Rangamati, Aug 30 (UNB) –A suspected robber was hacked to death while ‘committing robbery’ at a house at Sapchhari in Sadarupazila early Thursday.
Quoting local people, Sattyajit Barua, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said a group of robbers swooped on the house of Jalkumar Karbari and kept the house inmates hostages at gunpoint.
While committing robbery, the robbers asked Jalkumar to open his almirah. As he refused to do so, the robbers beat up Jalkumar mercilessly, leaving him injured.
At one stage, Jalkumar hit a member of the gang with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured.
Hearing screams of the house inmates, when local people rushed in the robbers fled away.
The injured robber died on way while fleeing the spot, said police.
Chattogram, Aug 30 (UNB) – Two people were killed and four others injured when a bus rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the city’s Bakolia area on Thursday.
One of the deceased was identified as Mohammad Jamal, 40 while the identity of another could not yet be known.
The accident took place around 8:15 am when the bus crashed into the CNG- run auto-rickshaw, leaving two people dead on the spot and four others injured, said Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of Chittagong Medical College Hospital police camp.
The injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
Kushtia, Aug 30 (UNB) - A baby girl, who sustained injuries after falling down from her mother's lap when a bus hit them in Kushtia district town on Tuesday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Thursday.
Deceased Afifa, one-year-old daughter of Harun-or-Rashid, succumbed to her injuries around 4:45 am, said her father.
Afifa fell from her mother's lap when a bus of 'Gandharaj Paribahan' hit her mother Rina Akter from behind while crossing the road at Chourhash intersection in the district town on Tuesday, leaving them injured.
Later, they were taken to Kushtia General Hospital from where Afifa was referred to DMCH for better treatment, her father said.
The baby died due to head injury, said Dr Sohel Mahmud, chief of DMCH forensic department, who conducted the autopsy.
Later, the body was handed over to her family around 2:30 pm.
Afifa will be buried in the family graveyard in Kustia, said her father.
The video footage of the incident went viral on the social networking site Facebook, sparking an uproar among the locals.
Meanwhile, locals including students and journalists on Wednesday formed a human chain at Chourhash Intersection demanding exemplary punishment of the driver.
Sunamganj, Aug 30 (UNB) – The death of an electric lineman in a tragic road accident in Gazinagar area of Dakhshin Sunamganj upaizila sparked protest on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Rahel Ahmed, 30, son of late Almas Ali, a resident of Bogularakara village in Joykolos and the lineman of Dirai Bidyut office.
The accident took place around 3:30 pm when a bus hit the motorcycle riding by Rahel in the area, leaving him dead on the spot, said Md Iftekhar Hossain Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Dakhshin Sunamganj Police Station.
Being angered, locals vandalised the bus, he added.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
However, the bus driver and helper fled away from the scene immediately after the incident.
Sirajganj, Aug 30 (UNB) – Two factions of Awami League could not hold their scheduled programmes in Belkuchi upazila following the imposition of section 144.
The local administration slapped the ban on holding any gathering in and around the upazila Awami League office for four hours as two groups of local ruling party men called their meetings at the same place and same time.
An AL faction, led by upazila unit President Abdul Majid Mondol, MP, and another, led by former minister Abdul Latif Biswas, also chairman of Sirajganj Zila parishad, convened meetings at the party office at 4:30pm.
Upazila nirbahi officer Oliur Rahman imposed the restriction from 3pm to 7pm to avoid any untoward situation.
