Trader slaughtered in Cumilla
A trader was slaughtered by some miscreants at his house in Nurpur Chowmuhani area of Cumilla city Sunday night.
The deceased is Rafi Sarwar, son of late Anwar Hossain of the area. He was involved in the mobile recharge business.
Police said Rafi's mother Syda Aktar returned home from a relative's home and found his son's slaughtered body lying on bed around 9pm.

Later, police recovered the body at 10pm, said Sahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station.
The motive behind the murder is not yet known, said the OC.
The cause of the murder is being investigated. Criminal Investigation Department (CID) members collected several clues from the scene, the OC added.
718 more Rohingyas leave for Bhasan Char
As many as 718 Rohingya refugees left Ukhia camps in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday in the 10th phase of relocation on Bhasan Char island in Noakhali.
The Rohingya men, women and children left for Chattogram on 13 buses from the Ukhia Degree College field at 1 am.
Shamsuddauja, additional refugee relief and repatriation commissioner in Cox's Bazar said, these Rohingya refugees are being relocated on the 10th phase and process is on to send more who agreed to go to Bhasan Char.
The 718 Rohingyas will reach Bhasan Char by Monday noon, he said.

Jahirul Islam,Camp-Incharge in Bhasan Char said exact number of refugees to be located on the tenth phase is yet to be known.
“We’ve made preparations to send them to their respective centres after reaching here,” he said.
In nine phases, over 20,000 Rohingyas have been shifted to Bhasan Char from December 2020.
Another batch of 306 Rohingya refugees were sent to Bhasan Char in May, 2020 after rescuing them from the sea while illegally migrating to Malaysia, according to officials.

Bangladesh is currently hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas in camps in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Most of them came since August 25, 2017, when the Myanmar military launched a brutal offensive targeting the Muslim ethnic minorities.
Post-polls violence: 2 killed, 20 injured in Narsingdi
Two people were killed and some 20 more injured on Sunday during a clash between the supporters of newly elected chairman and former chairman of Bashgari Union Parishad in Narsingdi.
The deceased were identified as Rubel Mia, 26 and Mamun Mia,30.
The incident occurred in the morning at Amtali boat terminal in the Raipura upazila.

According to locals, supporters of former UP Chairman Kazi Ashraful Haque had to remain away from the locality for two months after the election due to conflicts with the newly elected UP chairman Zakir Hasan Ratul.
As some supporters of Ashraful tried to enter the area on Sunday a clash with the Zakir Hasan group started and both the parties attacked with spears and fired bullets at each other, they said.
Rubel died on the spot after being hit by a bullet on the head and Mamun succumbed to his injuries at Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex later.
Others injured in the clash are currently being treated at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and other local private hospitals.

Ataur Rahman, Inspector of Raipura police station said, “ Rubel Mia’s death was confirmed in the clash and his body is currently kept at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Another man’s death was reported but could not be confirmed yet.”
Police have been deployed in the area and the situation is currently under control, he said.
Two arrested with 3 gecko lizards in Jashore
Two men were arrested with three illegally caught gecko lizards at Manirampur upazila in Jashore while selling them on Saturday night.
The arrestees were identified as Bishwajit Mondal from Manoharnagar village and Abdul Khaleque from Dakkhin Joynagar village in Bhola, said District Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Acting on a tip off about Rezaul Islam in Biprokona village in the upazila and a gecko (takshak) selling group BD police conducted a drive at his house around 10pm.

Rezaul managed to run away but Bishwajit and Khaleque were detained from the spot, Police rescued the geckos from a bag with them and recovered Tk 30,000 from Khaleque , said DB police.
Sub-Inspector of DB, Rajesh Kumar Dash filed a case at Manirampur police station in this regard on Sunday, said Mahbubur Rahman , inspector of Manirampur police station.
A group in the area has been deceiving people saying geckos are used for making medicines to treat cancers, he said.

Man beaten dead ‘by in-laws’ in Khulna
A man was beaten to death allegedly by his brother-in-law and father-in-law at Miyapara Pipermor in Khulna city Saturday afternoon.
The deceased is Md Sabuj, 30, a resident of the area.
Sabuj’s father-in-law Siddique and brother-in-law Sagar beat him up severely after he had a quarrel with his wife.
They hit on his head and chest with bricks and then stabbed him with knives, said locals.
He was rescued and taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital by locals and where he died at night.
Sabuj used to live with his wife in a rented house in the area. His in-law’s house was near Tota Bridge in Labanchora area.

Khulna Sadar Police officer-in-charge (OC) Hasan Al-Mamun said it is being investigated whether Sabuj was beaten to death by them.
Sabuj’s family has not yet filed any complaint yet, he said.

3 journos injured while reporting on UP polls in Thakurgaon
Three journalists were seriously injured by some miscreants on Saturday while collecting news on upcoming UP elections in Thakurgaon.
The injured journalists are Tanvir Hossain Tanu, district correspondent of Independent television, Mainuddin Talukdar Himel, correspondent for RisingBD website, and Sohel Rana, correspondent of NewsBangla24 and Doinik Bhorer Akash.
According to witnesses, ahead of the Senua Union Parishad set to be held on February 7, candidate Motiur Rahman was conducting his election campaign in Molankhur Mandalpara.

At one point some supporters of his rival candidate attacked the campaigners with arms and as the journalists went to take photos, the miscreants beat them up.
The journalists said their cameras, mobile phones were broken and moneybags were snatched during the attack.
Locals and other journalists rescued the three journalists and admitted them to Thakurgaon General Hospital.

Rakibul Alam Chayan, Resident Medical Officer of the hospital, said the injured received primary medications and further treatments will be provided after examining their physical condition.
Pre-poll violence: 1 killed, 12 hurt in Jamalpur
A man was killed and 12 people suffered injuries on Saturday during a clash between supporters of two member candidates of Pingna UP election in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur.
The deceased was identified as Bhola Sheikh,60,of Kajla village in Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj.
According to witnesses, a clash between supporters of Nurul Islam and Sujat Ali, member candidates of ward-3 of the UP, started around 10 am over campaigning near Fazlu member’s house at Paschim Nalchanda village in Pingna union.
Sujat Ali’s supporters obstructed the election campaign of Nurul Islam in the area, claimed Nurul Islam’s supporters.
After that the rival candidate’s supporters allegedly abducted Rubel Mia, 21, son of Amir Hossain from Sandhya village and a supporter of member candidate Sujat Ali.

In the hour-long clash Bhola Sheikh died on the spot as the opponent group hit him on his head, said his wife Laily Sheikh.
Injured in the incident Abdul Halim, 59, Tutul, 50, and Shukkur, 49, were admitted at Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex while other injured received primary medications.
Abdul Latif, in-charge of Tarakandi police investigation centre said efforts are on to finc ou missing Rubel Mia.
Mir Rakibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sarishabari police station, said the body was recovered from the spot and sent for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Superintendent of Jamalpur police said 15 people have been detained over the incident for interrogation.

Covid surge in Rajshahi: Shops, restaurants to shut by 8pm
Rajshahi district administration has ordered closure of shops, shopping malls, recreation centers, restaurants and all business establishments by 8 pm amid an alarming surge in Covid cases in the district.
The directive will be effective from January 29 along with all other directives imposed by the government to curb Covid-19 until any further notice, according to a notice issued by Abdul Jalil, Deputy Commissioner of the district.
DC Abdul Jalil said the decision was taken on Friday night in an emergency meeting of the district Covid control and prevention committee.

The decision it was announced through mike on Friday, he said.
Besides, a team was formed and police administration was informed to enforce the decision.
On Friday the case positivity rate in the district stood at 64.52 per cent after detecting 120 cases among 186 sample tests, said Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani, director of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).

70-year old woman dies in fire in Chandpur
A 70-year old woman died on Thursday night in a fire that broke out in her house at Paschim Santoshpur village in Chandpur.
The deceased was identified as Bely Begum, daughter of Lony Mia in Faridganj upazila.

Her neighbour Jannat Aktar said hearing her cry for help at 9 pm they tried to control the fire but couldn’t rescue her alive as the door was locked from inside.
The neighbours suspect the fire started from the cooking gas cylinder blast.
Five fire fighters managed to douse the blaze later, said Ohidul Islam, station officer of Algi Fire Fire Service.
The exact cause of the fire could not be known immediately, he said.

Md Shahid Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Farid Ganj police station said the woman’s charred body was recovered.
Legal procedure is underway in this regard, he said.
Worker dies in Ctg gas cylinder blast
A 30-year-old worker was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at a steel factory in Bashbaria area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram Thursday noon.
The deceased was identified as Ranjit Das, son of Shridam Das of Kumira Ghatghar area of the upazila.
Police said the gas cylinder went off when Ranjit was cutting scrap iron inside the rod factory of GPH Steel Ltd around 12pm, leaving Ranjit dead on spot.
The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) morgue, said Ashraful Karim, assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) of Sitakunda circle.
