Cox’s Bazar schoolgirl rape: Prime accused, 2 others held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have detained three people including the prime accused in a case over violating a schoolgirl in Cox’s Bazar.
They were detained from different parts of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar district s on Monday, said Commanding officer of Rab-15 Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Islam Sarkar on Tuesday.

Md Ashique, 27, son of Nazrul Islam of Uttar Nunuachhara of Cox’s Bazar district town, was detained from Anwara upazila of Chattogram district around 11:30 pm.
The elite force members also detained Kamrul, no 4 accused in the case and Mohammad Shaheen, manager of Mom’s Guest House, from different areas of Cox’s Bazar district on Monday night, he said while speaking at a press briefing.
During preliminary interrogation, Ashique reportedly confessed to his guilt to Rab officials.
On December 13, Ashique along with two others picked the girl up in a vehicle when she was returning to her home.

Later, they took the girl to Mom’s Guest House where they violated the girl repeatedly after keeping her confined there for two days.
On December 18, father of the girl, lodged a complaint against nine people and police later recorded the case.
Launch fire: One owner held in Keraniganj
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested Hamjalal Sheikh, one of the owners of launch MV ‘Avijan-10’, in connection with the deadly fire incident in the launch that left 41 people dead and many more injured.
ANM Imran Khan, Assistant Director (ASP) of Legal and Media Wing of Rab, said Hamjalal was held from Keraniganj early Monday.

His arrest followed Dhaka Marine Court’s warrants for the arrest of four owners and four master drivers of the launch as a case filed by the Department of Shipping.
The accused in the case are four owners of the launch company, ‘Messars Al Araf and Company’, Md Hamjalal Sheikh, Md Shamim Ahmed, Md Rasel Ahmed, and Ferdous Hasan Rabby, in-charge master of Avijan-10 Md Riaz Sikder, in-charge driver Masum Billah, second master Khalilur Rahman, second driver Abul Kalam.
Sagar-Runi murder case: Submission of probe report deferred for 84th time
A Dhaka court on Sunday asked the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to submit by January 24 the probe report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
With this, the report submission in the case has been deferred for 84 times.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chadra Odhikari fixed the date after hearing.

On March 2 last year, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) submitted a progress report in Sagar-Runi murder case in affidavit form to the Attorney General’s Office.
According to the report, two unidentified people were involved in the murder.
Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were found dead at their rented apartment in the city’s West Rajabazar area on 11 February 2012.
Nousher Ali roman, brother of Runi filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Police Station on the following day.
Police arrested Tanvir in connection with the murder case on October 1, 2012. Later, he secured bail in 2014.

Law enforcers have so far arrested eight people, including Tanvir, in connection with the murder case.
The seven other suspects are Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Abu Syed, Mintu alias Baggira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Quamrul Hasan alias Arun, security guard Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir and Palash Rudra Pal.
Suspended Dewanganj mayor Shahnewaz held with drugs from Dhaka hotel
Suspended Dewanganj mayor Shahnewaz Shahan Shah was detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a government official during a programme on Victory Day.
A RAB team conducted a drive at Hotel De Meridian in Dhaka’s Uttara area and detained Shahnewaz this morning, ASP Imran Khan, assistant director (legal and media wing) at RAB HQ, told UNB.
During the drive, RAB men seized drugs including Yaba, marijuana, and cash Tk 3 lakh from his possession, director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB Commander Khandaker Al Moin said at a press briefing after the detention.
Shahnewaz used to intake drugs, he said.

5 suspected robbers arrested in Patuakhali: Rab
Five suspected members of a robbery gang were arrested in the early hours of Friday during a drive by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at the Galachipa area in Patuakhali.
The arrestees are- Md Khalil Jamaddar,50, the main coordinator of the gang, Md Mahtab Peda,33, Md Jamal Akand, 36, Md Masum alias Monsur Khalifa, 46, and Md Minaj Khan, said Rab in a press release issued on Friday.

The pirates were arrested over recent incidents of robbery, abduction of fishing boats at Patharghata, Barguna, and Patuakhali area, it said.
‘TikTok’ video maker held in city
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested a TikTok video maker from the city’s Mohammadpur area allegedly for cheating people using fake identity in social media platforms.
The arrestee is Md Abdur Rakib alias TikTok Raj, 26, son of late Abdur Rahim of Naogaon’s Niyamatpur.

According to a media release of Rab Headquarters, a team of Rab-2 and Rab-5 arrested him after conducting a drive in Mohammadpur area on Monday.
During the drive, a mobile phone, seven SIM cards, memory card, Rab uniform, fake ID card, whistler, boots etc. were seized from his possession.
During primary interrogation, Tiktok Raj confessed to his involvement in various criminal activities in the virtual world with his fake identity as a ‘member of law enforcement agency’.
He used to develop illicit relationship with women alluring them in social media platform and realized money after blackmailing them, said the press release.

Tiktok Raj, who works as a security in a hotel in Bogura, used to threaten them of circulating their indecent photos on social media platforms to realise money from them.
Legal processes are underway in this regard, said the release.
Ex-wheat scientist’s killing: Mastermind among 2 held in city
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Monday arrested two people including the mastermind in connection with the murder of the former chief scientific officer of Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI), from Gabtoli Bus Stand in the city.
The arrestees were identified as Mohamamd Saiful Islam, 26 and Zakir Hossian, 37, mastermind in the killing incident.

Tipped off, a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive in Gabtoli area and held them on Sunday night.
On November 11, Anwar Shaheed, 72, was stabbed to death by an attacker in city’s Shyamoli area.
Ferdous Sultana, sister of the victim lodged a case at Adabar Police station.
‘Arms factory’ busted in Cox’s Bazar; 3 Rohingys held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive on Monday unearthed an ‘arms making factory’ and arrested three Rohingyas from near a Rohingya camp in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Ten firearms and a huge quantity of arms making equipment were seized during the drive conducted on a hill adjacent to Extension-4 Rohingya camp in the early morning, said Rab-15 commander Lt Col Khairul Islam.

The arrestees are Md Baitullah, 19, his brother Habib Ullah of Kutupalong camp C-1 and Mohammd Hasun,24 of G block of the camp.
Arms dealer moonlighting as bus helper caught by Rab-3
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an illegal arms dealer and recovered four one-shooter guns from Tejgaon industrial area of the capital on Saturday.
The alleged arms dealer was identified as Md. Qayyum Mia, 35. He was also a transport helper.
Based on specific intelligence, RAB came to know that Md. Qayyum Mia, moonlighting as a transport helper on a bus plying the Dhaka-Mymensingh route, has been involved in illegal arms trading for a long time. RAB-3 increased its intelligence surveillance and started collecting information about Md. Qayyum Mia.

Based on secret information, an operational team of the Rab-3 conducted a special operation in Tejgaon Industrial Area on Sunday morning and arrested Qayyum along with four one-shooter guns, said Additional SP Bina Rani Das of Rab-3 battalion headquarters.
During the preliminary interrogation, Qayyum said that he was secretly trading arms with miscreants and terrorists for the purpose of making money under the guise of a helper.
5 teen gang members held in Chattogram
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested five members of a teen gang from Lalkhan Bazar area in Chattogram city.
The arrestees are Md Arif alias Lokman, 27, Md Hridoy, 20, Md Shukur, 21, Md Arif, 19, and Md Mir Hossain, 19, of Chattogram city.
According to a media release of Rab headquarters, a team of Rab-7 arrested the five conducting a drive in Lalkhan Bazar area on Saturday noon after receiving a complaint over assaulting a construction worker for extortion by them.

Later, Rab seized cash Tk 44,500 and a sharp weapon from their possession.
During interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they are active members of a teen gang and have been involved in extortion in different areas of Chittagong city for a long time.
The arrestees were handed over to Khulshi police station to take further legal action, said the release.
