Chandika Hathurasingha takes over as head coach of Bangladesh cricket
Chandika Hathurasingha has officially taken over as the head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. He arrived in Dhaka on Monday and joined the team's practice session on Tuesday, marking his first day in his new role.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reappointed Hathurasingha for the next two years, following his successful first stint as the head coach.
During his first tenure, Bangladesh tasted several historic victories, both at home and abroad, including a famous win against England in the 2015 World Cup and series wins against Pakistan, India, and South America.
Hathurasingha was seen having conversations with key players, including Tamim Iqbal, Taskin Ahmed, and Taijul Islam, during Tuesday's practice session at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
However, he has not yet addressed the media. A press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday, where Hathurasingha will speak to the media and discuss his plans for the team.
The Bangladesh team is gearing up for their upcoming series against England, consisting of three ODIs and three T20 matches, starting on March 1.
Herath looking forward to working with Hathurusingha for Bangladesh
Rangana Herath, the spin bowling coach of the Bangladesh cricket team, has expressed his excitement and confidence in Chandika Hathurusingha, the new head coach of the team. Herath has played with and under Hathurusingha before and believes that Bangladesh cricket will benefit from his presence.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made a recent announcement that Chandika Hathurusingha will take the helm as the head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. Hathurusingha previously had a successful four-year tenure with the team, during which the Tigers experienced a significant improvement in their performance.
In a recent interview with the media, Herath clarified that he does not have a role in the selection of the squad for the upcoming England ODI series. However, he said, he is happy to provide information about the performance of spinners if the selectors or Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ask for it.
According to Rangana Herath, Taijul Islam's impressive performance against the West Indies in the previous series demonstrates his potential to succeed in ODIs.
“I think he has done well against West Indies in the last series. I see Taijul as a bowler who can do well in ODIs as well,” he said.
Herath also shared his thoughts on the ongoing spin camp. He expressed his desire to hold these camps regularly to ensure that the team is well-prepared for future matches with the new talented spinners.
Regarding the upcoming England series, Herath stated that the team's ultimate goal is to win, but they must first follow the process and practice effectively.
With great enthusiasm, Herath also conveyed his positive outlook towards two promising players, whom he believes could be the potential game-changers for the Bangladesh cricket team. One of them is Aminul Islam Biplob, a player whom he has closely worked with for months, and the other is none other than Tanvir Islam, who secured the most wickets in the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and played an integral part in the triumph of Comilla Victorians.
Shakib leaves Peshawar Zalmi for a personal matter
Peshawar Zalmi have suffered a blow as their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has left the squad to attend to an important personal matter. However, Shakib said he would join the team at some point in the ongoing season of PSL.
Shakib has been replaced by Afghanistan's young sensation Azmatullah Omarzai, who impressed the cricketing fraternity with his strong batting ability. Azmatullah will join fellow Afghan players Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the Zalmi squad.
Shakib expressed his disappointment at leaving the tournament midway and hoped to return for the Playoffs if Zalmi qualify.
“I have to temporarily leave the PSL 8 to attend an important personal matter. I know I have a strong fan-base here and I was looking forward to playing all the matches in front of all the fans,” he said.
Shakib also said that he would join the Zalmi squad at some point in the ongoing season.
Zalmi are currently fifth on the points table with one win in two matches they’ve played so far.

Bangladesh Squad Analysis
BCB announced the 14-member squad for the first two matches of the ODI series, whereas a new face, Towhid Hridoy, who spread light with the bat in BPL, got a chance. Meanwhile, five cricketers have been dropped from the 16-member ODI squad played against India last December.
Wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan, pacer Shariful Islam, top order Anamul Haque Bijoy, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, and middle-order batsman Yasir Ali Rabi lost their place in the team due to bad performance in this year's BPL.
However, Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed did well in the India series. But he was not kept in the England series. In this regard, the selectors said that they had kept him in consideration for another edition. He might get a call for T20 or the last ODI.
Tigers' regular ODI captain Tamim Iqbal has returned to the announced ODI squad against England. The team captain was not in the series against India due to injury. Taijul Islam is also back.

Bangladesh cricket team selectors' team selection always raises many questions. Let alone the upcoming England series, and it seemed only a matter of time before Towhid Hridoy got a call-up to the squad after performing brilliantly in the BPL. As expected, he got a call from the team. However, the reason for the questioning is that he performed well in T20 but has been called up to the ODI squad! Hence, everyone will have an eye on him.
Key Batters
One of the best batsmen of the Bangladesh senior cricket team is the left-handed opener, Tamim Iqbal. This experienced opener had to stay out of the team for a long time due to injury. Finally, he is going to return to the team. Tamim is one of the most successful batsmen who played against England. So far, he has played 14 matches and scored 488 runs against England. With a high score of 128, Tamim has two centuries against the English team. So, it is expected that he will give his best as Tamim is returning after a long time.
Towhid Hridoy’s first appearance will be a key moment in this one-day series. As he got a chance in the national team based on his BPL performance, fans will be waiting for his ODI performance. Hridoy has scored 403 runs with the bat in this year's BPL season. Right-handed top-order batsman Hridoy scored this run at a strike rate of 140 with five fifties. Previously he played 49 ODI matches for the Bangladesh U19 team and scored 1624 runs with 5 centuries and 10 half-centuries. So, it is time to see if this experience benefits the Bangladesh team against England.

Litton Das has been in good form recently. However, he has never played any ODI against England. So, we hope to enjoy his incredible batting against a new country. Recently he led Bangladesh against India last December. However, he did have the expected performance against India and scored only 77 runs in three ODIs. But he deserved praise because of his captaincy. He was successful in his first assignment as captain; Bangladesh won the series against India with one match in hand. Since he will not have extra pressure in this tournament, it is expected that Litton Das will be able to give his regular performance.
Broad, Anderson and Bazball devastate NZ in 1st test
For New Zealand the end at least came quickly. England needed less than a session on the fourth day Sunday to complete a 267-run win in the first day-night cricket test and to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Stuart Broad who clean bowled four New Zealand top-order batters late on the third day to leave the home side 63-5 overnight and make the win imminent, finished with 4-49. His long-time and record-breaking partner James Anderson took 4-18, sealing the win when he bowled No. 11 Blair Tickner (8) about 15 minutes before tea as New Zealand was all out for 127.
That raised Anderson and Broad’s tally of test wickets in partnership to 1,009 in 103 matches, eclipsing the record of 1,001 previously held by Australians Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
England will now take a 1-0 series lead into the second and final test in Wellington from Friday.
“Obviously another great performance. We were very clinical with the bat and obviously very clinical with the ball,” England captain Ben Stokes said. “When you’ve got Stuart Broad and James Anderson in your bowling attack it’s obviously going to very hard for anyone with a bat in their hand.”
New Zealand had shown some signs of resistance after the collapse of its top order when allrounders Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell stuck together for almost an hour before stumps on day three.
The resistance was broken spinner when Jack Leach removed Bracewell (25) in the third over of the day Sunday and England resumed a rapid push for victory.

Anderson trapped Scott Kuggeleijn lbw next over, then had New Zealand captain Tim Southee caught first ball by Joe Root at slip with his next ball and the England players likely were setting up tee times with the end in sight.
Neil Wagner followed quickly but Mitchell and last man Blair Tickner made England wait a little longer, sticking together for almost 11 overs. Mitchell was able to post his sixth test half-century and he finished unbeaten on 57.
“All credit to England. They strategically played it pretty well,” New Zealand captain Tim Southee said. “We were on the receiving end of a couple of night periods which obviously weren’t ideal.
“That spell (by Broad) last night was obviously impressive but we knew if we got through last night there would not be many demons in the pitch today. I think it’s credit to the way they bowled under lights last night.”
Almost from the first ball of the match the difference between the teams was obvious: England constantly was on the attack, New Zealand constantly was defensive.
Even when it lost the toss, England was determined to go on the offensive and opener Ben Duckett blasted a half-century from 37 balls to put his team on the front foot. New Zealand hung in at times but never gained the upper hand.
England twice routed New Zealand’s top order under floodlights when the ball moved around more than in daylight on a relatively docile pitch. That was not by accident but design.
Stokes made the second-earliest first day declaration in test history when he ended his team’s first innings at 325-9 almost 90 minutes before stumps. In that period Anderson and Ollie Robinson dismissed Kane Williamson, Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls and left New Zealand 37-3 before it clawed back to 306 with Tom Blundell’s 138 on the second day.
England then raced to 374 in its second innings at a one-day international rate of more than five runs an over with half-centuries to Joe Root, Harry Brook and Ben Foakes. England’s lead was 393 and the innings ended again in time to send New Zealand in under floodlights for the second time.
This time Broad wrecked the New Zealand top order, bowling Devon Conway, Latham, Williamson and Blundell.
“It was all set up,” Broad said. “The way we set the whole game up, we were building towards knowing we wanted to bowl as much as possible under the lights with the harder pink ball.
“All our conversations through the day were about not so much (about) runs but the timing of when to bowl, which is a bit weird but that’s the day-night system. It’s nice to be on that side, and you’ve got to put a lot of work in to control when you can bowl at the good times.”
That control is the essence of Bazball, the doctrine of Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. Bazball is mischaracterized when it is portrayed as a policy of attack without restraint or caution. It is about taking control and dictating terms as England did when they were able to cherry pick when they wanted to bowl.
Australia's Warner ruled out of 2nd test with concussion
Australia opener David Warner has been ruled out of the second cricket test against India after sustaining a concussion while batting in the first innings.
Warner was struck on the helmet by a sharp bouncer from pace bowler Mohammed Siraj in the 10th over on Friday. He was on six not out off 30 balls at that time and continued to bat. He was eventually dismissed for 15 after combining with Usman Khawaja in a 50-run opening stand.
Warner didn’t field during the Indian innings late on Day 1 and Cricket Australia announced before the scheduled restart Saturday that the veteran opener would take no further part in the test. Matt Renshaw was called into the XI as a concussion substitute.
“Warner will now follow the graduated return to sport protocols ahead of the third test in Indore in line with Cricket Australia guidelines,” the Australian team said in a statement.
Left-handed Renshaw, who was dropped after Australia's heavy loss in the first test last week in Nagpur, will open the batting in the second innings.

Bangladesh and England have been facing each other in international cricket since 2000, and their ODI head-to-head record is a piece of evidence of the one-sided nature of their contests. Both teams have played 21 ODI matches so far, with England leading the head-to-head record with 17 wins and 4 losses against Bangladesh.

One of the earliest and most memorable matches between these two teams was the 2005 NatWest Series match, where England emerged victorious by ten wickets. In 2010, Bangladesh made their first-ever ODI victory against England in a thrilling match, where England chased down a target of 236.
Australia bowled out for 263 on Day 1, India 21-0 at stumps
Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared six wickets and pacer Mohammed Shami picked up 4-60 Friday to restrict Australia on day one of the second test.
Australia was bowled out for 263 runs with Usman Khawaja top scoring with 81 off 125 balls, including 12 fours and a six. Peter Handscomb also scored 72 not out off 142 balls, including nine fours.
India reached 21-0 at stumps with Rohit Sharma on 13 and Lokesh Rahul on 4..
Ashwin took two quick wickets before lunch to break the Australian resistance and the tourists couldn’t recover quickly enough after resuming on 94-3. Shami removed Travis Head (12) with a sharp rising delivery as the batsman was caught at slip to put Australia on 108-4. Khawaja and Handscomb then added 48 runs off 72 balls for the fifth wicket to stem the collapse.
Lokesh Rahul plucked a sensational one-handed catch to remove Khawaja as he went for a reverse sweep against Jadeja. Ashwin then got rid off Alex Carey, out for a five-ball duck, caught at slip.
Australia was down to 168-6 with two wickets in the space of seven balls, but went to the tea break without any further damage.
Handscomb then rescued the innings a second time with a 67-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Pat Cummins, who scored 33 runs. Handscomb reached 50 off 119 balls before another quick fall of wickets at the other end.
Cummins hit three fours and two sixes during his 59-ball stay before Jadeja trapped him lbw. He also dismissed Todd Murphy lbw for a four-ball duck in the same over.
Handscomb then paired with with Nathan Lyon (10) and Matthew Kuhnemann (6) to push the score past 250.
Shami bowled both tail-enders using sharp reverse swing, leaving India a few overs to bat out.
Australia had won the toss and opted to bat. India has a 1-0 lead in the four-match series, after it won the first test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs.
Comilla Victorians win record fourth BPL title
Comilla Victorians Thursday beat Sylhet Strikers by seven wickets to win a record fourth Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) title in Mirpur.
The Victorians' made a world record after winning 11 straight matches to defend their title. No team has ever won a T20 tournament title this way.
Ahead of today's final, Comilla had played three BPL finals and never suffered a defeat.
Also, before this match, Sylhet Strikers captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza had led his teams in four BPL finals and never lost a match. So, it was a battle for both the Victorians and Mashrafe to establish their place in BPL final history, which Mashrafe ultimately lost in front of a packed gallery in Mirpur.
Litton Das and Johnson Charles were the main architects of the Victorians' victory, each hitting a fifty. While Litton fell for 55, Charles remained unbeaten on 79 off 52 balls with seven fours and five sixes.
Comilla got off to a blistering start while chasing 176. Openers Litton and Sunil Narine scored 27 runs in just 2.2 overs. However, their opening stand was short-lived as Narine was dismissed by Rubel Hossain after scoring 10 runs off just five balls with a boundary and a six.
In the next over, Imrul Kayes was dismissed for just two runs. After these two quick wickets, Johnson and Litton added 70 runs off 57 balls in their third wicket partnership, which kept the Victorians' title hopes alive.
Litton eventually fell for 55 after Najmul Hossain Shanto took a remarkable catch at the boundary. In the 15th and 16th, George Linde and Luke Wood conceded only three and five runs, respectively, making the job of the Victorians much tougher.
However, during the 17th over bowled by Rubel, Charles smashed three sixes and one four; and the Victorians needed only 29 runs off the last 18 balls.
The Victorians reached the target of 176 with seven wickets and four balls to spare.
Earlier, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim, both of whom scored a fifty each, helped Sylhet Strikers post 175-7 in 20 overs against Comilla Victorians in the final of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023 at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Thursday.
Comilla's fielders were surprisingly sloppy, conceding at least 25-30 runs due to misfielding and dropped catches.
Towhid Hridoy, who hit five fifties in this BPL, made a duck. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, captain of Sylhet, came to bat at number three, as he did in the second qualifier. But this time the plan did not work for him.
So, the onus was on Shanto and Mushfiqur to rescue their team. And the duo added 79 runs off 56 balls in the third wicket stand.
Shanto hit nine fours and a six in his 45-ball 64. He was dismissed by Moeen Ali in the 13th over, leaving Sylhet at 105-3.
Mushfiqur continued to anchor the innings. He remained unbeaten on 74 off 48 balls, with five fours and three sixes. He added 29 runs with Ryan Burl (13), who was caught by Mosaddek Hossain off Mustafizur Rahman in the 16th over.
George Linde (9) hit a four before being caught by Litton Das off Mustafizur in the 18th over. Zakir Hasan (1) was run out by Moeen Ali in the penultimate over.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib joined Mushfiqur for the last four balls and remained not out for zero.
For Comilla, Mustafizur was the most successful bowler, grabbing two wickets for 31 runs in four overs. Moeen Ali, Tanvir Islam, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell took one wicket each.
BCB announces ODI squad for England series
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has revealed its lineup for the first two ODIs of the upcoming three-match series against England.
The series will begin on March 1, 2023, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The second ODI will take place at the same venue on March 3; the third and final match will be held at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram on March 6.
Towhid Hridoy, a young top-order batter from the Sylhet Strikers, is a new face in the 14-member squad. He was one of the leading run-scorers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023, with five fifties. He missed some matches due to a finger injury.
Tamim Iqbal will lead the squad, which includes experienced players such as Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, and Mustafizur Rahman.
The ODI series is part of the inaugural 2020-2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, which is a qualifying tournament for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.
Bangladesh is now ranked sixth in the Super League standings, with 120 points from 18 matches; England is ranked third with 135 points from 21 matches.
After the ODI series, a three-match T20I series between Bangladesh and England will take place from March 9 to March 14. The first T20I will be played at ZACS in Chattogram; the second and third T20Is will be played at SBNCS.
The tour was originally planned for September and October 2021 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Both cricket boards mutually agreed to reschedule it for March 2023.
