Indian held with gold bars in Chuadanga
Chuadanga, July 26 (UNB) – Customs officials detained an Indian national with seven gold bars at Joynagar check-post along Darshana border in Damurhuda uapzila on Wednesday.
The arrestee was identified as Azhar Uddin, son of Abdur Rahim Khan of Khidirpur village in West Bengal.
Tipped off, a team of customs officials conducted a drive in the area and arrested Azhar while passing through immigration check-post around 8 pm, said Saifur Rahman, deputy director of Customs Intelligence.
Later, they recovered seven gold bars, weighing 700 grams, worth Tk 35 lakh from inside Azhar’s shoes.
3 ‘drug traders’ killed in Ctg ‘gunfight’
Chattogram, July 26 (UNB) – Three suspected drug peddlers were killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Railway Canteen in city’s Khulshi area early Thursday.
Two of the deceased were identified as Jakir Hossain, 31, and Dalim Hossain, 32, of Morelganj in Bagerhat district while the identity of the other one could not be known immediately.
Being tipped off that drugs were being carried in a private car, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in the area around 3:30 am, said ASP Mimtanur Rahman of Rab-7 (Media).
When the elite force asked the private car to stop, the criminals opened fire on them forcing the elite force members to fire back in self-defence.
At one stage, Rab members recovered the bodies along with 120 kgs hemp, two firearms and bullets from the spot.
With the latest deaths, at least 151 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.

Five killed in Cox’s Bazar landslides
Cox’s Bazar, July 25 (UNB) – Five people including four members of a family were killed and four others injured in separate incidents of landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall for the last couple of days in Sadar and Ramu upazilas of the district on Wednesday.
Abdur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner, said four members of a family were killed while another injured in a landslide at Rumaliarchhara Bachamiar Ghona in the district town around 6:30 am.
The deceased were identified as Marjina Akhter, 16, Kafia Akhter, 14, Abul Khayer, 8, and Khairunnesa, 6, four children of Jamal Hossain of the area.
The incident occurred when a chunk of mud from the hill collapsed on the house of Jamal Hossain while all the house inmates were asleep, leaving four dead on the spot.
On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and recovered the bodies.
In another incident, Morshed Alam, 5, son of Zafar Alam of South Mithacharri in Ramu upazila was killed and three others injured when a chunk of mud fell of their house around 7:30 am, leaving one dead on the spot and three others injured.
The injured were taken to local hospital.
Man killed by ‘younger brother’ in Rajshahi
Rajshahi, July 25 (UNB) – A man was killed allegedly by his younger brother at Ramchandrapur in Chandrima area of the city on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Mulluk Chan Mandal, 44, son of Namazi Mandal of the area.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Chandrima Police Station, said Mulluk Chan Mandal had picked up a quarrel with his younger brother Jahangir Mandal over family feud around 6 am.
At one stage, Jahangir hit Mulluk with a sharp weapon, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
