3 die in two separate road crashes in Cumilla
At least three people were killed in separate road accidents in Burichang and Debidwar upazilas on Friday, police said.In Burichang, two motorcyclists were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Nazira Bazar area of the upazila on Friday.The deceased were identified as Morshed Alam, son of Khorshed Alam of Burichang upazila and Anand, son of Latif Miah of the same area.The accident occurred around 1.15 pm as their motorcycle collided with an unidentified long-haul vehicle heading towards Chattogram. Both of them fell off the bike and died on the spot, said police sources.Mainamati Highway Police have recovered the bodies and seized the motorcycle, said the sources.In Debidwar, an auto-rickshaw driver was killed after his vehicle collided with a truck at Kalikapur area of Jafarganj in Debidwar upazila on Friday afternoon.The deceased was identified as Alamgir, a resident of Koralpara in Fatehabad union of Debidwar upazila.

The driver of the autorickshaw was stuck under the wheel of the truck. When I went the spot, the man was alive then. Despite many attempts, I could not get out from under the wheels. He died shortly afterwards. Later I called the fire service".However, the truck driver managed to flee the scene" he said.After completion of due legal process, the body will be handed over to the family, the OC added.
2 killed in Cumilla road accident

Girl’s family outcast over rumours in Moulvibazar
A family in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura upazila has been declared outcast by a local mosque committee for sending a daughter for education in the United States.
Nurunnahar Chowdhury Jharna, daughter of ostracised Abdul Hai Chowdhury, went to the USA for higher studies on December 26. Rumours such as she married a Hindu boy spread in the area.

Abdul Hai, being humiliated and shunned along with other members of family, lodged a written complaint with the Kulaura upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) on Monday afternoon.
According to the complaint copy, he daughter worked with a human rights organization. After she reached USA, some people including the chairman of the organization received her. As she posted those photos on Facebook, people in the area spread falae information about her.
It was learnt that, Bhatara Bazar Jame Mosjid arbitration committee during a meeting on Friday ostracized Jhorna’s family. The committee president Shamsul Islam Makhan and general secretary Amin Mia announced the decision in presence of the locals at the mosque.
Kulaura upazila administration held a meeting at Bhatera UP office on Tuesday night. The members of the local arbitration committee were warned at the meeting.

UP chairman Syed AKM Nazrul Islam said he warned those who have been spreading propaganda about Jharna.
Krilaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) ATM Farhad Chowdhury said, after knowing the matter, "I have warned the president and secretary of the mosque arbitration committee. I have also instructed the OC and UP chairman to ensure the safety of Jharna's family."
Woman who sold newborn to foot hospital bills, gets him back
A single mother in Chandpur who was forced to sell her baby immediately after giving birth to foot the hospital bills, got back her child Thursday night, all thanks to the local administration.
Tamanna Begum, 28, from Hanir Par village in Matlab Uttar upazila, underwent a C-section to deliver her baby Wednesday. But she had to sell the newborn boy to pay Tk 40,000 for the delivery at a private hospital.
Tamanna’s husband has been missing for a long time, and her neighbours admitted her to the hospital after her labor pain started.
"Soon after my admission, I gave birth to my son but no one sadly came forward to foot the medical bills. A man proposed to me that I could sell my baby to pay the bills and I complied," she said.

As the news spread across the locality, on Thursday, additional commissioner (land) Mohammad Hedayetullah and local police conducted a joint drive to return the child to her mother.
In fact, they recovered the baby from a woman named Shimla Aktar in Shatnal union of the upazila. After interrogation, they found out that both the parties had mutually brokered the deal.
Later, the administration handed over the baby to Tamanna by making both of them sign a bond.

Gazi Shariful Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) who supervised the drive, said, “We are glad that we could return the baby to his mother with spontaneous support of the locals.”
UNO Shariful personally gave Tk 5,000 to Tamanna as assistance.
2 sisters burnt as building catches fire in Ctg
Two women suffered burn injuries as a fire broke out in a flat at Rahattarpul under Bakalia police station in the port city on Thursday.
The victims are Sabrina Khaled,23 and sister Samia Khaled,18, daughters of Abdullah Khaled.
Senior station officer of Chandanpura Fire Service Md Shahidul Islam said the fire started on the fifth floor of the building around 11:15 am.

Local people had doused the fire before the firefighters reached the spot, he said.
The injured women were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The fire might have originated from gas stove, said Shahidul Islam adding that three doors and windows of the flat and adjoining flats were damaged following an explosion after the fire incident.

Juba Dal leader killed in Sirajganj
A union unit leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal was shot dead allegedly by some assailants in Sadar upazila of Sirajganj on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Ali Akbar, 40, son of late Mojibur Rahman of Hatsartia village of the upazila.

Md Siddique Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Belkuchi circle, said the assailants shot Akbar Ali at Randhunibari Bazaar under Soydabad union around 8.15pm.
"He died on the way to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital," the ASP said, adding that four bottles of liquor and a bag were found near the crime scene.
The motive behind the killing will be clear only after an investigation, the ASP added.
2 killed in Gazipur road crash
Two people including a child were killed as a minibus hit a three-wheeler on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as passengers of the three-wheeler Marufa Begum, 54, wife of Gauchh Miah, a resident of Kadda Nandun area and Md Limon, 12, son of Nur Alam of the same area and a 6th grader at Medha Bikash Kindergarten.

Basan police station SI Matiuzzaman said when the three-wheeler was going to Chandna-Chourasta area from Konabari area a minibus of Taqwa Paribahan lost control and hit it from behind on Dhaka-Tangail highway leaving Limon dead on the spot.
Seriously injured Marufa was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead, he said.
The minibus driver managed to escape with the bus, he added.
BBF distributes winter clothes in Jhalokathi
The official partner of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Better Bangladesh Foundation (BBF), has recently distributed winter clothes among the cold-stricken people of Nachalmahal of Nalchity in Jhalokathi district.
The founding chairman of BBF Prof. Rotarinl Masud A Khan presided over the programme held on Friday afternoon. Nalchity Upazila Chairman Md. Siddiqur Rahman was present as the chief guest.

Caught on video for thrashing thief, grocer held in Chuadanga
A shopkeeper in Chuadanga was caught on video thrashing an alleged thief, prompting the police to arrest him on Tuesday night.
Police said that Sheikh Amanullah, the owner of ‘Sheikh Traders’, was arrested after an online video of him brutally beating up a 22-year-old man at the busy Hafiz intersection in Alamdanga went viral on social media.
"We placed him under arrest around 11 pm for further interrogation," said Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Alamdanga police station.
The youth, identified as Saddam Hossain, cops said, stole some food items from a vehicle parked outside Amanullah's grocery store for unloading goods on Tuesday afternoon.
After he was caught by locals following a brief chase, Amanullah tied Saddam up with a bamboo pole and beat him up with a plastic pipe mercilessly. A passerby shot the video and uploaded it on a social media platform.
Two students die in Sherpur road crash
A picnic trip turned into a tragedy for 15 school students as two of them died and the remaining sustained injuries on their way back when a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a roadside ditch in Sherpur on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Saidul Islam, son of Selim Mia, and Abu Taleb, son of Ismail Hossain of the upazila's Purbakharia Kajirchar area. The injured are being treated at hospitals.
The accident occurred near the Kalakanda-Diarchar bridge in Sribordi upazila. "The students had hired a vehicle to go to the picnic spot in Jhenaigati upazila. While returning, they had hired another vehicle that veered off the road and fell into the ditch around 11.30pm," Abul Hashem, OC of Sribordi Police Station, said.

The accident left the 15 students injured, six of them critically. Two of them were declared dead on arrival at Sribordi Upazila Health Complex, while the four others had been shifted to Sherpur District Hospital in the wake of their worsening medical condition, the officer said.
"Efforts are on to arrest the driver of the ill-fated vehicle," he added.
