Two held with 1.7 lakh USD at Benapole check-post
Two India returnees have been detained at Benapole check-post after 170,000 US dollars was found in their possession, Customs officials said Friday.The detainees are Sagar Hossain, 40, son of Shah Alam of Kamalghat area of Munshiganj district and Jasim Dhali, 35, son of Amjad Hossain of Tongibeed village in the same district.Tipped off, a Customs team detained them as they were waiting in the port terminal area after completing the immigration procedure around 7pm, said Moniruzzaman Chowdhury, assistant director of Benapole Customs House.After checking their baggage, Customs officials seized 1.7 lakh US dollars and detained them, he added.A case was filed against the detainees with the Benapole Port Police. "They have also been handed over to the cops," the official said.
Nine held with drugs, liquor in Jashore
In three separate drives, members of law enforcement agencies detained nine people, including eight Indian nationals, over possessing contraband drugs and foreign liquor from different parts of Jashore on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) conducted a drive in the district’s Churipotti area and detained six people with 18 bottles of Indian liquor on Thursday noon.
According to Rab-6 Jashore Company Commander Lieutenant M Najiur Rahman, all six of the detainees are Indian nationals.
In another development, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive in the district’s Ashram Mor area and arrested two Indian nationals with 2,500 pieces of Tapentadol tablets, 40 bottles of local and nine bottles of Indian liquor on the same day.

Meanwhile, Jashore Kotwali Police informed that they arrested a local youth with 23 bottles of Phensedyl from the district’s Barandipara Dhaka Bridge area on Thursday night.
Three separate cases have been filed with Jashore’s Kotwali Police station in this regard. Later, the detainees were sent to jail following the court’s order.
Eight held over killing teenager in Cumilla
Police have arrested eight Dakhil examinees for killing a college student in front of an exam center in Cumilla on Thursday.
The victim has been identified as Md Siam, 17, son of Helal Uddin Sarker of Char Mohonpur village under Cumilla’s Titas upazila. He was a first year student of Munshiganj Technical College.
The arrestees are Sakib Hasan, 19, son Joy Mia, Nazmul Hasan, 19, son of Nazir Hasan, Jonayed Islam Shuvo, 17, Saimun Mia, 19, son of Shafiq Mia, Masum Billah Rony, 19, son of Awlad Hasan, Omar Faruk, 19, son of Nurul Haque, Junayed Ahmed Sourav, 19, son of Abul Kashem and Mukul Ahmed Rabi, 17, son of Md Helal.

According to police, accused Nazmul had a love affair with a cousin of Siam. An enmity was ensuing between the two as Siam was opposing the relationship and deterring Nazmul from visiting the area where the girl lived.
The killing occurred when Siam took his brother to Titas upazila’s Gazipur Azizia Senior Dakhil Madrassah for attending an exam on Thursday. Finding Siam alone, Nazmul and his accomplices swooped on him and at one point, hacked him to death with a knife.
“Siam’s father Helal filed a murder case accusing Nazmul and seven others on Thursday night, based on which the arrests were made. The eight accused have been sent to jail through the court on Friday,” said Sudhin Chandra Das, Officer In-charge (OC) of Titas Police Station.
Missing Khulna woman found dead in Mymensingh, family suspects
Rahima Begum, 52, of Khulna, who has been missing since August 27, has been found dead in Mymensingh, family members suspect.
“I suspect my mother's body has been found,” this is what Moriom Mannan, Rahima’s daughter, wrote in a Facebook post today.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Khulna's Daulatpur police station and Mymensingh police couldn’t confirm the matter.

PBI is investigating the case filed over the woman's disappearance.
Khulna Superintendent of Police, Syed Mushfiqur Rahman, said the investigating officer of the case spoke to Moriom.
Moriom told them that her mother's body was recovered from Phulpur area of Mymensingh.
Mymensingh Police said the body of a woman was recovered from Phulpur on September 10 and was buried, said the officer.

Police couldn’t identify the body recovered in Mymensingh, he said.
Moriom Mannan told the investigating officer she identified her mother's body by scrutinizing a photograph of the clothes the corpse was wearing.
Phulpur police station has collected the DNA samples of the recovered body.
The investigating officer asked Moriom to go to Phulpur police station on Saturday. There her DNA sample will be collected and matched with the DNA of the recovered body.

“If the DNA matches it can be confirmed,” SP Mushfiqur.
On August 27, Rahima Begum went missing after she had stepped out to fetch water, near her home in Banikpara area of Doulatpur upazila in Khulna around 10pm. Her children found her sandals, scarf and the pitcher she was carrying from the spot.
The family first filed a complaint with the police, based on which an FIR was lodged by the cops against some people.

On September 13, after Rahima remained missing for 17 days and police failed to find her, her younger daughter Aduri Akter appealed to the Khulna court to transfer the case to PBI, said Rahima’s elder daughter Moriom Mannan.
The same day the court ordered the police to hand over the case to PBI, but the cops are yet to comply with the order, she told UNB.
When asked, Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Doulatpur police station, said, “We have received the order and the case document will be handed over when PBI asks for it.”

So far, six people have been arrested in this case. They are Rahima’s second husband Belal Howladar, Mohiuddin, Palash, Jewel, Helal Sharif, and assistant engineer at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Golam Kibria.
As the case was investigated by PBI, a remand appeal made by the police to interrogate Rahima’s husband Belal remains pending for hearing, said the OC.
Rahima’s daughter Moriom, in a Facebook post, said that they have been putting up 'missing' posters in Khulna city in the hope they will get their mother back.

SAFF Women Champs: Grand reception awaits Sohagi & Swapna in Ranisankail
A grand reception awaits Bangladesh footballers Sohagi Kisku and Swapna Rani Roy in their native Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon.
By defeating four-time finalists and hosts Nepal, the Bangladesh national women’s football team has emerged as the new champions in the seven-nation SAFF Women's Championship.
Players of the winning team, Sohagi is the daughter of Gulzar Kisku of Bongaon Sialdangi village while Swapna is the daughter of Niren Chandra Roy of Rangatungi village in the upazila.
Both began their football journeys from the fields of Rangatungi village, being members of the Rangatngi United Women’s Football Academy.
The entire district has worn a festive mood since Monday night. Residents have been distributing sweets to celebrate the win and the contributions of the two local girls.
The district administration has decided to honour the two players with a grand reception.
Sohel Sultan Julkar Nine, Ranisankail upazila nirbahi officer, said that "Swapna and Sohagi are the pride of the district and they will be given a reception on October 5 as they return home on vacation from Dhaka".
“Despite hailing from poor families, both the women players have managed to overcome every obstacle to cement their place in the national team. They have made the entire country proud, “said Tajul Islam, retired principal of Rangatungi United Women’s Football Academy.
However, both their families are economically backward and need financial help, he said.
Bhurungamari secondary education officer suspended over SSC question leak
Bhurungamari Upazila Secondary Education officer has been suspended for negligence in duty over the incident of question papers leak of SSC examinations at Nehal Uddin Pilot Girls' High School.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Thursday issued a notice in this regard saying the order will be effective from September 22.
According to Bangladesh Government Service rule,2018, Bhurungamari Upazila Secondary Education officer, Md Abdur Rahman has been suspended but will receive a subsistence allowance, said the notice.
On Wednesday, SSC examinations on four subjects under the Dinajpur Education Board were postponed due to question papers leak in Kurigram's Bhurungamari upazila.
Copies of English 1st paper and 2nd paper of the ongoing SSC examinations went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp on Monday and Tuesday.
So far, six people, including headmaster and secretary of Bhurungamari Nehal Uddin Pilot High School, have been held in Kurigram in this connection.
Dinajpur Board also formed a three-member probe committee headed by Professor Faraz Uddin Talukdar, college inspector of the Education Board.
The postponed SSC examinations on four subjects under the Dinajpur Education Board will be held from October 10 to 13.
The four subjects are: Mathematics, Physics, Agricultural Science and Chemistry.
Exams on other subjects will be held as per the schedule.
Kurigram SSC examinees form human chain demanding probe into question leak
Some SSC examinees formed a human chain in Kurigram demanding investigation in question paper leak and timely completion of their exams.
The students formed the human chain in front of Kurigram Press Club on Thursday morning.
“Despite repeated assurances from the Education Minister, questions got leaked at the Bhurungamari Nehal Uddin Girls High School center. We urge the authorities concerned to find out those responsible for the leak and take action against them,” said Zakiul Islam, a SSC examinee from Kurigram Government High School.
The students also said that the question leak occurred due to utter failure of the administration and the law enforcement agencies.

They demanded for holding the postponed exam within October 1.

Ex-Rohingya leader assassinated in Cox’s Bazar
Unidentified elements shot and hacked to death a former Rohingya leader of a camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Wednesday.
Jafar Alam was an ex-leader (known as Majhi in the community) of camp no.18 in the upazila.
Alam was out and about in the camp late last night when the miscreants first shot him, and then attacked him with sharp hand-held weapons around 3.30am. They left the spot soon after, Faruk Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN)-8, said.
Alam was left for dead, losing dangerous amounts of blood, but eventually was taken to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong. Even from there he had to be redirected to Chattogram to have any hope but died on the way.
Efforts are on to nab the perpetrators in this connection, the police officer added.
Palichora village in Rangpur gears up to welcome its football hero, Shopna
Rangpur's daughter Sirat Jahan Shopna, member of the Bangladesh women's football team, has made its residents proud with her role in the team clinching the title in the seven-nation SAFF Women's Championship.
Those who once mocked Shopna for her dream to become a footballer are now overjoyed with her success.
In fact, the whole district is now overwhelmed for Shopna from Palichora village of Sadyapuskarini Union, over historical triumph against Nepal in the tournament's final.
In this tournament, Bangladesh beat India 3-0 with Shopna scoring a pair of goals. She scored one goal against Pakistan.
In the final, Shopna was withdrawn due to injury soon after the kick-off.
In all, she scored four goals in this tournament.
Shopna’s mother Lipi Begum used to get angry with her for her interest in football. Later, she surrendered to the girl's indomitable will and encouraged her daughter to fulfil her dream.
Lipi said Shopna grew interest in playing football when she was in class four.
“My brother Abdul Latif took Shopna to groom her to be a footballer and since then she is moving towards her dream.”
Shopna's father Moksar Ali, a farmer, is also overwhelmed with his daughter's success.
He said, “I feel very happy. The Bangladesh women's football team won today and my daughter played in it.”
He also sought the people’s prayers so that she can do something better for the country.
Fans and journalists are thronging Shopna’s home to congratulate her parents.
Milon Khan, the coach of the newly formed Youth Sporting Club of the union, said this village is a village of women footballers.
“This is the first time that one of our daughter Shopna earned fame by winning the SAFF Championship. We have plans to give her a grand reception,” he added.
Bangladesh national women's team reached Dhaka around 1:50 pm today.
After completion of the airport formalities, the heroes of Bangladesh boarded a newly shaped and well-decorated open deck BRTC bus at about 3:30 pm for the BFF office in Motijheel from the airport.
Along the way, they were greeted by thousands of jubilant fans.
On Monday, Bangladesh defeated Nepal 3-1 in the final match, with Shamsunnahar scoring the game's first goal in the 13th minute. Krishna Rani Sarkar scored the final two goals for Bangladesh in the 42nd and 77th minutes, ensuring the nation's first SAFF Women's Championship title.

Kalsindur village in Dubaora upazila on the India-Bangladesh border in Mymensingh is all set to welcome its symbols of pride – eight members of the women's football team who have brought the SAFF glory to the country.
The "golden girls" of the village – Sanjida, Maria Manda, Sheuli Azim, Marzia Akhter, Shamsunnahar, Tahura, Sajeda, and Shamshunnahar Jr – represented the Bangladesh team that clinched the South Asian women's football crown for the first time Monday, breaking India's 12-year monopoly.
Thanks to them, the name Kalsindur has spread across the country and abroad. The once neglected village on the border of the Garo Hills is now electrified and its roads are paved due to the fame of the girls.
The stories of these girls have also made it to the textbooks of Class XI of the higher secondary level. There is a special lesson in the textbook "The Unbeaten Girls." Biographies of Sanjida, Maria, Tahura, Shamsunnahar, Sheuli, Najma Akhtar, and Marzia are recorded here.
Ans the villagers, who once could not think of letting girls play football, is now ready to welcome their heroes back with smiles, cheers and flowers.
Kalsindur School and College Assistant Professor Nazmul Haque said a joint meeting of local administration, public representatives and Kalsindur School and College authorities will be held Thursday at noon to welcome the women footballers.
Bangladesh thrashed hosts Nepal 3-1 to win the SAFF Women's Championship title at Kathmandu's Dasharath Rangasala Stadium.
During the historic final, Bangladesh got off to a great start when Kalsindur's Shamsunnahar Jr put her team in the lead in the 13th minute.
The unbeaten team arrived at Dhaka Airport around 2pm Wednesday.
