70-year old woman dies in fire in Chandpur
A 70-year old woman died on Thursday night in a fire that broke out in her house at Paschim Santoshpur village in Chandpur.
The deceased was identified as Bely Begum, daughter of Lony Mia in Faridganj upazila.

Her neighbour Jannat Aktar said hearing her cry for help at 9 pm they tried to control the fire but couldn’t rescue her alive as the door was locked from inside.
The neighbours suspect the fire started from the cooking gas cylinder blast.
Five fire fighters managed to douse the blaze later, said Ohidul Islam, station officer of Algi Fire Fire Service.
The exact cause of the fire could not be known immediately, he said.

Md Shahid Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Farid Ganj police station said the woman’s charred body was recovered.
Legal procedure is underway in this regard, he said.
Worker dies in Ctg gas cylinder blast
A 30-year-old worker was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at a steel factory in Bashbaria area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram Thursday noon.
The deceased was identified as Ranjit Das, son of Shridam Das of Kumira Ghatghar area of the upazila.
Police said the gas cylinder went off when Ranjit was cutting scrap iron inside the rod factory of GPH Steel Ltd around 12pm, leaving Ranjit dead on spot.
The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) morgue, said Ashraful Karim, assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) of Sitakunda circle.
Fisherman goes missing as boat sinks in Arial Khan
A fisherman went missing in the Arial Khan River in Babuganj upazila of Barishal on Thursday after a boat sank in the river being hit by a launch.
The missing man was identified as Masum Khan, 30, son of Ismail Khan from the area.
Delwar Hossain, 25, who sustained injuries, was admitted in a local hospital rescued by the locals.

A diving team of the Fire Service and Civil Defence started a search operation from 9 am.
According to witnesses, Masum and Delwar went to catch fish in the river Thursday night.
When they were sleeping tying up the boat with paddla Poysharhat-bound launch hit the boat and it sank around 3am at Gazipur of Chandpasha union in the upazila, said Md Khorshed Alam, station officer of Barishal Naval Fire Service Station.
He said they are trying to rescue the missing fisherman.
Pre-poll violence leaves 3 injured in Ctg
At least three people sustained injuries on Thursday in a clash between supporters of two chairman candidates of Khagaria Union Parishad election in Satkania upazila of Chattogram.
The clash broke out between the supporters of Aeami League nominated candidate Aktar Hossain and independent candidate Jashim Uddin around 12:30 pm at Jorarkul area, said Md Shibli Noman, Additional Superintendent of Police in Satkania circle.

“Already a team of police has been sent to the area. The number of injured may increase,” he said.
On Wednesday 18 chairman candidates of Khagaria UP polls in Satkania upazila were expelled from South District AL for going against the party’s decision.

55-yr-old beaten to death in Meherpur
A 55-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by some people in the Amjhupi Purbapara area of the district's Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Abul Bashar Molla, a resident of the Amjhupi area.
Shah Dara Khan, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Abdul's son Salahuddin had constructed a speed-breaker in front of his grocery shop.

On Wednesday, Salauddin had an altercation with the driver and the salesman of Speed Energy Drink company as their vehicle got stuck while negotiating the speed-breaker.
At one stage, the workers of Meherpur Palli Bidyut Samity also joined them and beat Salauddin up mercilessly. When Abul tried to save his son, he was also beaten up.
A critically injured Abul died on the way to hospital, the OC said.
Bogura road crash leaves 5 dead
Five people were killed and another was injured as a bus crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Ranirhat intersection in Sherpur upazila of Bogura on Wednesday.
However, the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Police said the accident occurred around 5pm when the Rangpur-bound Hanif Paribahan bus hit the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, leaving four passengers of the auto-rickshaw and its driver dead on spot.
Another passenger of the auto-rickshaw was rushed to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital (SZMCH) in critical condition, said Aminul Islam, duty officer of Sherpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Control Room.

The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue, the official added.
Police seized the bus but the driver and his helper managed to escape the scene, he added.
4 die as train hits auto-rickshaw in Nilphamari
Four women were killed and four others injured when a train hit an auto-rickshaw carrying them at an unauthorised level crossing in the district's Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Shefali Begum, 35, wife of Ashraf Ali, Chaya Banu, 26, wife of Belal Hossain, Ruma Akter, 25, wife of Mosharraf Hossain and Minara Akter, 22, wife of Arman Hossain. They all were workers of Uttara EPZ.
The victims were residents of Daroani Dhanipara village in Sadar upazila.

Abdur Rahman Biswas, officer-in-charge of Saidpur Railway police station, said the Chilahati-bound Simanta Express from Khulna crashed into the battery-run three wheeler in Daroani area around 7 am, leaving one dead on the spot and seven others injured.
The injured were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared two of them dead.
The hospital authorities later referred three of the injured people to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, and another victim died on the way to the medical facility.
Police suspected that the accident occurred due to poor visibility caused by fog while crossing the unauthorised level-crossing.
Train accidents in Bangladesh
Train accidents are common in Bangladesh, many at unmanned level crossings and some due to the poor condition of tracks.

According to data provided by the Bangladesh Railway, in August 2019, only 466 gates of its 1,412 level crossings have gatemen.
In November 2019, a deadly collision occurred between Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita Express and Chattogram-bound Udayan Express on the Dhaka-Chattogram route near the Mandbagh railway station in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The train crash had left at least 16 people dead and over 100 others injured.
At least 113 people, including 26 women and 11 children, were killed in railway accidents between January 1 and June 30 last year, according to a report, jointly prepared by the Green Club of Bangladesh (GCB) and the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways.
25-yr-old fisherman dies in clash in Bhola
A 25-year-old fisherman was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two groups of fishermen over netting fish in the Meghna river in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Asgar Ali, son of Khorshed of the upazila.

Maksudur Rahman Murad, officer-in-charge of Lalmohan Police Station, said a group of fishermen, led by Matin Majhi, went to the eastern side of the Meghna river under Dhaligournagar union for netting fish.
Minutes later, the other group of fishermen, led by Nayan Majhi, appeared in the same area for catching fish, triggering an altercation in the afternoon.

Later, both the groups attacked each other, leaving at least six people injured.
The injured were taken to Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex, where Asgar died of his injuries. "Efforts are on to nab the attackers,” said the OC.
Miscreants fell 52 mango trees of a Madrasha in Magura
Miscreants have chopped 52 mango trees at the premises of Baliadanga Hafezia and Orphanage Madrasha at Baliadanga village in Sadar upazila of the district, the head of the institution said on Tuesday.
Firoz Ahmed, super of Baliadanga Hafezia and Madrasha, said he noticed the trees, some of them in flowers, felled to the ground as he, along with Madrasha students, came out of a mosque after saying fazr prayer.
The miscreants felled the trees sometime after midnight under the cover of darkness when staff and students of the madrasha were asleep, he said.

He demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in the tree felling.
Manjurul Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said “We have got a written complaint about tree felling and legal steps will be taken after investigation.”
Woman’s body recovered from river in Chuadanga
Police have recovered the decomposed body of a woman from Mathabhanga river in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Poppy Khatun, 26, wife of Tuhin of Nagarboalia village in Bhangbaria union of Alamdanga upazila and daughter of Bhola Sheikh of Islampara in Belgachi village of the same upazila.
The body was recovered from Mathabhanga river at Karigarpara in Bhangbaria village of the upazila on Monday (January 24) afternoon.
According to police, some women from the area found the body when they went down to bathe in the Mathabhanga river on Monday afternoon and informed the police.
Deceased’s father Bhola Sheikh said six days ago, her in-laws, including her husband Tuhin informed him that Poppy had escaped with a man.
But he suspects that her husband has killed Poppy as she was often beaten and tortured there.
Alamdanga police inspector Tuhinuzzaman Khan said police had recovered the body six days after she went missing. Initially, it was thought that she had been murdered.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he said.
