Dhaka, Sept 20 (UNB) – Scholastica Uttara made a flying start in the Polar Ice Cream 25th School Handball Tournament (Boys and Girls) crushing Motijheel Govt Girls High School by 8-0 goals in the official opening match of the girls group at Shaheed Capt (retd) M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium here on Thursday.
The winners led the first half by 5-0 goals.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Sikder inaugurated the meet at noon at a simple ceremony. Shah Masud Imam, CEO of the meet’s sponsor Dhaka Ice Cream Industries Ltd (Polar Ice Cream), was also present as special guest.
In the day’s other girls competitions, Viqarunnisa Noon School & College thrashed South Points School by 17-0 goals, Kadamtala Purba Basabo School & College beat Shaheed Ramizuddin Cantonment School & College 3-1, Scholastica Uttara defeated Scholastica Mirpur 5-1, Motijheel Govt High School beat Bangladesh International School & College 2-1, Shaheed Anwar Girls College outplayed Siddheswari Girls School 6-0, Sunnydale crushed Dhanmondi Tutorials 11-0, Shaheed Police Smriti College beat Heed Internationals 6-3, Viqarunnisa Noon School & College again crushed Kadamtala Purba Basabo School & College 11-0, Shaheed Ramizuddin Cantonment School& College beat South Points School 7-0 while Heed International beat Dhanmondi Tutorials 3-2.
A total of 36 schools -- 20 teams in the boys group and 16 teams in the girls group -- are competing in the meet.
Dhaka, Sep 20 (UNB) - Bangladesh golfer Siddikur Rahman started his mission in the purse of approximate US$ 1,355,000 Asia-Pacific Open Golf Championship Diamond Cup with carding one-over-par 72 in the first round at Musashi Country Club Sasai Course in Japan on Thursday.
The two-time Asian Tour winner Siddikur took a nine-shot more than the leader Daijiro Izumida [Japan], who took two shots lead above his two compatriots Yuki Inamori and Hiroshi Iwata and a Thai golfer Danthai Boonma.
Siddikur shared his place with 12 other golfers, which is appears to be difficult to make the cut in the tournament for him.
Dhaka, Sept 19 (UNB) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) emerged champions in Men’s Group while Bangladesh Ansar clinched title in the women’s group of the two-day 7th Services Wrestling Competition that concluded at Sheikh Russel Rollar Sketting Complex here on Wednesday.
BGB have secured five gold, three silver and two bronze medals to be the men’s champions while Ansar bagged six gold and four silver medals to the champions in women’s group.
Bangladesh Ansar finished runners-up in men’s group collecting four gold and four silver medals while Bangladesh Army became runners-up in women’s section securing four gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal.
Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Syed Shahed Reza was the chief guest at the day’s closing function and later he distributed the prizes.
Deputy Secretary General of BOA Ashiqur Rahman Miku and Asaduzzaman Kohinoor and the long serving general secretary of Bangladesh Wrestling Federation Tabiur Rahman Polwan were also present on the occasion.
Tianjin, Sep 19 (AP/UNB) — Maria Sharapova says she will end her 2018 season early, withdrawing from the China Open in Beijing, the Tianjin Open, and the Kremlin Cup in Moscow due to her recovery from a right shoulder injury.
"I will miss competing at each of these tournaments, but it is important that I allow for proper rest and recovery in the upcoming weeks," Sharapova said in a statement on the WTA website.
Sharapova, ranked 24th in the world, was the defending champion at Tianjin.
Five-time major champion Sharapova lost in the first round at Wimbledon and the fourth round at the U.S. Open.
The WTA said Sharapova expects to start her 2019 season at the Shenzhen Open, which begins Dec. 31 in the southeast China city.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Handball Federation Asaduzzaman Kohinoor disclosed the details of the meet at a press conference at the federation office on Tuesday.
Tournament Committee Chairman Golam Habib also spoke on the occasion.
Tournament sponsor will provide Tk 610,500 for the boys competition and Tk 577,600 for girls competition.
