Deaths from dengue now 1,417 with nine more reported Monday
Nine more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Monday morning, raising the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 1,417 this year.
During the period, 1,794 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, according to the DGHS.
A total of 6,662 dengue patients, including 1,807 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.

So far, the DGHS has recorded 2,81,698 dengue cases and 2,73,619 recoveries this year.
September has so far been the deadliest month for the dengue outbreak this year with 396 fatalities and 79,598 cases, according to DGHS data.

Bus carrying passengers set on fire in Dhaka’s Gulistan
A bus of ‘Bikalpa Auto Service’ was set on fire by miscreants in Dhaka’s Gulistan area today (November 06, 2023), during the second day of the ongoing 48-hour countrywide blockade called by the BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties.
Fire Service sources said that miscreants set the bus on fire at 2:05 pm in front of Bangabandhu Square Hall Market, and immediately fled the scene.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze with the help of bystanders and locals.
According to sources at Fire Service headquarters, a total of 18 arson incidents were reported across the country from 4 am on Sunday to 10 am today.

Of these, 10 arson attacks were reported in Dhaka city, said Talha Bin Jasim, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense media cell.

A candlelight vigil and prayers for those suffering will also take place, it reads.

The Festival marks National Ayurveda Day. A book on the basics of Ayurveda, by Dr. Sharlin Bharti will be launched in the book zone, along with readings by prominent authors from Writer's Block, Guba Books, UPL, and others. There will be two ayurvedic massage booths offering treatments and a discussion on the benefits of ayurveda.
Sufism is a featured element, as the theme of the festival is Illuminated Fitness which refers to the elevated state achieved through the practice of movement and meditation. There will be a Sufi whirling class, a calendar for 2024 and a journal launched by Dhaka Flow featuring poetry by Rumi, and guided meditations throughout the day, the release continued.

Attacks on police aimed at completely breaking down law and order: Sajeeb Wazed
Calling BNP-Jamaat alliance a “terrorist outfit,” Sajeeb Wazed, ICT Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, referred to attacks on law enforcers and said that these attacks are aimed at completely breaking down the law and order.
Sajeeb Wazed also came down heavily on the recent public comment by a BNP leader who “openly lauded” the brutal October 28 killing of a police officer, reportedly by BNP cadres.
From his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, he posted: “Just like a terrorist outfit, picketers of @bdbnp78 (BNP’s) student wing hurled cocktails on a police van to make their ‘ongoing blockade’ a success.”

“Days back the unruly cadres beat a police officer to death, torched a #police hospital and injured over 100 officers,” he wrote.
“Hailing the gruesome killing of the police officer, a senior #BNP leader publicly claimed ‘the killing made their event a success,’ drawing concern from civil society members for what they called ‘a glaring effort to glorify killers,’” the tweet from Sajeeb Wazed read.

A short video clip, compiling news reports on gruesome attacks on police officials, was posted with the text.
“Importantly, BNP #Jamaat cadres killed at least 90 cops during countrywide arson and blockade, spanned over eight months, between 2013 and 2015,” Sajeeb Wazed wrote.

48-hour blockade: Two buses set ablaze in Gazipur
Two buses were set on fire on Sunday night and early Monday in Gazipur's Bilaspur and Safipur areas amid the 48-hour road, rail and waterway blockade enforced by the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and their allies.
A stationary bus of Nirapad Paribahan was set on fire by unidentified miscreants at Bottola of Bilaspur last night, said Rakibul Hasan, inspector of Gazipur Fire Service.

On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze.
In another incident, miscreants torched a bus on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Safipur area of Kaliakair upazila early Monday.
When the bus reached the Safipur area, some arsonists boarded the slow moving vehicle, set fire after pouring petrol on it and ran away, said the inspector.
A limited number of long-distance buses are plying the Gazipur-Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways since morning on the second day of the blockade. However, the movement of inter-district buses, light vehicles is quite normal.
People of different professions are traveling to their destinations by riding various vehicles including rickshaws and auto-rickshaws.

Markets, shops and financial institutions remained open.
Additional police forces have been deployed at various points including Chandra, Chandna intersection, Bhogra bypass road areas.
RAB and BGB members are patrolling various roads and highways to keep the industrial environment normal.
21 arson incidents reported in 38 hrs till Monday evening: Fire Service
A total of 21 arson incidents were reported across Bangladesh from 4:00 am on Sunday (November 05, 2023) to 6:00 pm on Monday, (November 06, 2023), according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Of these, 12 arson attacks were reported in Dhaka City Corporation areas, said Talha Bin Jasim, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense media cell on Monday.

The fire official said a total of 16 incidents of arson were reported in Dhaka division, and four in Chattogram division.
A total of 16 buses, two trucks, one private car, one CNG-run autorickshaw, and one human hauler were torched during this period.

Forty-one units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, along with 242 firefighters, were engaged to extinguish the blazes, added the fire officer.
228 BGB platoons deployed to beef up security across the country amid BNP-Jamaat's 48hr blockade
A total of 228 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across Bangladesh to maintain law and order as the 48-hour countrywide blockade called by the BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties is underway.
Shariful Islam, public relations officer (PRO) at BGB headquarters, confirmed the development this morning.
On Sunday, the first day of the 48-hour blockade, 27 BGB platoons were deployed in Dhaka and adjoining districts to avoid any untoward incidents.
Like the first spell of the blockade, the members of the frontier battalion have been performing their duties alongside the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Ansar to ensure public safety and security in Dhaka and other parts of the country.

In addition, 460 patrol teams were deployed across the country to maintain law and order, said Imran Khan, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) at the media wing of the elite force.

Day 2 of 48hr countrywide blockade called by BNP, Jamaat underway
The second day of the countrywide 48-hour blockade, called by BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties, is underway today with some incidents of violence and arson.
After the three-day countrywide blockade, another road, rail and waterways blockade started at 6 am yesterday. It will end at 6 am tomorrow.
The presence of public transport was relatively thin on Dhaka roads amid tension and fear of violence.

Office-goers, students and other commuters were seen struggling to find buses due to the shortage of public transport.
Miscreants set buses on fire in Dhaka’s Mirpur and Bangla Motor areas yesterday evening which created panic among people.
In Chattogram, two buses were burnt by unidentified miscreants in Katghar and Oxygen Mor areas yesterday during the blockade.
With this, a total of 17 arson incidents were reported across the country from 7 pm on Saturday to 11 pm last night, Fire Service has said.

Police and other law enforcement agencies have already alerted their units to increase vigilance and beef up security across the country.
Police have also taken up positions and set up checkpoints at the entry points and all major locations in Dhaka.
Pausing their protest for two days, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday announced that his party would enforce a 48-hour countrywide blockade beginning from Sunday morning.
Vehicles of newspapers or media, ambulances, and vehicles transporting oxygen cylinders and medicines will remain out of the purview of the blockade.
PM Hasina performs Umrah in Mecca
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina performed holy Umrah in Mecca on Monday morning.
The prime minister along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana performed Umrah and offered Salah at the holy mosque of Masjid Al Haram.

They prayed for the continued peace, prosperity and progress of the Muslim Ummah including Bangladesh and its people.

20 injured as Daffodil University students clash with locals in Savar
At least 20 people were injured after clashes erupted between Daffodil International University students and locals in Savar’s Ashulia Union on Sunday.
A tense situation is prevailing in the area following the incident.
Locals claimed that Hasibul Hasan Antar, a student of Daffodil International University, was killed by another student Rahat and his men a few days ago.
But students of Daffodil vandalised and looted more than 150 shops in Akram Bazar area of Birulia in Savar on Friday night demanding arrest of the killers.
Later, local people of Changaon area of Ashulia held a discussion for the safety of life and property today afternoon.
But in the night, the students vandalised more than 200 shops and houses in Changao area with sticks and sharp weapons hearing the news of meeting, leaving at least 20 people injured.
Deepak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said the situation is calm at present.
