After losing the Test series by a 1-0 margin against the host Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have a chance to take avengewhen the Lankans ODI side visits Bangladesh this May to play a 3-match limited over series.
Bangladesh will focus entirely on the One-Day International series against Sri Lanka. In fact, Bangladesh will have a chance to leapfrog every team in the ICC ODI World Cup Super League points table and take the top spot. The Tigers can also narrow the gap with Pakistan, which is ranked sixth in the ICC ODI rankings.
If Bangladesh completes a 3-0 clean sweep over Sri Lanka, the team Tigers' will occupy the top spot of the CWC Super League. Thus, the Tamim Iqbal-led team will have a golden opportunity to climb to the top of the ICC CWC ODI Super League points table.
Meanwhile, if Sri Lanka wins by the same 3-0 margin against Bangladesh, then they will open their account in the Super League as well as move into the top eight in the points table. The Sri Lankan team will also close the gap with Bangladesh in the ICC One-Day International rankings.

Bangladesh fell to sixth place in the CWC Super League after losing the New Zealand series 3-0. Bangladesh came close to defeating New Zealand in the second One-Day International but ultimately fell short. They would have advanced into the top three positions in the current standings if they had won a game in New Zealand.
However, it is a fact that the Bangladesh team will not have a smooth task ahead of them, as Sri Lanka is still a competitive ODI side. But their recent ODI record is poor. Sri Lanka's last limited-overs series against the Windies ended in a 3-0 loss. In that case, they will undoubtedly be anxious heading into the Bangladesh series.
On the other side, Bangladesh are in excellent form in the One-Day International format. They thrashed the Windies in their last one-day international series at home. Besides that, two main players of Bangladesh, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman will be available for the series. They were unable to play the Test series against the Lankans due to their involvement in the ongoing IPL.
The series will feature a full-strength Bangladesh team. For that reason, Bangladesh will be the favorite to win the contest and the hosts can even hand a 3-0 clean sweep to Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series.
The BCB has named a preliminary squad of 23 players for the Sri Lanka series, and the players who didn't take part in the Test series have already begun training in Mirpur.

Bangladesh's preliminary squad for the Sri Lanka series
Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Naim, ImrulKayes, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, MahediHasan, MehidyHasanMiraz, Taijul Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Shohidul Islam.
Verdict
Bangladesh Can Rank Top in ICC ODI Super League for the first time if they can whitewash Sri Lanka in the ODI series. But Bangladesh must first focus on winning the series against Sri Lanka in order to improve their place in the ICC Super League for the direct 2023 World Cup berth. In addition, Bangladesh need to treat every Super League match equally because each is worth ten points.

Imrul eyes his new opportunity
Left-arm batsman Imrul Kayes, who has been called up in the Bangladesh ODI preliminary squad for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka, said he is eager to make use of this opportunity.
After Bangladesh’s first day-night Test in Kolkata in 2019, Imrul had been out of the national set-up.
“I would like to thank the selectors for believing in me,” Imrul said over a video message on Sunday. “I have been called in the preliminary squad for the upcoming home series. This is very inspiring for me. When you stay out of the national team, you cannot prepare well for the future. So it’s a big opportunity for me. I would like to make use of it.”
In his last 10 ODI innings, Imrul hit two centuries and two half-centuries with the best of 144 against Zimbabwe at home in 2018.
“I was very upset being out of the national set up. I have missed the dressing room a lot. Still, it’s good to be sidelined sometimes. It helps a player to rethink his game and other things,” Imrul added.
“And I would like to say one more thing that I never felt that I’m out of the national team for good. I always think that I’m just beside the team, and I have to work hard to join the team,” he further added.
Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s ODI captain, has recently hinted that he would love to see some ‘old’ guys back to the ODI set-up. He, however, didn’t mention any name. And now, Imrul is in the team.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the preliminary ODI squad on Saturday including Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman, who are currently busy playing the Indian Premier League.
The preliminary ODI squad of Bangladesh:
Tamim Iqbal, Naim Sheikh, Imrul Kayes, Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah Riyad, Afif Hossain, Musaddek Hossain, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam and Shohidul Islam
We should play spin better: Najmul Hossain
In the ongoing Kandy Test against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have lost 15 wickets so far, and of them, 13 went to the Lankan spinners. The Lankan spinners put Bangladesh on the backfoot.
Bangladesh batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto said they should play spin better if they really want to shine in Tests. In both innings of the Kandy Test, Shanto fell prey to the spinners. In the first innings, he was haunted by Ramesh Mendis, and in the second, he got dismissed by Praveen Jayawickrama.
“It was tough to play against spin in this sort of tracks,” Shanto said in a virtual press conference after the day’s play. “There was much more spin than usual, but if we want to play Tests, we should play spin better.”

The first Test of the series ended in a draw when the bowlers got nothing from the wicket. A total of 17 wickets fell in the first game at the same venue. So it was expected that the hosts will provide a better wicket in the second match.
“It’s normal that the bowlers will get substantial help from the wicket on the fourth day of a Test match. Most of us have had a good start to their innings but we failed to carry on. Had we lost three wickets, we would have a good chance in this game,” Shanto added.
At the end of day four, Bangladesh need to score 260 in 98 overs to win this game or bat the entire day to save it with only five wickets in hand. Shanto believes that if Bangladesh can bat for two sessions without losing a wicket, they have something to get from this Test.

“We still have two batsmen in the wicket. If we can bat well in the first two sessions, we have something to think about this game,” he further added.
In the first innings of the first Test, Shanto hit his maiden ton Test. But in the next two innings, he suffered a duck each before coming up with 26 in the third. His inconsistency cost Bangladesh a lot.
“The important thing for me is not to be too happy because of success or not to be too broken because of failure. I have done badly in the last two innings after a good one. I failed to play a longer innings despite having a good start today (Sunday). I am not worried about these things much. I rather am looking forward to doing well when I get the next chance,” Shanto added.
Dhaka Premier League to begin on May 31 in T20 format
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) has decided to hold the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) 2019-20 from 31 May 2021.
The previous season of the league was called off due to the surge of Covid-19 outbreak in the country after just one completed round of matches.
The competition will now have a fresh start and will be played in a T20 format instead of the usual 50 overs.
“The CCDM with the support of the BCB’s plan to organise the DPL from May 31,” CCDM Chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed was quoted in a media release sent by BCB on Sunday evening.
“As decided earlier it will be a T20 event. Considering the busy international schedule and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, we believe that T20 is the ideal format for the 2019-20 League,” he added.
After the suspension of last year’s Dhaka League, BCB organized two makeshift events later last year— BCB President’s Cup and Bangabandhu T20 Cup. BCB had also started this year’s National Cricket League, but due to the recent surge of Covid-19 cases, they opted to hold it temporarily.
“The BCB president has given a clear direction on the importance of players’ safety during these times. The board has successfully completed two tournaments this season and has hosted the West Indies in Bangladesh. We will draw from these learnings and make plans for the Bangabandhu DPL accordingly. We know what this league means to the players and clubs and appreciate their support during the planning stage,” Kazi Inam further added.
Tigers have mountain to climb to save Kandy Test
Bangladesh lost five wickets for 177 runs at the end of the fourth day in Kandy Sunday while chasing 437 runs in the second Test against Sri Lanka.
Ramesh Mendis and 22-year-old Praveen Jayawickrama, bagged three and two wickets to keep Bangladesh at bay. The Tigers will have to score 260 runs on the fifth day of the match to win the game or bat for the entire day to save it at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
All the Bangladeshi batters, who have already been dismissed, made a good start to their innings but failed to carry on against the quality spin of the hosts.
Sri Lanka declared their second innings on 194 for nine securing a lead of 436 runs. Dimuth Karunarate scored 66 for the hosts as Taijul Islam took five wickets for the Tigers.

Bangladesh have been playing Test cricket over the past twenty years. Many of the tigers’ top players have represented the country in Test cricket. So far, 98 Bangladeshi cricketers have competed in Test format. Therefore, it's difficult to choose the best playing XI from among them. In this case, stats were given preference in order to select the best XI. However, some may be dissatisfied with this XI as it's possible that one or two of your favorite players may not find a place in this team. The players who made the final cut in Bangladesh’s greatest Test XI
1) Tamim Iqbal
M: 64* | Runs: 4,764* | HS: 206 | Ave: 39.70 | 100s: 09
The first name on the list came as no surprise. Tamim Iqbal has emerged as Bangladesh's best opener in all formats during their first 20 years of Test cricket history. The dashing left-hander is without a doubt the Tigers' most prolific run-scorer and an obvious choice for the opening spot. He has amassed nearly 5,000 runs at an average of almost 40 since making his Test debut back in 2008.

2) ImrulKayes
M: 39 | Runs: 1,797 | HS: 150 | Ave: 24.28 | 100s: 03
Bangladesh have always struggled to find a reliable opening pair. ImrulKayes, Javed Omar, and ShahriarNafees were the frontrunners for the spot. But we're going for ImrulKayes, who made a record-breaking 312-run opening partnership with Tamim Iqbal against Pakistan in 2015.
3) MominulHaque
M: 44* | Runs: 3,247 | HS: 181 | Ave: 42.72 | 100s: 11
The current Test captain and Bangladesh's most prolific batsman in the longer version format over the past few years, MominulHaque is the only suitable contender for the position. The left-handed top-order batsman even enjoys batting at No. 3. Mominul always scores big when he's in top form.
4) Mushfiqur Rahim
M: 74* | Runs: 4,645 | HS: 219* | Ave: 37.16 | 100s: 07
Mushfiqur Rahim is Bangladesh's most experienced middle-order batsman in all three formats. His track record speaks for itself, which is why he's known as Mr. Dependable. He holds the record of the highest Test scorer (219) in an innings for Bangladesh. He is also the most successful wicket-keeper of Bangladesh cricket history.
5) Mohammad Ashraful
M: 61 | Runs: 2,737 | HS: 190 | Ave: 24.00 | 100s: 06
At number five, we've picked Mohammad Ashraful, arguably Bangladesh cricket's most controversial figure. Despite many scandals, Ashraful's importance to the Bangladesh cricket team cannot be overlooked. He became the youngest Test centurion in history on his debut against Sri Lanka in 2001.
6) Shakib Al Hasan
M: 57 | Runs: 3,930 | HS: 217 | Ave:39.69 | 100s: 05 | Wkts: 210 | BBI: 7/36 | Ave: 31.20
Bangladesh's best all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been placed in the number six position. He is the third-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in the Test format. Shakib is the only Bangladeshi to scalp more than 200 Test wickets. So, he is an automatic choice on the list.

7) Mohammad Rafique
M: 33 | Runs: 1,059 | HS: 111 | Ave:18.57 | 100s: 01 | Wkts: 100 | BBI: 6/77 | Ave: 40.76
One of the greatest spinners of Bangladesh cricket is Mohammad Rafique. He was hugely popular among Bangladesh cricket fans in the late 90s. Mohammad Rafique is the first Bangladeshi bowler to scalp 100 Test wickets. He was a useful batsman in the late middle order, and also was best known for his six-hitting ability.
8) MehidyHasanMiraz
M: 26* | Runs: 855 | HS: 103 | Ave:20.35 | 100s: 01 | Wkts: 103 | BBI: 7/58 | Ave: 34.25
Mehdi HasanMiraj has been included in the squad as an all-rounder. Miraj achieved international fame in 2016 after helping Bangladesh in winning a Test match against England. He has been a regular member of Bangladesh's Test squad since then. Miraj reached the milestone of 100 Test wickets in just 24 Tests.
9) MashrafeMortaza
M: 36 | Wkts: 78 | BBI: 6/77 | Ave: 41.52
Our first choice for the pace attack is Narail Express MashrafeMortaza. Mashrafe is Bangladesh's first genuine pace bowler, with a top speed of 140 km/h. Due to a series of injuries, he couldn't prolong his Test career but his prowess and class are undeniable.
10) Taijul Islam
M: 33* | Wkts: 130 | BBI: 8/39 | Ave: 33.45
Taijul Islam is Bangladesh's second-most successful Test bowler. He has taken 130* Test wickets for the Tigers' so far. Taijul also holds the record of highest wicket-taker (8/39) in an innings for Bangladesh. On a slow pitch, the left-arm orthodox spinner is a lethal bowler. He is capable of checking the run rates.
11) Shahadat Hossain
M: 38 | Wkts: 72 | BBI: 6/27 | Ave: 51.81
Shahadat Hossain is Bangladesh's second-most successful fast bowler in the Tests. As a result, he's our first choice for Mashrafe's bowling partner. He gave it all during his stint on Bangladesh's national side especially in many difficult conditions, which is really admirable.
