Woman commits suicide three days into marriage in Dhaka's Banasree
A newlywed woman is understood to have committed suicide by hanging herself in her new home in the capital's Banasree residential area on Friday night.
Woman, son burnt in Narayanganj fire
Afiya Murshida Chaity Alam, hailing from Ghatail upazila of Tangail, got married to Md Tawhid just three days earlier, according to her own younger brother. She was 37.
The brother, Omar Faruk, said Tawhid and Chaity got married with the consent of their families, just last week, but problems did arise immediately afterwards.
Chaity had then moved in with her husband, into a flat on the fourth floor of an apartment block in Banasree's E-block, Faruk said.

Tawhid’s family members, particularly his mother and sister, had been misbehaving with Chaity since the marriage, he alleged.
Her in-laws' 'mental torture' might have led Chaity to commit suicide, the brother claimed.
On Friday night, Tawhid phoned Faruk saying that Chaity had locked herself in a room and was not receiving calls.
Upon breaking the door open, Chaity was found hanging from the ceiling fan by a scarf, the brother said.

She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but physicians could only declare her dead around 1:45am (early Saturday), said the hospital’s police outpost in-charge Md Bachhu Miah.
Trader crushed under train in Brahmanbaria
A cloth trader was crushed under the wheels of a train in Brahmanbaria’s Shimrail Kandi area on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Md Kabir Alam (32), a resident of Nasirnagar upazila’s Gujiakhail village.

Sub-inspector Md Saiful Islam of Brahmanbaria Railway Police Station outpost said the body was sent to the Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue.
The body will be handed over to the family after an autopsy, he said.

A woman and her son sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out in their house from gas leakage at the Nitaiganj Mollapara area in Narayanganj’s Sadar upazila on Saturday.

The injured were identified as Sima Begum (50) and her son Roman (25).
According to family sources, the fire broke out in the house around 6:00 am when Sima tried to light the stove in the kitchen of the house, leaving them injured.

Madrasha student killed in Ctg road accident
A 6-year-old madrasha student was killed and another injured as a pickup van hit an auto-rickshaw carrying them at South Maghadia Ghona in Mirsharai upazila of Chattogram on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Arifa, daughter of Mohammad Imam Hossain and a student of local Khearhat Nooria Siddiqia Dakhil Madrasha while the injured was Reena Akter Ankhi, a student of first-grade in the same madrasha.

According to locals, the pickup van hit the auto-rickshaw when they were going to the madrasha around 9 am, leaving Arifa dead on the spot.
Maulana Mohammad Mofizur Rahman, principal of Khairhat Nuria Siddiqia Dakhil Madrasa, said Arifa died on the spot and injured Rina Akter Ankhi was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

30 injured in earthquake panic rush in Cumilla, Chandpur
At least 30 people including 17 workers of a garment factory were injured while rushing out of buildings in Cumilla and Chandpur districts during an earthquake that jolted different parts of the country on Saturday morning.
In Cumilla, at least 20 people including 17 workers of a garment factory were injured in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla district when the earthquake hit the country.

Trinath Saha, officer-in-charge of Chauddagram Police Station, said the seventeen workers of a garment factory, located in Mirswani area, were injured.
Meanwhile, three more people including a student of a college was also injured while coming out of buildings in separate places.
Most of the victims were given first aid while some were admitted to local hospitals.
In Chandpur, ten people were injured while coming out from a multistoried building during the earthquake in the district town in the morning.
However, all of them were slightly injured, said sources at Chandpur District Hospital.

Earlier, in the day, an earthquake jolted Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh.
The earthquake, measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale, was felt at 9:35 am which lasted for a few seconds, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
CNG-truck collision leaves mother, daughter dead in Noakhali
A mother and her daughter were killed in a head-on collision between a CNG autorickshaw and a truck in Noakhali's Subarnachar upazila on Friday noon.
Two people including the CNG driver sustained injuries in the accident.

71-yr-old man’s throat-slit body recovered in Joypurhat
The throat-slit body of a 71-year-old man was recovered from his house at Sikta village in Joypurhat’s Kalai upazila on Friday.
The deceased was Syed Ali Akhand.
Police detained the man’s two sons and their wives for interrogation, said Wasim Al Bari, officer-in-charge of Kalai Police Station.
Quoting locals, he said, Syed Ali used to live in his house alone after his wife’s death. He went to sleep Thursday night after dinner. Family members found his throat-slit dead body on his bed this morning.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Joypurhat General Hospital morgue for autopsy, added the OC.
AL-nominated candidate physically harasses 2 journalists in Ctg
Two journalists were physically harassed allegedly by Awami League-nominated candidate Mustafizur Rahman for Chattogram-16 constituency and his followers when he was asked about violation of electoral code of conduct during submission of nomination papers at Chattogram Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday.
The accused also vandalised cameras and other equipment during the attack.
The injured Rakib Uddin and Pranabesh Chakrabortya are reporters of private independent and Ekattor TV stations.
Witnesses said candidate Mustafizur accompanied by a huge convoy came to the DC office to submit the nomination papers in the morning.
After submitting, the AL-backed candidate was briefing about his candidature in front of the DC office.
Journalist Rakib said he questioned the candidate about the violation of the electoral code of conduct as he earlier came at the DC office with a huge convoy.
Enraged by this, the AL candidate rushed to him and beat him in front of all, he said, alleging that Mustafizur also assaulted Pranabesh when he tried to save him.
His followers also snatched away cameras, microphones and other equipment of the televisions and vandalised them, he said.
Though journalists verbally complained against the candidate to DC Abul Bashar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman who assured them of taking actions scrutinising CCTV footage.
The DC asked the victims to submit the complaints in writing while the candidate was served a show cause notice by the Election Search Committee formed by Election Commission.
The search committee chairman and also joint district and sessions judge court judge Abu Saleh Mohammad Noman will take action in this regard, the DC and also the returning officer said.
Condemning the incident, former president and general secretary of Chattogram Union of Journalists Reaz Haider Chowdhury demanded exemplary punishment against the candidate who earlier threatened journalists.
The accused candidate could not be reached over mobile phone for comments despite repeated attempts.
As per the electoral code of conduct, a candidate can’t take more than five supporters to collect and submit nomination papers.
3 parked buses torched in Cumilla
Miscreants set three stationary buses on fire on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Kotbari Biswa Road in Cumilla district early Thursday ahead of BNP’s daylong hartal.
Alamgir Hossain Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakkhin Police Station, said three buses of ‘Tisha Paribahan’ were kept on the highway in front of Irish Hill Restaurant.

Bus set on fire in Gazipur
Miscreants set a bus on fire at Jirani bazar in Gazipur city on Thursday during the daylong hartal called by BNP.Asaduzzaman, assistant commissioner of Gazipur police, said miscreants intercepted a Dhaka-bound bus on Kaliakoir-Nabinagar road at 9:30 am and set it on fire.No casualty was reported. There were a few passengers on the bus.
