Jashore, Sep 4 (UNB) - A madrassa student died while undergoing treatment at Jessore General Hospital after receiving a snakebite early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Tamil Hossain Hridoy, 14, a class nine student of Krishnapur Dakhil Madrassa and son of Moniruzzaman of Gopalpur village in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district.
Victim’s father Moniruzzaman said Hridoy was bitten by a venomous snake while he was sleeping in his house.
Later, he was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injures at about 10 am.
Chattogram, Sept 4 (UNB) – Customs officials recovered 13 gold bars, weighing 1.51 kg, from a cartoon at Shah Amanat International Airport on Tuesday.
Tipped off, a team of customs officials conducted a drive at a flight of US Bangla Airlines coming from Doha and recovered the gold bars from a cartoon, said Md Mahabubur Rahman, assistant commissioner of Customs Intelligence of the airport.
The market value of the seized gold bars is Tk 65 lakh, he added.
However, they could not arrest anyone in this connection.
Sylhet, Sep 4 (UNB) – Police in a drive detained a total of 16 local leaders and activists of BNP from Goalbazar union parishad chairman’s residence in Osmani Nagar upazila on Monday night.
Acting on a tip-off, police detained them while they were conducting a secret meeting around 10 pm, said Md Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station.
The arrestees are Osmani Nagar Upazila BNP ex-president Syed Motahir Ali, General Secretary and Dayamir UP Chairman STM Fakhar Uddin, Upazila Vice-chairman Gayas Mia, Goalbazar Union BNP President Syed Kawsar Ahmad, activists Sirajul Islam, Kayes Ahmed Chowdhury, Irshad Uddin Zillu, Abdul Mannan, Kamal Ahmed Parvez, Hadis Khan, Kamru Mia, Sarjan Mia, Sharif Ahmad Chowdhury, Abdu Kalam, Chhatra Dal joint conveners Rakib Ali and Atiqul Alam.
Faridpur, Sept 4 (UNB) - An Awami League activist was killed in a clash between two factions of the party over establishing supremacy in Saltha upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Sakhawat Hossain, 50.
Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Saltha Police Station, said that supporters of Atghar union parishad chairman Shahidul Islam Shohag, joint general secretary of Saltha unit AL and a UP member Wadud Matubbar, also general secretary of Gotti union AL locked into a clash in the afternoon over the previous enmity.
The clash left around 20 people injured, the OC said adding that the clash continued for several hours.
Among them, seven critically injured were admitted at Faridpur Medical College Hospital where Sakhawat, a supporter of Wadud group, succumbed to his injuries.
Additional police have been deployed to avoid any further untoward situation.
Dhaka, Sept 4 (UNB) –A contempt of court rule notice has been served to Vice-chancellor, Proctor and Treasurer of Dhaka University for not taking any steps to hold Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (DUCSU) elections despite High Court directives to hold it within six months.
The notice said Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin will be sued in a contempt of court case if they do not take steps to hold an election following HC directives within next seven days.
Advocate Manzil Murshid, lawyer of the petitioners, said the notice was issued on Tuesday.
Earlier on January 17, the HC asked the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold DUCSU elections.
A writ petition was filed by 25 students of DU in March 2012 seeking a court order to compel the authorities concerned to arrange the Ducsu election.
The last time DUCSU elections were held in 1990 leading to the fall of military dictator HM Ershad in that year.
