3 dead as sand pile collapses in Rajbari
Three people died when a sand pile collapsed on them while loading it on a truck at Joikura ghat in Sadar upazila of Rajbari district on Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahim Sheikh, 55, a sand trader; Maruf Sheikh, 22, driver of an excavator machine; and Ripon Ali alias Imran, 38, driver of the truck in which sand was being loaded.

Quoting local people, Eskarul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rajbari Police Station, said the trio went to load sand around 11 pm.

At one stage, a big chunk of sand collapsed on them, leaving the trio dead on the spot.
2 arrested over murder of Ctg AL leader
Police have arrested Jubo League activist Jasim and his son Mohammad Rahat, 23, the main accused in the murder case of Chattogram Awami League leader Mohammad Hossain Manna.
They were arrested from Bhairab Police Station area of Kishoreganj on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
More details will be announced at a press briefing tonight (Tuesday) at 10:30 pm, Additional Deputy Commissioner (media and PR) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Spina Rani Pramanik told the media on Tuesday afternoon.
Manna, member of the organising committee of Saraipara Ward Awami League, was stabbed to death on Sunday on the road next to Saraipara Haji Ashraf Ali Road Madrasa (Lucky Hotel Galley) in Pahartali of Chattogram.

According to local sources, there was a dispute between local Jubo League leaders Jasim and Manna over the distribution of election money of Awami League MP Mohiuddin Bachchu in the recent by-election to Pahartoli Double Mooring parliamentary constituency.
Nurul Amin, a ward councillor of Ward-12, tried to resolve the dispute but failed. Jasim claimed that Manna embezzled Tk 8,000 brought for election workers. There was also a fight between the two sides over the dispute. Later, Manna filed a case at Pahartali Police Station over the matter.

On Sunday afternoon, when the police came to investigate the case, a fight broke out between the two men and soon after the police left, Manna was stabbed to death in a fight between the two parties.

Manna's family later filed a murder case at Pahartali Police Station.
'Critically endangered' Baghair fish caught in Goalanda, sells for Tk 49,000
A rare Baghair fish, also known as the devil catfish or Gangetic goonch, weighing 37.5 kg, was netted from the Jamuna river at Goalanda ghat in Rajbari district on Tuesday.
The giant fish was caught by the net of some fishermen at Char Kalabagan area of the river, eight kilometres away from the ghat, in the morning and Masud Molla, a fish trader purchased the fish from the fishermen for Tk 45,000, Tk 1200 per kg, in an open auction at the market.
Later, he sold the fish at Tk 49,000 in the afternoon. It will be brought to Dhaka on Wednesday morning.

Mostafa Al Rajib, Goalanda Upazila Fisheries officer, said the Baghair fish is a rare fish. However, he said he is not aware about the legal prohibition of catching or selling such rare fish.
The fish is also a protected wildlife species of the Bangladesh Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012. Besides, it is also marked as "critically endangered" in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), said Rathindra Kumar Biswas, Animal and Biodiversity Conservation officer of Wildlife prevention unit.
President asks for support to preserve local fish species
As per the law, fishing, buying, selling, transporting or possessing of such fishes is a punishable offence.
Three crushed under bus wheels in Cumilla
Three people were killed as a bus knocked them down on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Chandina upazila of Cumilla district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain, 45, Abul Kalam and Baharam.

Md Mamun, in-charge of Illiotganj highway police outpost, said the bus first hit a motorbike and then two pedestrians at Harikhola in the upazila at 10am, leaving motorcyclist Alamgir dead on the spot .
The injured were rushed to Chandina upazila health complex where they succumbed to injuries.

Driver killed in Gazipur bus plunge; 2 injured
A bus driver was killed and two others were injured as a bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting an electric pole in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Mofizul Islam, 30, son of late Abdul Hossain Ali of Sohadia village in Sreepur upazila. However, the detailed identities of injured Maruf and Sajib could not be known yet.

The accident occurred around 6:45am when the bus carrying workers of 'Smart Factory' hit an electric pole and fell into the roadside ditch near Sohadia (Naljura Bridge) area on Mauna-Bormi regional road of Bormi union, said Aminul Islam, sub-inspector of Sreepur police station.
"The driver died on the spot," he said.

Locals rescued Maruf and Sajib and sent them to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.
Police recovered the body from the scene.
Asma Khatun, a doctor at the Health Complex, said the injured were sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Truck-auto rickshaw collision leaves AL leader dead in Sylhet
A local Awami League leader was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck at Charkhai area in Sylhet's Beanibazar upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Fakhrul Islam, 45, son of late Rois Miah of Parkul Barabari of Rajaganj Union of Kanighat upazila of Sylhet. He was the science and technology affairs secretary of Rajaganj Union Awami League unit.
The accident occurred around 8 pm when the CNG autorickshaw collided head-on with the truck coming from the opposite direction in the Charkhai bazar area on Sylhet-Zakiganj road, leaving the trio injured, said Debdulal Dhar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Beanibazar police station.
Fakhrul died on way to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The two others are now receiving treatment at the hospital, he said.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
“We seized the truck and three wheeler from the spot but it’s driver managed to flee the scene,” added the officer.
Generator explosion at Sylhet gas station: Manager succumbs to injuries at DMCH
One of the nine victims, who suffered serious burn injuries in a generator explosion at a CNG filling station in Sylhet's Mirabazar area, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday night.
Rumel Siddique, 28, manager of the filling station, breathed his last at around 7:30 pm at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery while undergoing treatment there.
He was a resident of Korbantila area under Sylhet Airport Police Station.
Ahmed Shahnur, cousin of the victim, said that Rumel was in critical condition. "My brother died around 7:30 pm while undergoing treatment at the hospital," he added.

On September 5, nine people suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out following a generator explosion at the CNG filling station.
Seven of the injured were employees of the gas station. The other two were pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses said the generator at Biroti Filling Station suddenly exploded at around 7 pm last Tuesday, resulting in a fire.

On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after an hour of frantic effort.
The injured who suffered 15-40 percent burn, were first taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Md Belal Hossain, senior station officer of the Sylhet Fire Service, said there was a lack of fire safety at the gas station. Initially, the explosion appeared to have been caused by the weakness of the gas valve.
32-year-old man dies being crushed under train in B'baria
A 32-year-old man died when a moving train ran him over while he was crossing the rail tracks at Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria on Monday
The incident happened at Druin village in Mogra union of the upazila on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Monir Mia of Daruin village. He was a power trolley driver by profession. Jasim Uddin Khandaker, inspector of Akhaura Railway Police Station, confirmed the matter.
Monir was going home through the road adjacent to the gate of Bir Shrestha Mostafa Kamal's grave in the Druin area, said the inspector.

At the time, trains came from both sides on the Dhaka-Chattogram railway line, and he was cut under the Chattogram-bound express train, killing him on the spot, said hte police official.
The railway police recovered the body of the deceased. Legal action is under way in this regard, he said.

4 deer die while being shifted to Bogura from Dhaka Zoo
Four deer have reportedly died while being shifted to Bogura TMSS (Thengamara Mohila Sangha), an animal rearing sanctuary centre, from the National Zoo in Dhaka on Sunday.
Sources said the TMSS authorities purchased five deer from the authorities concerned of National Zoo after exchanging Tk 50,000 per deer following the necessary process.

The TMSS authority alleged that the authorities concerned of the national zoo neither provided any assistance nor any advice in transporting the deer.
The deer were made unconscious through punishing injection before being transported but after reaching in Bogura, four declared dead as they failed to regain consciousness of the deer.

Dr Abdus Samad, Sadar upazila livestock officer, said on information, they visited the sanctuary and confirmed the death of four deer.

Earlier, on May 28, six spotted deer were brought in the same way from the national zoo but two of them died after getting out from the zoo while another died on the way to Bogura.
Besides, peacocks and sheep are being reared in the TMSS and the authorities have taken a plan to bring monkeys at the sanctuary centre.
Cousins drown in Beanibazar pond
Two children drowned in a pond at Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet on Monday.
The incident happened in Kachtula Jame Masjid Pond around 12 pm on Monday. Devdulal Dhar,officer-in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station, confirmed the matter.
Student drowns in Sitakunda waterfall
The deceased were identified as Abdullah Tawsif, 6, of Kachtul village under the Mollapur union of the upazila, and his cousin Nura, 5, of the same area, he said.
On infirmation, the bodies were recovered and handed over to the family members without a post-mortem, said the OC.
