Ex-Rohingya leader assassinated in Cox’s Bazar
Unidentified elements shot and hacked to death a former Rohingya leader of a camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Wednesday.
Jafar Alam was an ex-leader (known as Majhi in the community) of camp no.18 in the upazila.
Alam was out and about in the camp late last night when the miscreants first shot him, and then attacked him with sharp hand-held weapons around 3.30am. They left the spot soon after, Faruk Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN)-8, said.
Alam was left for dead, losing dangerous amounts of blood, but eventually was taken to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong. Even from there he had to be redirected to Chattogram to have any hope but died on the way.
Efforts are on to nab the perpetrators in this connection, the police officer added.
Palichora village in Rangpur gears up to welcome its football hero, Shopna
Rangpur's daughter Sirat Jahan Shopna, member of the Bangladesh women's football team, has made its residents proud with her role in the team clinching the title in the seven-nation SAFF Women's Championship.
Those who once mocked Shopna for her dream to become a footballer are now overjoyed with her success.
In fact, the whole district is now overwhelmed for Shopna from Palichora village of Sadyapuskarini Union, over historical triumph against Nepal in the tournament's final.
In this tournament, Bangladesh beat India 3-0 with Shopna scoring a pair of goals. She scored one goal against Pakistan.
In the final, Shopna was withdrawn due to injury soon after the kick-off.
In all, she scored four goals in this tournament.
Shopna’s mother Lipi Begum used to get angry with her for her interest in football. Later, she surrendered to the girl's indomitable will and encouraged her daughter to fulfil her dream.
Lipi said Shopna grew interest in playing football when she was in class four.
“My brother Abdul Latif took Shopna to groom her to be a footballer and since then she is moving towards her dream.”
Shopna's father Moksar Ali, a farmer, is also overwhelmed with his daughter's success.
He said, “I feel very happy. The Bangladesh women's football team won today and my daughter played in it.”
He also sought the people’s prayers so that she can do something better for the country.
Fans and journalists are thronging Shopna’s home to congratulate her parents.
Milon Khan, the coach of the newly formed Youth Sporting Club of the union, said this village is a village of women footballers.
“This is the first time that one of our daughter Shopna earned fame by winning the SAFF Championship. We have plans to give her a grand reception,” he added.
Bangladesh national women's team reached Dhaka around 1:50 pm today.
After completion of the airport formalities, the heroes of Bangladesh boarded a newly shaped and well-decorated open deck BRTC bus at about 3:30 pm for the BFF office in Motijheel from the airport.
Along the way, they were greeted by thousands of jubilant fans.
On Monday, Bangladesh defeated Nepal 3-1 in the final match, with Shamsunnahar scoring the game's first goal in the 13th minute. Krishna Rani Sarkar scored the final two goals for Bangladesh in the 42nd and 77th minutes, ensuring the nation's first SAFF Women's Championship title.

Kalsindur village in Dubaora upazila on the India-Bangladesh border in Mymensingh is all set to welcome its symbols of pride – eight members of the women's football team who have brought the SAFF glory to the country.
The "golden girls" of the village – Sanjida, Maria Manda, Sheuli Azim, Marzia Akhter, Shamsunnahar, Tahura, Sajeda, and Shamshunnahar Jr – represented the Bangladesh team that clinched the South Asian women's football crown for the first time Monday, breaking India's 12-year monopoly.
Thanks to them, the name Kalsindur has spread across the country and abroad. The once neglected village on the border of the Garo Hills is now electrified and its roads are paved due to the fame of the girls.
The stories of these girls have also made it to the textbooks of Class XI of the higher secondary level. There is a special lesson in the textbook "The Unbeaten Girls." Biographies of Sanjida, Maria, Tahura, Shamsunnahar, Sheuli, Najma Akhtar, and Marzia are recorded here.
Ans the villagers, who once could not think of letting girls play football, is now ready to welcome their heroes back with smiles, cheers and flowers.
Kalsindur School and College Assistant Professor Nazmul Haque said a joint meeting of local administration, public representatives and Kalsindur School and College authorities will be held Thursday at noon to welcome the women footballers.
Bangladesh thrashed hosts Nepal 3-1 to win the SAFF Women's Championship title at Kathmandu's Dasharath Rangasala Stadium.
During the historic final, Bangladesh got off to a great start when Kalsindur's Shamsunnahar Jr put her team in the lead in the 13th minute.
The unbeaten team arrived at Dhaka Airport around 2pm Wednesday.

Kishoreganj boat capsize: 3 bodies fished out of Brahmaputra
The bodies of three people, who went missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river two days ago, were fished out on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Shamim Mia, 30, son of Kitab Ali of Tarpasha village, Md Sifat, 16, son of Abdus Samad, and Yeasin, 7, son of Monir Hossain of Mymensingh district.
Asaduzzaman Titu, inspector at Hossainpur police station, said local people spotted the bodies of the trio floating in the river under the Dane bridge at 6am and informed cops.
Later, drivers from the local fire service recovered the bodies of the trio.
The trio met the watery grave while going to Kishoreganj to see the historical boat race on September 19.
Two bikers killed in Barishal road crash
Two young men on a bike were killed in a head-on collision with a speeding bus in the Nimtala area of Bakerganj upazila on Wedesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Nazmul Mallick,20, son of Nanna Mallick and resident of Santoshdi village of Charadi union, and Rabbi Gazi, 21, son of Jasim Gazi of the same village.
Nazmul was a first-year honors student of Government Brojomohun College in Barishal and Rabbi worked as a salesman for Bengal Biscuits.
The accident occurred around 7.30am when the passenger bus crashed into the bike coming from the opposite direction, leaving the duo severely injured, said Aminul Islam, sub-inspector at Bakerganj police station.
They were rushed to Barishal Sher-e Bangla Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival, he added.
“The bus has been seized but its driver managed to flee," said SI Aminul.
Barguna transport workers call off strike
Bus services returned to normal in Barguna district on Wednesday, with transport workers calling off their strike on Tuesday night.
The aggrieved transport workers called off their stir after the district administration assured to meet their demands, according to union leaders.
“We had a meeting with officials of the district administration on Tuesday night and they gave us an assurance to meet all our demands," said Kislu, president of Barguna district Bus, Minibus and Coach Owners' Association.

"At the same time, the district administration officials requested us to suspend the strike in view of public inconvenience. So, we’ve decided to withdraw the indefinite strike," he added.
On Monday, the transport workers went on an indefinite strike in protest against extortion and assault of Barguna transport workers by leaders and activists of Barishal Rupatoli Bus Owners' Association.
Man goes missing as goods trawler sinks in Meghna River
A man went missing when a trawler sank in the Meghna River in Chandpur district on Tuesday morning.
The victim was identified as Delwar Hossain, 35, driver of the trawler.
Md Quamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chandpur river police station, said the Shariatpur-bound goods-laden trawler with four people including its driver sank in the river near Meghna-Dakatia estuary.

All but the driver of the trawler went missing while the others managed to swim ashore.
A complaint has been lodged in this connection.
3 Rohingyas held with 1 lakh Yaba pills in Cox’s Bazar
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have detained three Rohingya men along with 1 lakh Yaba bills in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The detainees are Md Ali Hossain,34, son of Md Abdus Salam, Md Yunus,37, son of late Shahidullah, Md Hossain Ahmed,25, son of Md Hasu Mia. All are residents of Kutupalong FDMN Camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-34 conducted a drive in Tulatli Betbunia area of Rajapalang union Parishad in the upazila around 4am on Tuesday and detained the three drug peddlers, said Lieutenant Colonel Md Mehedi Hossain Kabir, commander of BGB-34.
Some of his associates managed to flee the scene.
During primary interrogation, the detainees confessed that they have been involved in Yaba smuggling through the route for a long time, he added.
The detainees were handed over to Ukhia police.
BCL activist injured in Ctg road crash dies in Dhaka
An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chattogram’s Sitakundu upazila unit, who sustained injuries in a collision between a motorcycle and a lorry in Sitakunda upazila six days ago, died at a Dhaka hospital on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as college student Mehraj Bhuiyan, 22, a resident of the upazila and an activist of union unit BCL.
He succumbed to his injuries at IBN Sina Specialized Hospital in the capital in the morning while undergoing treatment, said Barabkunda UP Chairman Sadakat Ullah Miyaji.
On September 14, Mehraj was injured as a lorry hit his motorcycle at Faujdarhat of the upazila.
He was taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) first and then to the Dhaka hospital, said the UP chairman.
Fire at Tongi warehouse under control
A fire that broke out at a warehouse in Gazipur’s Tongi area on Tuesday morning has been brought under control, officials said.
The fire started at 9am inside the rented warehouse in the Millgate area of Tongi.

Five fire tenders were pressed into service but it took them nearly one-and-a-half hours to contain the flames, said Iqbal Hassan, station officer of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Only a probe can ascertain the exact amount of damages, he said.
