Chattogram, Sept 09 (UNB) – Three warehouses were gutted in a fire incident at Boro Quarter area in Pahartali of the port city on Sunday afternoon.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a cookeries warehouse around 1:00 pm and soon engulfed adjoining jute and tire chemical warehouses, said Jashim Uddin, sub-assistant director of Fire Service And Civil Defence (media).
Three firefighting units doused the fire after two hours of frantic effort, he added.
The estimated losses caused by the fire could not be ascertained yet.
Chandpur, Sept 9 (UNB) – The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) distributed four-hundred umbrellas among the students living in Raj Rajeswar, a char area on the west bank of Meghna river, on Sunday.
The umbrellas, depicting slogans against corruption and the ACC logo, were given after a function titled ‘Corruption Prevention and Role of Students’ held at Omar Ali High School premises with Deputy Commissioner Shaokat Usman on the chair.
UNO Kaniz Fatema, sadar upazila Education Officer Saiful Islam and school managing committee President Aziz Faruque, Raj Rajeswar Union Parishad Chairman Md Hazrat Ali, district unit president of Corruption Prevention Committee Kazi Hashem, among others, spoke on the occasion.
During the function, all took oath against corruption, early marriages and drugs.
Benapole, Sep 9 (UNB) – Police on Sunday arrested eight people in a case filed over carrying out attack, loot and vandalise the house of a religious minority member at Gilapol village in Sharsha Upazila in Jashore.
A gang of miscreants namely Milon Bahini demanded extortion from Solmon Das, son of Juran Das of Gilapol village, said Aynal Haque, chairman of Ulashi Union Parishad.
The gang members, carrying sharp weapons, attacked Solmon’s house on Saturday night and vandalized all of the furniture, beat up women members of the family and looted large amount of cash, gold jewelries and cell phones from there as he failed to provide the extortion money.
The members of Milon Bahini also threatened the family not to inform law enforcers regarding the attack.
Later on Sunday morning, a case was filed accusing 17 people with Sharsha Police Station, said M Moshiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Chattogram, Sept 9 (UNB) – A cement-laden lighter ship was capsized after being hit by another vessel in the Bay of Bengal near Sandwip Channel at Bhashan Char in Sandwip upazila on Sunday.
Mohammad Selim, director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BWTC), said the Dhaka-bound cement-laden ‘MV Sheikh Fardin’ ship sank in the Bay of Bengal after being hit by lighter vessel ‘MV Bashundhara-27’ in the morning.
However, 13 crews of the ship were rescued with the help of local people, he added.
Some 1500 tons of cement were sunk in the bay.
Faridpur, Sept 9 (UNB) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive on Sunday arrested the owner of 'Ganj-e-raj Paribahan' bus from the district town in connection with the death of one-year-old Akifa, who was hit by the bus in Kushtia on August 28.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-8 arrested bus-owner Jainal Abedin from his residence in Jhiltuli area in the morning, said Mohammad Raisuddin, commanding officer of Rab-8.
Akifa, a one-year-old daughter of Haruur Rashid, died of head injuries on August 30, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
She was critically injured after she fell from her mother Rina Khatun's lap when the two was hit by the bus in Kushtia on August 28.
They were first taken to General Hospital in the town from where Afifa was referred to the DMCH for better treatment.
Later on August 31, Akifa's father filed a case against three people, including the bus owner, with Kushtia Police Station.
The other two accused -- the driver of the bus and the driver's helper – went into hiding after the accident.
The video footage of the incident went viral on the social networking site Facebook, sparking an uproar among locals.
