‘Drug trader’ killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Uttar Sheikhpur village in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ekramul Hossain alias Arif, 32, son of Abdul Aziz Mondal of Uttar Gopalpur village in Panchbibi upazila. He was accused in several drug cases.
Additional superintendent of police MM Mohaimunir Rashid, company commander of Rab-5, said a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Swashanghat of the village around 3am to recover drugs.
When the team approached the area, a gang of drug traders opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gun battle.

Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir, divisional director of the Directorate General of Health Services, on Tuesday night said some 140 samples were tested at the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID) in the last 24 hours and of those, four tested positive for coronavirus.
Of them, a 10-month-old baby of Joara village in Chandanaish upazila was found infected with coronavirus while the rest three were from Bandarban district.
Five people have so far died from coronavirus while 74 have been infected with the virus in the district.
Female schoolteacher found hanging in Jashore
A female schoolteacher was found hanging at her house at Narikelbaria in Manirampur upazila of Jashore district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Asma Khatun, 30, a teacher of a kindergarten and wife of Rafiqul Islam of the village.
Shikdar Matiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station, said police recovered the hanging body of the woman at night after being informed by locals.
Rafiqul developed an illicit affair with another woman and Asma might have taken her life for this, said police.
Police sent the body to Jashore General Hospital for autopsy.
Youth dies of respiratory complications in Bhola
A young man died of respiratory problems at Sadar Hospital in Bhola on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Rob, 20, a farmer of Ali Nagar in Sadar upazila.
