40-year-old man’s body recovered from car workshop in Gaibandha
A-40-year old man’s body was recovered from the basement of a car workshop at Panthapara area at Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.
The deceased was identified as Anath Chandra Shil, of Kaunia upazila in Rangpur.

A fire service unit and police went to the spot and recovered the body from the north side of the workshop next to the Gobindaganj Filling Station on Monday.

The man was mentally unstable and was seen roaming in the city for the last few days. But till then he was unidentified and today morning locals saw his floating body, said Gobindaganj Upazila Chairman Abdul Latif Pradhan said

Gold, diamonds worth Tk 46 lakh looted from gold shop in Chandpur
Gold and diamonds worth Tk 46 lakh were stolen from a gold shop on early Monday.
Seven to eight youths, aged between 20 and 30, broke into the shop "Shorno Bhubon" between 5:30 am and 6 am on Monday and looted 40 tolas of gold and diamonds worth Tk 5 lakh.

Badal, one of the staff members of a nearby grocery shop, found the locks of the gold shop broken at 7 am and immediately informed Manik Lal Mazumder, owner of the gold shop, and his family about the incident.
The shop is located next to Hasan Ali Government High School on the Cumilla Road of Chandpur district.
The CCTV footage showed that it took only seven to eight minutes for the robbers to steal the jewelries.

Sanjay Saha, an artisan at the gold shop,said he closed the shop and locked it in front of the shop owner at 10 pm the previous day, like he always does.
Sheikh Mohsin Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, and his team came after he came to know about the theft. CID and PBI officials went to the shop to investigate about the incident.
The shop owner told UNB that he has been in business in this area for almost two years. He suffered a loss of Tk46 lakh in the theft.

He said the thieves took no money. Their target was only gold and diamonds.
The OC said an investigation is underway. The shop owner is yet to file a case.
Power generation from Karnaphuli Power Station rises as Kaptai Lake swells
Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station is generating 203 MW of power per day due to the rise in Kaptai Lake water level.
Heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream has contributed to the rise in the lake's water.
Sources said this is the highest power generation of the power station this year.

Engineer ATM Abduz Zaher, manager of the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station, said power is being generated from all five units and 203 MW of power was generated till 9:30 am on Monday which is being transmitted to the national grid.

According to the rule curve, Kaptai Lake was initially expected to reach 99.60 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL) but the current the water level has reached 109 feet MSL, indicating the significant impact of the ongoing rains.
If the water level of the Kaptai Lake increases further, then there is a possibility of further rise in power generation, he added.

A total of 230 MW of power could be generated from Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station if all five units are operative, said Abduz Zaher.
Youth killed after being hit by train in Natore's Bagatipara
A youth was killed after being hit by a train on Baral railway bridge in Natore's Bagatipara upazila on Monday.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 25, couldn’t be known yet.

Erosion threat grips farmers in Khulna’s Rupsha; 525 hectares of cropland likely to be washed away
Over 500 farmers of several villages in Rupsa upazila under Khulna district are living amid fear of losing their cropland as no initiative has been taken in the last three years to construct the broken Shreerampur embankment to protect their land.
Farmers said there is around 525 hectares of croplands in Shreerampur char and over 500 farmers cultivate vegetables, rice and fruits on the fertile land three times a year.

But three years ago about 1.5 km of the embankment from Shreerampur Palpara to Idris Jamaddar’s brick kiln collapsed due to erosion by the Rupsha River, leaving the cropland under threat.
Local MP Abdus Salam Murshedi took an initiative to solve the problem but no visible progress was made in the construction of embankment due to some complexities that created resentment among the local people.

AHM Kamal, a farmer of the upazila who has land in Sreerampur char, said “We have been cultivating this land for generations. After meeting the region’s demand the rest of the crops are exported. We are in a great anxiety because of the river erosion which started three years ago. We are always afraid that the river water would enter the cropland and damage our crops. So I urge Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and local MP Abdus Salam Murshedi to save the farmers of the area by constructing an embankment as soon as possible.”

If the embankment collapses due to erosion, thousands of people will be affected .Croplands will be destroyed and there will be shortage of food. Gas cylinder blast in fishing trawler in Cox’s Bazar: One dies at CMCH, 8 battling for lives
A fisherman on Sunday succumbed to his burn injuries he sustained in a fire after a gas cylinder exploded inside a fishing trawler at ghat-6 of Nuniachara in Cox’s Bazar town.
The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, 20.

He breathed his last on Sunday night while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Brigadier General Md Shamim Ahsan, director of the hospital.
Osman was admitted to the hospital on Friday with 60 per cent burns.
Earlier on Friday morning, 11 fishermen suffered burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded inside a trawler at ghat-6 of Nuniachara in Bazar town of Cox’s Bazar.
Of the injured, two injured fishermen were sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

And the rest of the injured burn with 60-90 per cent, are currently being treated at the hospital and their condition is not so good, the CMCH director added. “Their respiratory tracts were also affected.”
Mizanur Rahman, ward-2 councillor of Cox’s Bazar municipality, said the cylinder exploded while cooking, leaving 11 fishermen injured.
23 crude bombs recovered near Benapole land port
Police have recovered 23 crude bombs from inside a drain on the west side of a chemical shed in the Benapole land port area.
The bombs were recovered around 8:30pm. However, no arrests were made at this time.
Police are still investigating whether the crude bombs were kept there for sabotage.
Kamal Hossain Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station, said a team of the Station led by the OC raided the premises and recovered 23 crude bombs after receiving a tip-off that a large number of crude bombs were found in a drain near chemical shed no 35 in Benapole Port area.
We are investigating who kept the bombs there, said OC Kamal.
A case has been registered in this regard.
Son dies from electrocution in Jashore; father injured
A 20-year-old youth died and his father injured from electrocution in Jashor’e Chowgacha upazila Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Tanvir Hasan Shimul, son of Jahangir Alam, 42, of Laskarpur village under Sadar union in the upazila.

Shimul’s father was undergoing treatment at 250-bed Jashore General Hospital with injuries from electric shock.
The cousin of the deceased BM Ujjal Hossain Roni said that Shimul and his father were cutting straw for cows using a locally made machine.
Suddenly, Shimul received an electric shock around 9am. As his father came to his rescue, he also got an electric shock, Ujjal said.

The neighbours rescued them and took them to Chowgacha Upazila Health Complex, where doctors in the emergency department of the hospital declared Tanvir dead on arrival.
Later, Jahangir Alam was shifted to Jashore 250-bed general hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Kaptai hanging bridge goes under water; tourists movement suspended
Rangamati district administration has restricted the movement of tourists on Kaptai Lake hanging bridge in Rangamati as it went under water following the rise in water level of in the lake amid heavy rain.
During a visit to the Kaptai lake area on Sunday morning, this correspondent found that six inches of the bridge above the Kaptai lake was inundated.Ramjan Ali, who provides rented boat service under Tourism Corporation, said due to the closure of the bridge above the Kaptai Lake they are passing idle time.

Bangladeshi shot dead ‘by BSF’ in Kurigram
A 35-year-old Bangladeshi national was shot dead allegedly by the members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Behularchar border in Rowmari upazila of Kurigram district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Manik Mia, son of Abdul Baten of Shoulmari area.
Local people said Manik along with 15-20 people went to 1062-2 S pillar of the bordering area at 12:30 am on Saturday.

The BSF members from Kuchnimara camp opened fire on them, leaving Manik dead on the spot.
However, local people managed to bring his body back.
Rup Kumar Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Roumari Police Station, said police recovered the body of Manik and took it to the local police station.

Commanding officer of BGB-35, Lieutenant Colonel Mashruki, said they heard about the incident but he could not confirm it.
