3 new national professors appointed
Three eminent educationists have been appointed as national professors for five years.
They are-- Professor Emeritus and former vice chancellor of Chattogram University, Alamgir Mohammad Sirajuddin, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh President (BADAS) Professor AK Azad Khan, and president of Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society and Gastro liver Foundation, Bangladesh, Professor Mahmud Hasan.
A gazette notification was issued on Thursday by The Ministry of Education.
It announced their appointments in line with the National Professor (appointment, conditions and facilities) Resolution of 1981.
It said that the educationists will fulfil the duties and enjoy various facilities of national professors in accordance with the resolution.
The issued order will be effective soon, the notice said.
DU to take exams online from July 1 if Covid situation remains unchanged
Dhaka University’s Academic Council on Thursday (May 6, 2021) decided to hold the final examinations online from July 1 if the coronavirus situation does not improve in the meantime.
Confirming the matter, Pro Vice-Chancellor (academic) Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal said the council decided to hold final examinations of all batches online from July 1 if the current Covid-19 situation does not improve by June.

“All the deans have been asked to formulate a strategic plan within two weeks on how the online tests will be conducted,” Maksud added.
The examinations can be taken through different ways including MCQ , assignments, open book exam, short written exam. Total marks and exam time will be reduced but credit will remain changed, said a press release signed by the university public relations officer.
Moreover, computer based practical exams will also be held online. Lab exams will be held maintaining social distance and hygiene rules, it added.

The decision came from a virtual meeting of the DU Academic Council with VC Prof M Akhtaruzzaman in the chair on Thursday evening.
University pro vice chancellor (administration) Dr Md Samad, Pro-vc (education) Prof Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal, deans of different faculties, chairmmen of different departments and academic council members were present at the council meeting.
VC Akhtaruzzaman said, “The council has decided to take final exams online since the midterm exams have already been held this way,"

The teachers will be provided with necessary training about taking online examinations in the meantime, he added.
The regular academic activities at Dhaka University have been at a standstill since March 18 last year due to the outbreak of coronavirus. This has been a reason of immense frustration among the university’s students, especially those studying in final year.
Meanwhile, during the last one year, students participated online classes and appeared tests and midterms for their respective courses virtually.

The Deans Committee of Dhaka University have decided to hold the final examinations of all academic years online if the coronavirus situation does not improve in the meantime.
The recommendation came from a virtual meeting of the committee comprising deans of all faculties.
Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, pro-vice-chancellor of the university, confirmed the news to UNB.

“ We are hoping that the Covid situation will improve by July. In that case, we will take examinations in person from 1 July. But if the status quo does not change favourably, we will go for online examinations,” he said.
He also added that the Deans of all the faculties have been asked to formulate strategies within two weeks on how the exams will be taken.
The teachers will be provided with necessary training about taking online examinations in the meantime, he claimed.

‘London School of Commerce’ in Dhaka running illegally: UGC
The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) has found that an unauthorized study centre is operating in Dhaka using the name ‘London School of Commerce’.
The study centre named ‘London School of Commerce Dhaka (LSC Dhaka)’ did not receive permission from the government and also the UGC to run here, said a UGC release on Tuesday.
The study centre offers different diploma, bachelor and master and doctoral degrees under three UK institutions ---Wrexham Glyndŵr University, University of Bedfordshire and Scottish Qualifications Authority.
The study centre opened a website (https://www.lscdhaka.org/) in 2007.

Its admission ads have recently come to the notice of UGC. The LSC Dhaka has been running its operation since 2005.
The LSC Dhaka opened two offices in Dhaka – one at Gulshan Centre in Gulshan-2 and another at Ocean Tower in Banani.
The centre offers BA (Hons) Business Studies, Master of Business Administration, Foundation in Business, Professional Diploma in International Business degrees from the two places.

The duration of the courses is from eight month to two years. The admission in the courses will start in May next.
According to its website, LSC Dhaka in collaboration with its partner universities has been offering fast-track degrees like BA (Hon’s) and MBA at affordable fees.
It is said that the students of LSC Dhaka would have scope to transfer their credits to the international campus of its partner universities located in different places including London, Malta, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

UGC member Prof Dr Biswajit Chanda, who is in-charge of private universities, said no branch or study centre of any foreign university and institution can operate admission or academic activities in Bangladesh.
It is absolutely illegal according to the articles 3 (3) and 39 of the Private University Act 2010, he said.
The UGC member asked the students and jobseekers to remain alert over the admission in such study centres.

Prof Chanda asked the authorities concerned of the government to take measures to shut down the unauthorized study centre soon.
Dental colleges entry tests rescheduled for June 11
The admission tests to all dental colleges across the country for the academic year 2020-21 have been rescheduled for June 11.
The previous date of intake tests was on April 30.

The admission test for all dental colleges and dental units has been rescheduled due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in the second wave of pandemic, said a notification signed by Dr AKM Ahsan Habib, director of Directorate General of Health Services (Medical Education).

Buet admission test: Application deadline extended to May 3
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has stretched the application deadline of April 24 for its 2020-21 undergraduate programme to May 3.
Now, the candidates can submit their application for the Buet entrance test by 3pm on May 3.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the admission committee on Saturday, Professor Dr Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed, chairman of the committee and also dean of architecture and planning faculty, confirmed UNB.
Earlier Buet said, admission seekers would be required to sit for preliminary selection exams, from which candidates would be selected for the final exam scheduled to be held on June 10.
The eligibility list for the preliminary admission test, slated to be held on May 31 and June 1, will be published on May 5; and the one for the final exam will be released on June 5.

IU running without Pro-VC, treasurer
The administrative, economic and academic activities of Islamic University in Kushtia are being hampered badly as the two posts of pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer have been vacant for 14 months and 8 months respectively.
University sources said the tenure of former treasurer Professor M Selim Toha came to an end on August 20 last while the tenure of pro-vice-chancellor Professor M Shahinoor Rahman expired on February 23 this year.
Since then, the two important posts of the university remain vacant.

According to IU Engineering Office, the university is currently working on an upward expansion of ten-storey male and female residential halls. Ten contractors are working simultaneously to implement the works.
Treasurer of the university is the head of the vigilant team and also the head of the tender evaluation committee of the university.
Due to the absence of treasurer, IU vice-chancellor Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam is working as the head of these team-committees. Various functions of finance and account sections are also in standstill situation.
IU acting chief engineer Munshi Shahid Uddin M Tarek said that the treasurer of the university is the head of all financial and development activities. Without him, no work really happens on time. The university vice-chancellor is recommending various works including approval of various bills in his executive power that really stress matters for him.
The vacancies in the posts of Pro-VC and treasurer have created a vacuum in the administration and hampered the flow of the university’s regular financial and administrative activities as well, Islamic University Teachers Association president Kazi Akhtar Hossain said.

In order to restore normalcy in the university’s administrative and economic activities, the government should appoint a pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer of the university soon.
He also called upon the ministry concerned to take appropriate steps to give the appointments to the posts.
A number of senior teachers, who are the aspirants of the positions, are lobbying with government high-ups for getting appointment as pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer of the university.
BHDS of RU to hold online debate competition
Bangamata Hall Debating Society (BHDS) of Rajshahi University will be hosting a baroari Bangla debate competition under the label of “1st BHDS National Baroari Debate Competition 2021” for observing the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence.
The event will start on April 08 and the final round will be held on April 24.
The whole event will be held online.

The debate competition is open for all students of Bangladeshi universities.
The first round will be held from April 08 to April 18. Then the first-round winners will participate in the final round.
The convenor of the event is Tazrin Ahmed, who is a student of Law department of Rajshahi University while Nabanita Bishwas, Khusita Rahman Jenvi and Nabilah Haque Simin are co-convenor.

BHDS featured a debating workshop, which will be held on April 11 while Tahmida Isha, adviser of the organization and also a student of Accounting and Information System department of the university will speak.
Students from Rajshahi University, Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chattogram University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, among others, universities will be on the event as judge.
AFMC, Army Medical College admission tests postponed
Admission tests to the Armed Forces Medical College and five Army medical colleges, scheduled for April 9, have been postponed amid the countrywide lockdown to contain the transmission of coronavirus.
The Inter Service Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) made the announcement in a press release on Monday.
A new date for the 2020-21 academic session entry tests will be announced later, the ISPR said.
MBBS admission test results: 40% pass rate
The results of the 2020-21 admission test for the MBBS course at the country’s public and private medical colleges were published on Sunday, with 3 out of every 5 candidates who sat the test failing.
Ali Nur, secretary of the Health Education Department under the Health Ministry, announced the results at around 7:00 pm from the health directorate.
A total of 48,975 candidates (39.86 percent) passed the test this year, nearly four times the number of available seats in 47 public and 70 private medical colleges of the country.

There were a total of 116,792 aspirants who participated in the admission test this year.
The qualified students will get the chance to get enrolled first at public medical colleges and then at private ones on merit basis.
