Sylhet, Aug 29 (UNB) – Five members of a family suffered burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a house at Rahimpur village in Biswanath upazila early Wednesday.
The victims are Faruk Miah, 55, his wife Champa Begum, 45, their daughter Ripa Begum, 18, son Emad Miah, 14, Imran Miah 12.
Officer-in-charge of Biswanath Police Station M Shamsuddoha said the fire originated from a burning mosquito coil in the early hours.
The family members sustained burn injuries as they were sleep during the fire incident, he said.
The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Joypurhat, Aug 29 (UNB) – A physically-challenged widow has allegedly been raped repeatedly by a young man at Uttar Joydevpur village in Panchbibi upazila.
Police arrested the alleged rapist, Helal Hossain, 25, son of Abdus Sobhan of the village, on Wednesday while fleeing to Dhaka.
Officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station Farid Hossain said Helal, a married man, developed a love affair with the widow, 32, six months back.
Since then, he had been raping her with a promise to marry her, the OC said, adding that he refused to marry the victim once the matter came to light recently.
The victim’s father filed a case against Helal on Wednesday morning in this regard.
Later, police arrested him from Panchbibi bus stand at noon while fleeing to Dhaka, said Farid adding that he was sent to jail through a court.
Jashore, Aug 29 (UNB) – A newlywed woman was found hanged at her house in Nehalpur in Manirampur upazila on Wednesday morning.
Police recovered the hanging body of Labony Das, 20, wife of Paresh Das of the village, and sent it to hospital for autopsy.
Locals said the family of Labony, also a 2nd year student of Political Science at Manirampur College, fixed her marriage with a boy from Satkhira on August 10. However, she eloped with Paresh, a Master’s student of Jessore Govt MM College, on August 9 and married him.
Victim’s in-laws said she went to sleep along with her sister-in-law Chaina on Tuesday night as her husband was staying in the district town for appearing at the Master’s examination.
She was found hanged from the ceiling on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, victim’s mother Lipika Das alleged that in-laws killed her daughter and hanged to body to make it appear that she committed suicide.
In-charge of Nehalpur police camp sub-inspector Khairul Basar said they suspected that Laboy committed suicide.
Jhenaidah, Aug 29 (UNB) –A case has been filed against a local rice trader in the connection with seizure of 52 sacks of rice meant for distribution among the ultra-poor under the vulnerable group feeding (VGF) programme from Haripur village in Sadar upazila.
The accused is Azizul Islam, son of Kawsar Ali of the village.
Project implementation office assistant Jahid Hasan filed the case with Sadar Police Station on Wednesday.
A total of 52 sacks of rice meant for distribution among the ultra-poor under the VGF scheme were recovered from three ponds in Haripur village of the upazila on Tuesday.
Being informed by locals, a team of local administration recovered the rice from the ponds, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shammi Islam.
Azizul Islam went into hiding immediately after the incident, said Khurshid Alam, chairman of Maharazpur Union Parishad.
Legal action will be taken against those involved in the incident, said the UNO.
Pabna, Aug 28 (UNB) – A female journalist was hacked to death by a group of unidentified assailants in front of her home at Radhanagar Majumdarparha in the district town on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Suborna Akhter Nodi, 32, the Pabna district correspondent of private channel Ananda TV and the Daily Jagroto Bangla newspaper.
Goutam Kumar Biswas, additional superintendent of Pabna police, said responding to knocks, Nodi opened the door and came under the attack around 10pm. The assailants hacked her indiscriminately with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured.
Later, locals took her to Pabna General Hospital where the duty doctor declared her dead.
On information, police visited the spot but the mystery of the murder could not be known yet, the official added.
