UN Secretary General lauds Sheikh Hasina's leadership
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for championing a number of UN-led global processes and commended her leadership.
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud met him Sunday afternoon on the sidelines of the third South Summit in Kampala, Uganda.
During the meeting, the secretary general congratulated Hasina and appreciated Bangladesh’s vital role in the call for reforming global financial architecture, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, FM Hasan commended the UN chief for his bold and crucial role with regard to the war in Gaza.
He also requested the Antonio Guterres to keep the Rohingya issue at the top of UN agenda.
Noting that 2024 marks the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s membership at the UN, Hasan Mahmud underscored the need for celebrating this in a befitting manner.
He also invited Guterres to Bangladesh at the latter’s convenience.
Hasan briefed the secretary general on the recently held free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh with people’s participation.
The foreign minister led the Bangladesh delegation to the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the third South Summit of the G-77 and China in Kampala, Uganda.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN Muhammad A Muhith and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Kenya and Uganda Tareque Muhammad among others are accompanying the minister.
Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs meets Hasan Mahmud in Kampala
Waleed El Khereiji, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia, has met Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud in Kampala, Uganda and discussed issues of mutual interest.
El Khereiji congratulated Dr Mahmud for assuming his new role as Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.

The two dignitaries discussed various issues of mutual interest including enhancing trade, investment and connectivity between the two brotherly nations.
The Foreign Minister led the Bangladesh delegation to the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud has met Riyad al-Maliki, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, on the sidelines of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Kampala, Uganda.
Palestine Foreign Minister fondly recalled Bangabandhu’s unflinching support for the Palestine cause and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for carrying forward his legacy and firmly standing by the people of Palestine at this critical moment, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.

British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Cameron has praised Bangladesh for hosting Rohingyas despite its own challenges and mentioned that every country should take responsibility of the refugees.
“What we would say is that Bangladesh should be praised for the role that it is playing in taking quite so many refugees," he said during a recent debate at the UK Parliament.

Obviously, Cameron said, there are huge pressures—there are worries about conditions in the camps and whether there is enough food—but, ultimately, Bangladesh is looking after a million people.
"And that is why we are supporting it to the extent that we are. Every country should take its responsibilities towards refugees very seriously," he said.
NAM Summit: Hasan Mahmud to raise Rohingya issue with Myanmar
Snce 2017, the UK provided more than £373 million in funding for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and more than £30 million for Rohingya and other Muslim minorities in Myanmar.
In December, at the Global Refugee Forum, we announced an additional £7 million for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and for the Myanmar humanitarian crisis.

The UK also reiterated their commitment to finding a long-term solution to the crisis, including the safe, voluntary and dignified return of the Rohingya to Myanmar when conditions there allow.

Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday (January 20, 2024) said Bangladesh-India relations are growing from strength to strength.
"Look forward to receiving him (Dr Hasan Mahmud) in Delhi soon," he said as he met his Bangladesh counterpart Dr Hasan Mahmud on the sidelines of the 19th NAM Summit.
Jaishankar said he is glad to meet with his new Bangladesh counterpart, Hasan Mahmud in Kampala, Uganda.
"Congratulated him on his appointment and wished him all success," said the Indian External Affairs Minister.
Both the ministers discussed various issues of mutual interests and ways to carry forward the existing excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They also discussed the upcoming visit of Bangladesh Foreign Minister to New Delhi.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN Muhammad A Muhith and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Kenya and Uganda, among others, are accompanying the Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud is scheduled to leave for New Delhi, India on February 7 – the first bilateral visit by the minister after his appointment – to further strengthen Bangladesh-India relations.
“It’s likely to be a three-day visit,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 18, noting that the agenda of the visit is yet to be finalised.
The Foreign Minister said he will be visiting the country at the invitation of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.
Asked whether he will have a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit, Mahmud said, “It is too early to say.”
Jaishankar, earlier, invited his Bangladesh counterpart Dr Hasan Mahmud to visit New Delhi at a mutually convenient time.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma extended the invitation on behalf of the Indian External Affairs Minister on Monday.
The Foreign Minister accepted the invitation and told him that he would visit Delhi soon.

He referred to the statement of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the NAM Summit in Algiers in 1973.
The Foreign Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is carrying forward Bangabandhu’s legacy of peace, development, and human rights with courage and determination.
Mahmud reiterated Bangladesh’s unwavering support to the oppressed people of Palestine and demanded justice for them.
FM Hasan Mahmud to deliver national statement at NAM Summit
Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud joined the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit on Friday.
He will deliver Bangladesh's national statement as the lead of delegation on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the summit.
The minister is also expected to have bilateral meetings with a good number of his counterparts.
He is also expected to have courtesy meetings with the UN Secretary-General and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni inaugurated it as the new Chair of the Movement.
The inaugural ceremony of the summit was also addressed by the President of Azerbaijan, the outgoing Chair of the NAM, the President of the General Assembly, the Vice President Cuba as the Chair of the Group of 77 and China and the representatives of different regional groups.
The Foreign Minister also joined the State Banquet hosted by the President of Uganda.
Hasan Mahmud is accompanied by Masud Bin Momen, the Foreign Secretary, who led Bangladesh delegation to the ministerial meeting and the Senior Official meetings of the NAM, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, and Ambassador Tareque Muhammad, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Kenya and concurrently accredited to Uganda.
FM Hasan Mahmud to lead Bangladesh delegation at South Summit in Uganda
After attending the 19th NAM Summit in the Ugandan capital city Kampala, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud will lead the Bangladesh delegation at the "South Summit" which will be held with the theme “Leaving No One Behind.”
The third South Summit, scheduled to begin on January 21, looks to bring a new dynamic to the cooperation among its 134 Member States of the Group of 77 in a more competitive world.
The Foreign Minister reached the Ugandan capital on Friday afternoon, said a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and Bangladesh envoys to the UN and Kenya are also in Uganda to attend the NAM Summit and South Summit.
The South Summit aims at boosting South-South cooperation including in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and digital economy. In Kampala, the 134 Member States will reiterate the message of solidarity, unity, and complementarity of the South and speak with a unified voice to achieve their common goals and objectives.
By hosting the Third South Summit, the Republic of Uganda, under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurates a new agenda for a prosperous, united and stronger South.
The Foreign Minister is scheduled to leave the Ugandan capital for Dhaka on January 22.
The 19th NAM Summit themed: “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”, will continue till January 20 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo Convention Centre.
Established in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) – which shares 44 of its 120 members with the Commonwealth – is a grouping of mostly developing countries working together to advance shared interests.
At the ministerial level meeting, Bangladesh called for greater unity and solidarity among the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member-States to ensure shared global prosperity.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, who led the Bangladesh delegation at the ministerial-level meeting, referred to the statement of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the NAM Summit in Algiers in 1973 where Bangabandhu emphasised the principles of self-reliance and effective economic cooperation among the non-aligned countries which is still relevant after 50 years.
The two-day ministerial meeting on NAM ended on January 18 after finalising the outcome document, Kampala Declaration and declaration on Palestine which are expected to be adopted in the 19th NAM Summit scheduled to be held on January 19-20.
The foreign secretary also highlighted the progresses achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and mentioned that the people of Bangladesh re-elected her through a "free, fair, peaceful and participatory" election, to continue her march towards development and prosperity.
He also called for establishing effective mechanisms inside the NAM to help the NAM countries from LDC graduation and also to deal with the aftermath of the graduation.
The foreign secretary also attended the meeting of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine and reiterated Bangladesh’s unequivocal support for the legitimate right and just struggle of the Palestinian people for their freedom from Israeli occupation and oppression.
He also urged the members of the Movement to use all tools available to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
UN chief congratulates PM Hasina, pledges to work with her govt
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her re-election as Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
"The United Nations remains committed to working with your government, including through the United Nations Country Team, for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh," he said in a message to PM Hasina.
The United Nations deeply values its partnership with Bangladesh, including its major contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations, the generosity towards Rohingya refugees and efforts towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, Guterres said.
"I am also appreciative of your participation in the Global Crisis Response Group and trust that I can continue to count on your support in our ambition to address growing global challenges, including the fight against climate change and the pressing need to reform the international financial architecture," said the UN chief.
