Tangail, Aug 29 (UNB) – A tribunal here on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for violating a woman in 2010.
The convict Abdul Jalil, son of Idris Ali of Ghatail upazila, was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Jalil built physical relation with her promising to marry her on January 1, 2010. When the woman became pregnant, he refused to marry her.
Later, the victim filed a case with Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Meanwhile, the woman gave birth to a baby girl.
After examining records and witnesses, Judge Khaleda Yeasmin handed down the verdict and asked the convict to bear all the expenses of the girl.
Munshiganj, Aug 29 (UNB) - A madrasa teacher was killed in an attack allegedly by his cousin over a trifling matter at Azimpur in Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Awlad Hossain, 55, a teacher of Churain Anowarul Ulum Rahmania Madrasa.
Zillur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatimara Police Station, said Awlad had an altercation with his cousin Taijul over borrowed money worth Tk 80,000 in the night.
At one stage, Taijul hit Awlad with a hammer, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Chandpur, Aug 29 (UNB) - Two kids drowned in a water body while collecting water lilies in Royosree village of Shahrasti Upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Lamia Akter, 5, daughter of Shohag Mia and his granddaughter Samiya Akter, 5, of the same village.
The incident happened when the victims came to a water body near their house to collect water lily around noon, but they did not return home till the afternoon, said Selim Patwary, chairman of Royosree Urrat Union Parishad.
After a frantic search in and around, locals found their floating bodies in the evening, he added.
The bodies were taken to a local hospital where the duty doctor declared them dead.
Jhenaidah, Aug 29 (UNB) – Huge quantity of rice meant for distribution among the ultra-poor under the vulnerable group feeding (VGF) scheme were recovered from three ponds in Haripur village of Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
Being informed by locals, a team of local administration recovered the rice from the ponds, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shammi Islam.
However, it could not be immediately known who dropped the rice there, she added.
Locals suspected that rice trader Azizul Islam of the area might have involved in the incident, said Khurshid Alam, chairman of Maharazpur Union Parishad.
Azizul Islam went into hiding immediately after the incident, said Khurshid.
Legal action will be taken against those involved in the incident, said the UNO.
Chapainawabganj, Aug 29 (UNB) – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two people along with arms and ammunition from Satrashia village in Chouka Bordering area in Shibganj upazila early Wednesday.
The arrestees were identified as Shawkat Ali and Lokman Hossain, son of Sattar Biswas of the village.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-59 conducted a drive in the house of Sattar Biswas and arrested two brothers along with four firearms, four magazines, four bullets, ten petrol bomb and 10 jihadi books, said Lt. Col Rashed Ali, commanding officer of BGB-59 battalion.
