph, in gusts or squalls. This was up from 180-200 kph in the evening, meaning the storm was still gathering strength.
Afroza Sultana, an assistant meteorologist of the BMD, told UNB this morning that there is no possibility yet that Cyclone Mocha will turn into a super cyclonic storm.

“We can predict that there is no possibility of Mocha turning into a super cyclone after observing its characteristics so far,” she said.
There were some rumours that the cyclone had already turned into a “super cyclone”, but an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) update pointed out that it is called a super cyclone when the maximum sustained speed crosses 221 km per hour, which is not yet the case.

Mocha shows no sign of weakening; 190-210 kph winds near centre in BMD's midnight update
Cyclone Mocha, located over east central Bay and adjoining areas, kept moving north-northeastwards and kept intensifying between the Bangladesh Meteorological Department or BMD’s evening and midnight updates on Saturday.
The weather system was located at 490 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 410 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 530 km south of Mongla port and 460 km south of Payra port, said the BMD in its special update issued at 12am Saturday night (0000 hrs Sunday).
In BMD’s previous update at 6pm Saturday, the storm was located 605 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 525 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 625 km south of Mongla port and 565 km south of Payra port.

It is likely to intensify further, keep moving in a north-northeasterly direction and likely cross the Cox's Bazar-north Myanmar coast anytime between 9am to 3pm on Sunday, May 14 (tomorrow) it said. In this case, BMD’s midnight update did shorten the window for it to make landfall, as earlier it had said 9am-6p Sunday in the evening update.
It also said the coastal districts of Chattogram and Barishal divisions had started experiencing the peripheral effects of the very severe cyclonic storm in the form of rain.
BMD said the maximum sustained wind speed near the storm's centre was about 190 kph rising to 210 kph in gusts/squalls. This was up from 180-200 kph in the evening update, meaning the storm was still gathering strength.

Chattogram, Sylhet and Barishal divisions are likely to experience heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy rainfall (89 mm and above). Due to the very heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Chattogram.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice, the bulletin also said.
Cyclone Mocha: 446 cyclone shelters ready as panic grips Bagerhat’s coastal areas
As the Cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, panic gripped the residents of coastal areas of Bagerhat district due to the vulnerable state of dyke at several points.
Residents of Sharankhola, Baleshwar, Pashur in Mongla and Panguchhi in Morelganj upazilas are passing sleepless nights, worrying over when and where the storm and high tide will hit.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Mocha is likely to make landfall on Cox’s Bazar coast by Sunday (May 14).
If the water rises 5 feet above normal, a number of villages will be flooded as 11km of embankment is at risk while around 25,000 shrimp enclosures may be washed away, said locals.

At least 446 cyclone shelters have been prepared in the district to accommodate people while 98% of boro paddy has been harvested in the district.
Around 11 km of embankment at different points is in vulnerable condition. Many villages in the district will be inundated if the tidal water rises.

Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country having chances rain or thunder showers at one or two places over Sylhet division, said a BMD bulletin.
Besides, day and night temperature may rise slightly over the country.
A low pressure area is likely to be formed over Southeast Bay, it added.
