BPL 2022: Mahmudul shines on debut as Comilla outplay Barishal
Riding on 48 by Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) debutant Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Comilla Victorians beat Fortune Barishal by 63 runs on Tuesday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
It was the second win for the Victorians in two matches they have played so far in the BPL while it was the second defeat for Barishal in three matches so far.
Barishal won the toss in this match and sent Comilla to bat first, who made a good start as Cameron Delport and Joy added 33 in the first 3.2 overs. Joy smashed Nayeem Hasan for two fours and one six in the very second over of the match, and in the next over, bowled by Barishal captain Shakib Al Hasan, Delport hit three fours.
While Joy continued to keep the scoreboard afloat, Delport fell prey to Nayee in the fourth over of the innings for 19 off 13 balls.
In the sixth over, Shakib removed Faf du Plessis, the former South African superstar who is yet to announce his presence in BPL with his signature batting skills. This time, he only returned six off 11 deliveries.
Imrul Kayes, the veteran top-order batter, was also lean in the middle in Tuesday’s match as he scored only 15 off 11 balls. They eventually ended up on a challenging total of 158 for seven in 20 overs, fueled by Afghan allrounder Karim Janat’s 16-ball 29 with one four and three sixes.
For Barishal, Dwayne Bravo, the West Indian allrounder, bagged three wickets conceding 30 runs in four overs while Shakib scalped two.
In reply, Barishal batters were clueless to play against the spin of Nahidul Islam who conceded only five runs in four overs and scalped three wickets including Chris Gayle. The right-arm offspinner also bagged the wickets of Shykat Ali and Shakib.
Nahidul’s first prey was Shykat who fell for a duck in the very first over, which made it tough for Barishal to come up with a good start in pursuit of a challenging target of 159 runs.
Najmul Hossain Shanto was the best batter for Barishal scoring 36 off 47 balls at a strike rate of 76.59. Apart from him, Nurul Hasan and Towhid Hridoy were the other two batters to have reached a double-digit score— 17 and 19 respectively.
While Nahidul got three wickets, Shohidul Islam, Tanvir Islam and Karim Janat took two wickets each.
Comilla Victorians will play their next match against Chattogram Challengers on January 31 while Barishal will play against Khulna Tigers on January 29. Both of these matches will be played in the port city of Chattogram.

BPL 2022: Challengers pick up 2nd win defending the highest total
Chattogram Challengers clinched their second win in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on Monday beating Khulna Tigers by 25 runs at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The Challengers now have two wins in three games while Khulna Tigers suffered the first defeat in two matches.
Challengers batted first in the match and posted 190 for 7— the highest team total so far in the ongoing BPL.
Kennar Lewis and Will Jacks laid a good foundation for them scoring 29 runs just in 1.3 overs thanks to Sohrawordi Shuvo who conceded 23 runs in the first over of the match.
After that fiery start, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Benny Howell posted 32, 30, and 34 respectively to put up a challenging total.

Sabbir and Mehidy shared a 48-run stand in the fourth wicket partnership that helped the Challengers to get close to 200. Their second-best partnership came in the sixth wicket when Howell and Shamim Hossain added 32 runs off 17 balls.
Khulna’s right-arm pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi scalped two wickets while Naveen-ul-Haq and Farhad Reza bagged one wicket each. Three other wickets were lost to run-out.
In reply, Yasir Ali hit 40 off 26 balls with two fours and three sixes at a strike rate of surpassing 150.
But his effort went in vain as the other Khulna batters were unable to respond properly to chase down a target of 191 runs.
Mahedi Hasan scored 30 off 20 balls while Zimbabwean recruit of Khulna Sikandar Raza posted 22 off 12 balls, but they eventually fell short of 25 runs. Kamrul Islam Rabbi scored 14 off 7 balls at the end but he failed to change the fate of the match.
For the Challengers, Shoriful Islam, Mehidy, and Rejaur Rahman Raja scalped two wickets each.
The match saw an incident of concern when Andre Fletcher was hit on his neck by a nasty bouncer of Rejaur during the seventh over of Khulna’s innings.

Fletcher was immediately stretchered off the field, and Sikandar Raza took the field as his concussion substitute.

These two teams will lock the horns again on January 28.
Shakib completes 400 wickets in T20s

Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor reveals drugs, fixing scandals
Brendan Taylor, the former captain of the Zimbabwe national cricket team, admitted Monday he took money from match-fixers who tried to blackmail him into manipulating games with a secret video of him using cocaine on a visit to India in 2019.
Taylor said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) was about to impose a “multi-year ban” on him and he had decided to release his statement in advance of that.
Even though he took $15,000 from the fixers, Taylor said he never fixed or manipulated games. The 35-year-old batsman retired from international cricket late last year. He added that he was invited to India to discuss a sponsorship opportunity in October 2019. At a dinner with businessmen, he was offered cocaine and “foolishly took the bait.”
“The following morning, the same men entered my hotel room to show me a video taken of me the night before doing cocaine and told me that if I did not partake in spot-fixing at international matches, the video would be released to the public,” Taylor said in a statement released on his social media handle.
Taylor said he took the $15,000 from the men, who said it was now a “deposit” for him to fix and they promised him another $20,000 once the fixing “job” was complete.
The former Zimbabwe captain said that he took four months to report the incident to the ICC and accepted that was against cricket’s anti-corruption rules. He would “humbly” accept the ban from the ICC, he said, “and only hope that my story will be used as a means of encouragement for cricketers to report any illicit approaches as early as possible.”
Taylor also said that he would be checking into a rehabilitation center on Tuesday “to get clean and get my life back on track.”
“I owe it to myself and to my family to get clean and to put them first,” he said. “I have let a substance take control of me and impair my vision, my morals and my values and it is time that I prioritise what really matters.”
He said he had also been taking medication to treat mental health issues and had been experiencing “hell” for years because of his problems with “drugs and narcotics.”
Taylor played 34 tests, 205 one-day internationals and 45 T20 games for Zimbabwe over a 17-year career from 2004-2021, although he took a three-year sabbatical from internationals in 2015 to play county cricket in England. He was captain from 2011 up until he left for England.
Taylor is one of Zimbabwe’s best players and is fourth on the list of the country’s top run-scorers in test cricket.
His admission comes nearly a year after former Zimbabwe coach Heath Streak was banned from all cricket for eight years for breaching cricket’s anti-corruption code. Streak was suspended because of his relationship with an Indian businessman who sought inside information for illegal betting purposes and bribed Streak with gifts including Bitcoin and an iPhone for his wife.
BPL 2022: Mahmudullah, Russell help Dhaka to register maiden win
Minister Group Dhaka finally won a match in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on Monday beating Fortune Barishal by four wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Mahmudullah Riyad and Andre Russell led the way to their maiden victory coming into the third match.
In the first two matches, Dhaka lost to Khulna Tigers and Chattogram Challengers by five wickets and 30 runs respectively.
On Monday, Shakib Al Hasan-led Barishal batted first and put up 129 on the board losing eight wickets in 20 overs.
Chris Gayle, the West Indian T20 giant, who was playing his first match in this season of BPL, scored the highest 36 for them while Dwayne Bravo posted 33.
For Dhaka, Russell and Isuru Udana bagged two wickets each.
In reply to a moderate total, Dhaka suffered a heavy batting collapse at the start of their innings.

The Sri Lankan team overcame the Bangladesh team by 22 runs in the final fixture of the Qualifier on Monday (January 24) and secured a spot in the forthcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games Cricket competition. With this victory, Sri Lanka finished top, while Bangladesh finished second in the points table. Spinner Rumana Ahmed sent Chamari back to the pavilion in the 10th over. However, the Lankans had already built a solid foundation on which to accelerate the innings in the death overs. In the later stages of the innings, Harshitha Madavi (19), Nilakshi de Silva (28), and Anushka Sanjeewani (20) all contributed with the bat to provide a winnable score to defend. Nahida Akter took the most wickets for Bangladesh in the match with two.
The Bangladesh team was in a solid position at one point during the run chase. They were 93/3 in 15.3 overs. All they needed was some big hitting from the middle order. However, they were unable to accelerate the run rate when it was required despite having enough wickets in hand. Credit must be given to the Sri Lankan bowlers, who were outstanding with the ball and made it difficult for the Bangladesh batters.
Murshida Khatun (36), Fargana Hoque (33), and skipper Nigar Sultana (20) all tried, but it was not enough. Sri Lanka's captain Chamari Athapaththu was the team's most successful bowler. She finished her spell with 4-0-17-3.
