Livestock Ministry sells fish worth Tk 7.73 core in a day
The Fisheries and Livestock Ministry said it sold 421,000kg fish through mobile stalls across the country on Saturday alone.
“The fish is worth Tk 7.73 crore,” said a handout from the Ministry.
It said the initiative to sell goods received much appreciation from the beneficiaries.
According to the ministry, they took the initiative for selling milk, egg, fish and poultry goods produced by marginal farmers and entrepreneurs in a bid to help them amid the ongoing shutdown.
Between April 25 and May 1, mobile stalls sold milk, eggs and poultry chicken worth Tk 176.27 crore.
Earlier on April 22, the ministry directed the officials of Fisheries Department and Department of Livestock Services at district and upazila levels to materialise the project.
The government has so far reported 175 deaths and 8,790 coronavirus cases in Bangladesh.
As the number of new cases continues to rise, the government decided to extend the ongoing holiday till May 16.
Get ready to resume domestic flights: CAAB to airlines
Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on Saturday directed all the airlines to take preparations for resuming domestic flights from May 8.
“Permission to resume domestic flights from May 8 will be given if the coronavirus situation improves,” CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman told UNB.
“There has been no final decision yet,” he said adding all the airlines and airports have been directed to get ready.
40 million people get govt relief so far
The government has so far provided relief items to some 40 million people across the country with a view to easing their sufferings and miseries during the coronavirus crisis.
US joins Bangladesh to highlight importance of free expression
The United States has joined countries around the world, including Bangladesh, to reaffirm the universal right of free expression and the essential role press freedom plays in protecting democracy and keeping citizens informed and safe.
"The work of journalists, photojournalists, and media outlets often comes with sacrifice, including here in Bangladesh," said US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller in a statement on Saturday marking the World Press Freedom Day that falls on May 3.
“This year, we pay special tribute to those journalists who work tirelessly, often under stressful and dangerous conditions, to inform the public about the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Ambassador Miller said they honour the journalists who have fallen ill from COVID-19 and their selfless dedication to public service.
"We honor the life of Humayan Kabir Khokon, a senior journalist who worked until the day of his death and posthumously tested positive for the virus. We send our sincere condolences to Khokon’s family," said the US Ambassador.
Ambassador Miller said they honour all journalists, everywhere, who have sacrificed their lives, freedom and personal wellbeing in pursuit of truth and justice.
