Narayanganj, Sept 12 (UNB) – A fire that broke out in a tyre factory at Fatulla in the city gutted its valuables on Wednesday.
The fire broke out at the warehouse of Asian Cox tyre factory in the area around 8:30 am and burned down huge quantity of chemicals, tyres and machineries, said Mamun Mahmud, Assistant Director of Dhaka Fire Service and Civil Defense.
Nine firefighting units from Dhaka and Narayanganj brought the blaze under control after about three hours of frantic efforts, he added.
Zafor Iqbal, manager of the factory, said the fire might have originated from electric short circuit at the warehouse where huge quantity of chemicals were kept.
Officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station Shah Md Manjur Quader said additional police forces have been deployed in the area .
Sunamganj, Sept 12 (UNB) – At least two people were killed in lightning strikes in separate places here on Wednesday.
Hridoy Das, 14, son of Lulu Das of Joynagar village in Chhatak upazila, died on the spot being hit by a thunderbolt while netting fish in a haor in the village around 12:05 pm.
Another boy, Ranjan Das, was also injured in the incident, locals said.
In another incident, boatman Mamun Mia of Pirojpur district died on his boat when a thunderbolt struck him on the Shurma river, said Atiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.
Cox’s Bazar, Sept 12 (UNB) – Three people were killed and four others injured when a covered van hit a human hauler on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway near Inani Resort in Chakaria upazila on Wednesday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Nure Alam, in-charge of Siringa Highway police camp, said the accident took place around 11:30 am when a covered van of ‘Ranbow Paribahan’ hit a human hauler, leaving three dead on the spot and four others injured.
The injured were taken to Sadar Hospital, he added.
Chattogram, Sept 12 (UNB) – At least two people were killed while another one was injured in a head-on collision between two covered vans on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Mirsarai upazila early Wednesday.
One of the deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain, 40, a driver of a covered van while the identity of other could not be known yet.
Inspector Rabiul Azam Robin of Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defence said the accident took place around 3:30 am when two covered vans collided head-on, leaving two dead on the spot.
A man identified as Goutam was injured in the accident and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Chandpur, Sept 12 (UNB) – A madrasa student, who was reportedly abducted from Chattogram on September 5, was rescued from Biponibagh Bazar area in the district town on Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Jashedul Islam, 16, a student of Halishohor Al-Jamia Islamia Baitul Karim Madrasha in the port city and son of Joynal Abedin of Sandwip.
Quoting the victim, Sub-inspector Momin of Sadar Model Police Station said two people were following Jashedul while he was returning home from the madrasa on September 5 and kidnapped him after placing a handkerchief poured with chloroform on his mouth.
Later, the kidnappers took him to Chandpur district town and kept him confined in a room for six days.
Later on Tuesday, Jashedul managed to flee the spot and took shelter at a shop in the area around 11 pm.
On information, police rescued him and informed his parents.
However, police could not manage to arrest anyone in this connection yet, the SI added.
