Tigers look to feed off Kolkata vibes to bounce back in World Cup
The main festival of Kolkata, Durga Puja, concluded last week, yet the spirit of celebration continues to grace every street in the city.
Kolkata, known as the "City of Joy," remains infused with joy and festivity of Durga Puja Carnival that took place at the Red Road on Friday. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh cricket team, having a challenging phase in the ICC World Cup, seeks to rekindle their spirit in Kolkata. They aim to restore a sense of pride when they take on the Netherlands at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday after enduring four losses in the five matches they've played in the event so far.

Performance of Bangladesh in the 2023 ODI World Cup So Far
Bangladesh won their first World Cup match against Afghanistan but then faced four consecutive losses to England, New Zealand, India, and South Africa. Their chances of reaching the semi-finals are almost non-existent now, and even a victory against the Netherlands might not make much of a difference.
The Bangladeshi cricket team has a history of performing exceptionally well against strong opponents in major tournaments. However, they have struggled to showcase that potential when playing in India. With key players like Shakib Al Hasan in and out of the lineup, the team has faced difficulties in adapting to the key player's absence.

Shakib Al Hasan recently returned to the team for the match against South Africa but didn't perform well with the bat or ball. To have a chance of defeating the Netherlands, Bangladesh is relying on a strong performance from their experienced all-rounder, Shakib. As the team's captain, he has the responsibility of leading the side, taking wickets, and scoring runs, making his contribution vital to their success.
Following a heavy defeat against South Africa in Mumbai, the Bangladesh cricket team arrived at Kolkata without their captain, Shakib-Al Hasan, on Wednesday. It was revealed that Shakib had gone directly to Mirpur for a brief training session with his mentor, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, focusing primarily on improving his batting skills.
In a different aspect of their batting lineup, the experienced Mahmudullah has stood out as Bangladesh's top run-scorer in this tournament. His recent century against South Africa should boost his confidence. While the Tigers have three bowlers who have taken six wickets each in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, there isn't a standout performer among them. This presents an opportunity for spinner Mehidy Hasan to step up and deliver a strong performance, especially in conditions that favor spin bowling.

Netherlands Team’s Performance in the Ongoing ICC World Cup So Far
On the other hand, the Netherlands suffered losses to Pakistan and New Zealand before surprising everyone with a win against South Africa. That victory held promise for their future matches, but the Dutch team has struggled since then, facing defeats against Sri Lanka and Australia. Their most recent loss, against Australia, was particularly disheartening, with a record-breaking margin of 309 runs.
In the current Cricket World Cup, all-rounder Colin Ackermann and captain Scott Edwards have been the top run-scorers for the Netherlands. Edwards, with an average of over 45 in the tournament, has been a consistent performer. However, he clearly needs stronger support from several other Dutch batsmen who have struggled, with averages below 20.
On the bowling front, seamer Bas de Leede has been the leading wicket-taker for the team in this tournament, with nine wickets in five matches. He'll be eager to bounce back after a tough outing where he conceded the most runs in a 10-over spell in the history of ODI cricket during the match against Australia.

Key Bangladeshi Players to Watch
Mahmudullah
During his innings against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, Mahmudullah Riyad from Bangladesh became the sixth-oldest batsman, at the age of 37 years and 262 days, to score a century in the ODI World Cup. So far, he is the top scorer for Bangladesh in this World Cup and he has been consistent. He scored 198 runs in three innings.
Mushfiqur Rahim
Mushfique could not do well in the last match against South Africa, and he has scored only 8 runs. Apart from this, he scored 51, 66, and 38 runs in the second to fourth matches. So, Mushfiqur has a great chance that he will uplift his performance in the next match at Eden.
Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib is yet to be sparked in this tournament. As he is coming back from an injury and working on his batting in Bangladesh, we can expect a good performance on Saturday. Shakib's only notable performance in this World Cup was 40 runs against New Zealand.

Key Dutch Players to Watch
Colin Ackermann
Colin Ackermann holds the top spot as the Netherlands' highest run-scorer, amassing 137 runs at a strike rate of 85.09. But he only scored 10 runs in the last match against South Africa, and his standout performance came against New Zealand, where he scored 69 runs from 98 balls, marking his best performance in the tournament so far.
Bas de Leede
Bas de Leede contributed to the Netherlands through ball and bat. In five matches, he scored 97 runs. But his contribution through the ball has been significant. He took 9 wickets so far with 4/62 against Pakistan. So, he might fight with a bat and bowl against Bangladesh.
Final Words
Considering their extensive experience in international cricket, Bangladesh are seen as the favorites to win this match. However, it's evident that the Netherlands should not be underestimated and cannot be labeled as minnows. Consequently, Bangladesh will need to deliver their top-level cricket to secure a victory over the Dutch in this Kolkata encounter. Simultaneously, if the Dutch team performs up to their potential (just like they did against South Africa), we could witness them emerging victorious against the Tigers.

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka dominate as England suffer 3rd consecutive defeat
England's Cricket World Cup defence took another hit with an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka. Their total of 156 is the lowest since 2003. Lahiru Kumara's 3-35 led Sri Lanka's attack, while Ben Stokes top-scored for England with 43.
Sri Lanka coasted to victory with 24.2 overs to spare, finishing with 160-2. Pathum Nissanka (77 not out) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65 not out) scored attacking half-centuries.
It was Sri Lanka’s fifth consecutive victory over England in World Cups.
England has just one win — against Bangladesh — from its opening five games at the tournament following heavy losses to New Zealand and South Africa and an upset defeat to Afghanistan.

Its third successive loss means England has made the worst start of any defending champions since the 1999 World Cup. Back then, Sri Lanka lost three out of five games and failed to qualify for the super six stage and the eventual knockouts.
England’s chances of making the semifinals also took a big blow as it is ninth with two points, only above the Netherlands on account of net run-rate.
Sri Lanka climbed to the sixth position with four points.
England got off to a decent start as Jonny Bairstow (30) and Dawid Malan (28) added 45 runs off 39 balls for the first wicket. But Angelo Mathews, playing his first game of the tournament, had Malan caught behind in the seventh over. And two overs later, Joe Root was run out for three.
The collapse began in the 14th over when Bairstow was caught at mid-on off Kasun Rajitha (2-36). Skipper Jos Buttler’s torrid run with the bat continued as he was caught behind off Kumara in the next over.

Liam Livingstone wanted to hit his way out of trouble, but was out lbw for one as England sunk to 85-5 in 17 overs.
Stokes put on 37 runs off 46 balls with Moeen Ali (15) before Mathews got a second wicket as Ali was caught behind after England managed to cross the 100-mark. The veteran all-rounder finished with 2-14 in five overs.
England's collapse continued as they lost the last five wickets for just 34 runs. Stokes was the eighth man out, caught deep off Kumara. In response, Sri Lanka stumbled early, with Willey removing Perera (4) and Mendis (11).
However, Nissanka and Samarawickrama steadied the ship, each reaching 50. Together, they added 137 runs, sealing England's third consecutive World Cup loss, a first since 1996.
World Cup 2023: Shakib to rejoin squad tonight in Kolkata
Following a brief and contentious trip to Bangladesh for practice with his childhood coach, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan is poised to rejoin the national team in Kolkata, India, ahead of their ICC World Cup clash against the Netherlands on Saturday.
Shakib engaged in an intense batting session with his childhood coach, Nazmul Abedin Faheem, today at the Mirpur indoor facilities. However, he did not face the media awaiting him in Mirpur.
The Bangladesh team held a practice session on Thursday at the Eden Gardens, where they played their last and only ODI over three decades ago, despite the venue being one of the closest international grounds for Bangladesh.
Read: ICC World Cup 2023: Shakib leaves team in India for personal practice sessions in Dhaka
Shakib’s sudden decision to return to Dhaka from Kolkata for practice with his coach raised many eyebrows in Bangladesh’s cricket community. It remains unclear why he made such a surprising move when Bangladesh already boasts one of the largest coaching staffs in the World Cup.
The intense batting session with Faheem was meant to work on retaining a more compact shape while batting. This is after twice in the World Cup so far, he was dismissed trying to pull short balls, usually his forte.
It’s evident that Shakib is going through a rough patch. He has only secured six wickets in the four matches he played in this World Cup, and his batting performance yielded just 56 runs—falling below expectations for an all-rounder of Shakib's caliber, particularly on Indian soil, where he has been playing for many years. This fact might have played the main role behind Shakib’s need for his childhood coach.

Alongside Shakib, Bangladesh is also facing a dull period on the field. Out of the five matches they've played so far, they've lost four, making their path to the next phase of the World Cup challenging.
Bangladesh will play their next two matches in Kolkata, where they are expected to have large support in the gallery. People in Kolkata, most of whom also speak Bengali and share Bengali values like the Bangladeshis, and many of them have roots in Bangladesh, are expected to cheer for Bangladesh in this challenging period for the team.
Bangladesh will face the Netherlands on October 28, followed by a match against Pakistan. Despite entering the event as one of the strongest teams in ODIs, Pakistan is also struggling in the World Cup.
The next two encounters are pivotal for Bangladesh. Victories in these matches would give them a slim chance to remain in contention for the next phase of the World Cup. However, defeat would seal their fate, barring them from qualifying for the final four.

England vs. Sri Lanka ODI in ICC Men’s World Cup 2023: Match Preview
England Team’s Performance in the World Cup So Far
The England team is facing significant challenges. Having managed to secure just one victory out of their four matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 group stage, the defending champions are on the edge of a potentially embarrassing elimination. This disappointing turn of events has left fans disheartened. England, however, is not alone in their struggles. Just slightly ahead of them in the standings due to a better net run rate, Sri Lanka is sharing the bottom spot with England.
The 2023 tournament began on a sour note for England as they suffered a defeat against New Zealand. They appeared to regain their footing by defeating Bangladesh in the next match. Nevertheless, a surprising loss to Afghanistan halted England's resurgence, and a significant defeat at the hands of South Africa landed them in the ninth position in the league standings.
Jos Buttler's team suffered their most substantial ODI loss ever against South Africa, effectively signaling the demise of England's weak defense of their World Cup title at the Wankhede Stadium. The Proteas exhibited ruthless efficiency against an underwhelming England bowling unit, scoring 399 runs on the scoreboard in their allotted 50 overs, with Heinrich Klaasen demonstrating a brilliant display of aggressive batting. In reply, Buttler and his team struggled, and it was only a partnership between Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson that prevented England from facing complete humiliation.

Performance of the Sri Lanka Team in the World Cup So Far
On the other hand, Sri Lanka commenced their campaign with three high-scoring matches, although they concluded with losses to South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia. A crucial win against the Netherlands injected some momentum into the Sri Lankan challenge. However, Sri Lanka's batting has generally been sharp, with scores exceeding 300 in two matches against South Africa and Pakistan and a successful chase of 253. However, their bowling has been somewhat inconsistent, particularly when facing stronger opponents. This is an area that England will likely aim to capitalize on, while the Lankans aim to capitalize on the confidence they gained from a win over the Netherlands.
When it comes to their team selection, England has already utilized all 15 players they brought along, leaving them with limited options. However, there is a remaining hope that Brydon Carse, who is set to join the team, can have a similar impact to Liam Plunkett, bolstering their performance in the middle overs. The batting department has underperformed, with only one century and four fifties so far, but they might find some comfort in facing a Sri Lankan bowling attack that initially struggled by conceding scores of 428 for 5 and 345 for 4 in the tournament.
Regarding Sri Lanka's aspirations, securing a spot in the top four is a tough challenge, especially with upcoming matches against India and New Zealand. Nevertheless, they have displayed flashes of their potential, primarily through Kusal Mendis, who has taken on the captaincy in addition to his wicketkeeping duties, and Sadeera Samarawickrama's batting performances. Additionally, Dilshan Madushanka has demonstrated his wicket-taking skill with the ball.

English Players to Watch
Dawid Malan
Dawid Malan's remarkable innings of 140 against Bangladesh paved the way for England's only victory in the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup as of the time of writing. Teaming up with Jonny Bairstow as an opening batsman, Malan has displayed occasional brilliance but has also struggled with consistency. However, his explosive potential is evident when he is at his best.
Adil Rashid
Once again, the ever-reliable Adil Rashid has been England's primary choice to stop the opposition's batting aggressiveness and capture key wickets, particularly during the crucial middle overs. Rashid has notched up six wickets in four matches in this World Cup and stands as the second most prolific bowler for the reigning champions, trailing only behind the injured Reece Topley.
Gus Atkinson
Gus Atkinson, who played only one match and bowled for nine overs, managed to take two wickets but gave away 60 runs in the process. He might be the solution to England's bowling needs. His upcoming contest against the effective Sri Lankan batters on Thursday could determine how the important game unfolds.
Sri Lankan Players to Watch
Dilshan Madushanka
To stop the English batsman from scoring, Sri Lanka is expected to bring in Dilshan Madushanka as their bowler. This left-arm fast bowler has been performing well in the tournament so far, taking 11 wickets in four matches, which is the second-best performance. In one of the matches, he took four wickets for 50 runs when they played against the Netherlands.
Sadeera Samarawickrama
Sadeera Samarawickrama has been performing really well. The 28-year-old has had a standout tournament, scoring a total of 230 runs in four games. Notably, he scored 91 runs in one match against the Netherlands and 108 runs against Pakistan. So, he can replicate this against England.
Kusal Mendis
Mendis played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's first two games. He scored 76 runs off 42 balls in a challenging chase against South Africa and followed that with a hundred in just 65 balls against Pakistan. It's worth noting that he's one of the four remaining players in the Sri Lankan team who were part of the squad that caused an upset by defeating England at Headingley in the 2019 World Cup.
Final Words
October 26’s ODI match between England and Sri Lanka is expected to be a closely fought contest, as both teams have been dealing to uplift their ranking in the points table. As both teams have had their moments of success in the past, any of them can win the match. Not to mention, the ENG vs SL ODI match in the ICC World Cup 2023 would be quite interesting and is full of possibilities.

Star batsman Steve Smith will be under the spotlight. He has only managed 72 runs in four games in this tournament, with a highest score of 46 against India.
Australia sits in fourth place in the standings with a 2-2 record, including a win last Friday over Pakistan. Australia and Pakistan are level on points but the Australians have a better net run- rate and have played one game fewer.
The Dutch side is 1-3, its only win coming in a huge upset victory over South Africa last week.
It is seventh in the standings, equal on two points with Sri Lanka, defending champion England and Bangladesh but ahead on net run-rate.
