2 killed in Fatullah road accident
Two passengers of a battery-run auto-rickshaw were killed when it collided with a covered van on the old Dhaka-Narayanganj highway adjacent to Masdair Amena Garments of Fatullah.
The deceased have been identified as Afasar Uddin, 56 and Abbas Uddin, 48.
Rakibuzzaman, officer-in-charge, Fatullah Model Police Station confirmed the news to UNB.

“The locals rushed the injured to Narayanganj General Hospital where the duty doctor declared two of them dead, “ he said. “Locals held the driver of the covered van and handed him over to police.”
At least 468 people were killed and 507 others injured in 432 road accidents across the country in April amid the nationwide lockdown, according to a report of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.

Besides, six more people were killed in eight accidents on rail tracks, 38 people were killed and nine others injured in 14 accidents on river routes while two others went missing during the month.
3 missing children rescued from Sylhet's Jaflong
Three minor boys, who went missing from Sylhet's Dakshin Surma two days ago, were rescued from the district's Gowainghat Saturday.
Some locals handed them over to police after finding them at Jaflong Zero Point, said Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monirul Islam.
The children are 13-year-old twin brothers Hassan and Hossain, and Apu, 10, from Dakshin Surma's village Ahmedpur.

All three are madrasa students. Hassan and Hossain's cousin Salah Uddin said the trio left the house around 6am Thursday and did not return.
After failing to trace them, he filed a general diary with Dakshin Surma police station the same day.

Khulna set to go under 7-day strict lockdown from June 22
A weeklong strict lockdown has been announced in Khulna district from June 22, aiming to stem the spread of Coronavirus.
The decision was taken on Saturday considering the recent alarming surge in Covid infections and higher death rates in the district.
Deputy Commissioner of the district Md. Helal Hossain announced the decision at a meeting of the Coronavirus prevention committee.
According to the announcement, during the lockdown public transport movement, except that of vehicles providing emergency services, will remain restricted.
Until Monday, June 21 the district will follow the previously announced restrictions, said the DC.
Khulna General Hospital will run as a Covid-19 dedicated hospital with 70 beds from tomorrow, added DC Helal Hossain.
A public notice will soon be issued regarding the lockdown, he added.
Besides, authorities have announced a 7-day lockdown in Chuadanga Sadar municipality and adjoining Alukadia Union area from Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner Nazrul Islam Sarkar made the announcement on Saturday after a meeting of District Corona Prevention Committee.
Covid situation going from bad to worse
Covid-19 in Bangladesh claimed the lives of 67 people in 24 hours until Saturday morning, the highest daily deaths in 48 days.
The country last recorded 69 deaths on May 2 this year.
Meanwhile, 3,057 new infections were detected after testing 16,964 samples, said a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHs).
With these, the country's death toll rose to 13,466 while the caseload to 848,02
However, the positivity rate slightly fell to 18.02% from Friday’s 18.59% while the death rate remained static at 1.59%, shows the DGHS handout.
Gowainghat triple muder: Husband arrested
Police have arrested Hifzur Rahman in connection to murder of his wife and two children in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet.
Police showed Hafizur, who was undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, arrested on Saturday noon.
Superintendent of Police Farid Uddin Ahmed said Hifzur will be discharged from the hospital on Sunday and then will be produced to a court .
Police will seek remand for him for investigating the case, he said.
On Wednesday, police recovered the bodies of Hafizur’s wife Alima Begum (30), two children Mizan (10), and Tanisha (3), from their house in Binnakandi.
Injured Hifuzar was rescued from the house and them admitted to Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Alima Begum's father Ayub Ali filed a murder case with Goanghat police station without mentioning name of any accused.
A senior police official involved in the investigation said on condition of anonymity that Hifzur Rahman was behaving suspiciously from the beginning.
Superintendent of police Farid Uddin told reporters that the police are investigating the murder incident focusing two issues – Hifzur’s property related enmity with his uncle and Hifzur’s dispute with his wife regarding his sister-in-law.
A battle for breath in Khulna as Covid cases surge
A sudden surge in Covid cases in Khulna district has left many corona patients gasping for breath due to an apparent shortage of medical oxygen in some hospitals.
The demand for the life-saving gas has, in fact, doubled in the district in the past one month, UNB has learnt.
At Khulna Dedicated Covid Hospital, for instance, the number of patients is rising by the day. But the hospital is being forced to turn many of them away due to lack of vacant oxygen and ICU beds. The worst hit are the elderly patients.
Sajeeb Raihan, in-charge of Khulna Depot Spectra Oxygen Limited (SOL), said, “The demand for the live-saving gas has doubled as compared to May."
"Earlier the demand for small cylinders (1.36 cubic metres) was 200 daily, but now it has surged to 400 a day. Similarly, the demand for large cylinders (6.8 cubic metres) has risen to 400 daily from last month's figure of 200-259 daily," he said.
Already liquid oxygen tanks have been installed at Khulna Medical College and Hospital, Sadar Hospital and Gopalganj Hospital, he said.

According to Sajeeb, many private hospitals are also witnessing a surge in demand for medical oxygen. "Some hospitals have started sourcing oxygen from private firms directly."
Covid-19 situation in Khulna division
Eight Covid-19 patients died in Khulna division in 24 hours on Friday, a top health official said. Besides, some 1,033 people have been found infected with the virus during the same period.

Rasheda Sultana, director (Health) of Khulna Division, said of the total deaths, two people died in Khulna, two each in Jashore and Narail districts, and one each in Meherpur and Satkhira districts.
On Thursday, 18 people died of Covid-19 while 765 new cases were registered in the division.
In Khulna division, the first case of Covid-19 was detected in Chuadanga on March 19, 2020.

So far, 43,644 people have been infected with the virus in 10 districts of the division, and the death toll has reached 775. A total of 33,944 people have recovered from the virus to date.
3 killed in Bogura road crash
A couple and their new born granddaughter were killed and three others injured when a bus collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Ashraf Ali, 50, his wife Parul Khatun, 45, and their one-and-half-months old granddaughter Rezwan.

The accident occurred at Hathibanddha of Shibganj Upazila around 9 am when the Rangpur-bound bus of ‘Ahsan Paribahan’ from Dhaka had a head-on collision with the Bagura-bound auto-rickshaw.
The three were killed on the spot, said sub-inspector of Shibganj Police Station Mizan.
The three injured were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital, he said.
Fatal road accidents are common in Bangladesh.

Four areas of Gopalganj restricted for a week
To prevent the spread of coronavirus, the upazila administration has imposed restrictions in two municipalities and two unions of Gopalganj.
Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shahida Sultana issued a notice to this effect on Thursday afternoon.
The areas mentioned in notice were Gopalganj, Muksudpur municipality, Latifpur and Kashiani union.
Gopalganj Additional District Magistrate Shafiqul Islam said the restrictions would be implemented from June 18-24.
During this time all types of businesses-organizations, shops, shopping malls, kitchen markets and grocery stores in these areas were instructed to remain open from 8 am to 3 pm.
Restaurants could remain open until 10 pm, but people could only take away food parcels.
Hawkers were prohibited to set up stores on sidewalks and footpaths.
In addition, all types of tourist centers, resorts, community centers and entertainment centers would remain closed.
Public gatherings, such social events, political and religious ceremonies were restricted too.
However, transports were permitted to run following health guidelines.
Gopalganj Civil Surgeon Dr. Sujat Ahmed said due to the increase in Covid-19 infection rate, the district administration on Thursday was requested to impose restrictions in the risky areas. Accordingly, restrictions in those areas were imposed from Friday.
7 killed, 22 injured in three road accidents in Chattogram, Rangamati
At least seven people, including women and children, have been killed in three separate road accidents in Chattogram and Rangamati on Friday. About 22 more people were injured in these accidents.
The accidents occurred in EPZ Steel Mills Bazar and Shikalbaha area of Karnafuli police station on Friday.
According to police, three people, including a woman and a child, were killed when a bus overturned at Steel Mills Bazar area under EPZ police station around 12 pm.
Two of the deceased were Nur Begum, 43, and her niece, 11, who were killed on spot. Another died on the way to the hospital after being rescued by the police.

Witnesses said a speeding bus hit a rickshaw at Sailo Road and crushed the pedestrians, losing its control while escaping at Friday noon.
EPZ police officer-in-charge Utpal Barua said the mob detained the driver and helper of the bus and handed them over to the police. The bus was also seized.
Meanwhile, three people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Shikalbaha Chaumuhoni area of Karnafuli upazila. However, the identities of the injured were not immediately known.
Police TI Anwar Azim said two buses collided while overtaking a CNG, injuring several passengers of the two buses. Two of them died.

All the injured have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
SI Zahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH police outpost, said at least 22 to 25 people were rushed to the hospital. They are undergoing treatment in different wards.
In Rangamati, a ninth-grader schoolgirl was killed in a head-on collision between a motorbike and a Jeep at Bangalhaliya's Shafipur area of Rajasthali-Chandraghona highway on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Opruiching Marma, 18, daughter of Mongbaching Marma of Farua union in Bilachhari upazila. She is a ninth-grader student of Chitmaram High School.

Two people including a motorcyclist were injured in the accident.
Md Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandraghona Police Station, said legal action is being taken in this case. Police are searching for the jeep.
4 killed in Cumilla road crash
Four people were killed in two separate road crashes in Cumilla.
Three passengers of a private car were killed and another injured when a bus hit the car on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Comilla's Sadar Dakshin upazila's Suagazi area.
The deceased were identified as Fakhrul Alam Dulal, 52, of Hamandi area of Laxmiipur Sadar, Miraj Hossain (18) son Mubarak Hossain of capital’s Khilgaon Taltola and private car driver Belal Hossain (35), son of Abdul Majid of Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur.

Officer-in-charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station Anisur Rahman said the private car was on its way to Chattogram. It was hit by a Dhaka-bound Shyamoli Paribahan while it was taking a U-turn in front of Hotel Kanan in Suagazi area around 3 am on Thursday. Two passengers died on the spot and the driver died on the way to Dhaka for treatment, he added.
The other incident occurred at Dighirpara of Harisardar Bazar in Cumilla's Chauddagram upazila on Friday morning when a three wheeler was hit by a lorry. A school girl killed and three others were injured in it.
The deceased was identified as Lamia Akhter (8), daughter of Khalilur Rahman of Natapara area under Akter upazila and a second grade student at Natapara Government Primary School.

Bechu Mia, the autorickshaw driver said Lamia was hurt on the head as the lorry hit the autorickshaw.
She was rushed to Comilla Medical College from where she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as her condition deteriorated.
She died on the way to DMCH, Bechu Mia futher said.
12 more die of Covid at Rajshahi hospital
Twelve more people have died of Covid-19 at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) in the past 24 hours, officials said Friday.

Among them, six were confirmed Covid cases, while the remaining patients showed symptoms of the virus, hospital director Brigadier General Shamim Yeazdani said.
Of the deceased, five were from Rajshahi district, two from Chapainawabganj, two from Natore and three belonged to Naogaon district.

A total of 183 people have died of Covid-19 at RMCH in the last 18 days.
Shamim also said that some 41 people have been admitted to the corona unit of the hospital in the past 24 hours. "The figure was somewhat less than that of Thursday's, but the infection rate in Rajshahi rose to 43.87 percent," he said.

On Thursday, 561 samples were tested at RMCH of which 220 emerged positive.
