Police arrest Rab member, 2 others for alleged abduction attempt of businessman
Police arrested three people, including a member of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), in the city on Saturday on charge of trying to abduct a travel agency businessman on Mohakhali flyover on Friday night.
Police also seized a toy pistol, one handcuff, one black jacket of Rab, and one private car from their possessions.
The arrestees were identified as Al Momen, 26, a member of Rab-1 battalion, Rab's informant Arain Ahmed Joy, 23, and Farhad Hossain, 22.
Shahidul, the victim, filed a case accusing the four people including the Rab member with Banani Police Station.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Banani Police Station Nur-e-Azam Mia said that a case was filed by one Shahidul, a travel agency businessman, accusing four people in connection with Friday midnight’s abduction attempt.
Among the arrestees, Joy was arrested from the spot Friday midnight, while Rab member Momen and his accomplice Farhad Hossain were arrested later.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), The incident took place around 2:15 am on Friday night. Travel agency trader Shahidul along with his nephew named Md Riaj was returning to his home in Singair of Manikganj from the Airport area by a rented private car after meeting with one of his friends named Tarik late at night. When they were passing through Mohakhali flyover, suddenly the arrestees from another private car intercepted their car and tried to abduct them at gunpoint.
As they (Shahidul and Joy) cried out for help, a journalist team of a private satellite channel and several people, who were crossing the flyover, came forward to help them. At one stage, a police member, who was returning after completion of his duty from the Gulshan area, also joined to help them.
At one stage, sensing danger, the Rab member along with two others, fled the scene, but Rab’s informant Joy was detained from the spot and he was then handed over to Banani Police Station. Police also recovered a toy pistol from his possession.
Sherpur: Farmer's body with injuries marks found in pile of logs
The body of a 60-year-old farmer was found with injury marks from sharp weapons in a pile of logs in Sherpur Sadar upazila Friday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Rafiq Miah from Bajitkhila union of the upazila.
The farmers' family members said there had been a long-running feud between them and their neighbours – Kena, Omed Ali and Aungur Miah – over land.

Rafiq left his house Thursday midnight and did not return, they said.
Bachhir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said: "On information, we rushed to the spot and recovered the body with injury marks from sharp weapons."
The body has been sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem, he said. "We will take action after we find out the actual cause of death."
HC summons DGME DG for failure to present documents of a student
The High Court (HC) on Thursday summoned the director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) on January 24 for his failure to present documents of a medical student last year.
An HC bench of Justice Jafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after hearing a petition in this regard, said the plaintiff’s lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir.
The HC asked DG Tito Mia to explain his failure to present with the documents and files in person, he said.
One Shariful Islam got admitted at Chattogram BGC Trust Medical College in 2021 but Bangladesh Medical College and Dental Council authority didn’t register his roll number due to an unknown reason.
Being aggrieved, the student filed a writ petition at the HC.
After hearing, an HC bench asked the DG to present main documents and other papers related to admission in November last year.
As he failed to do so, the HC again on Thursday asked the DG to present with the documents on January 24.

BAF No. 10 Squadron Commanders' Course certificate award ceremony held
Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Thursday held the certificate award ceremony of the No. 10 Squadron Commanders' Course.
Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations) Air Vice Marshal AHM Fazlul Haque distributed certificates among the graduating officers at the Command and Staff Training Institute (CSTI) in Dhaka.
Nine officers from BAF took the course. The course is designed to provide management and leadership training to the potential squadron commanders of BAF.
Since the inception of the Squadron Commanders' Course in 2009, CSTI has been tasked to prepare future leaders of Bangladesh Armed Forces.
6 Awami League activists get life term for killing Shibir leader in Kushtia
A Kushtia court on Thursday sentenced six Awami League activists to life term imprisonment in a case over killing an Islamai Chattra Shibir leader around 11 years back.
Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Md Tajul Islam also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, in default, they will have to serve one more year imprisonment, Advocate Anup Kumar Nandy, public prosecutor of the court, said.

The court also acquitted 29 people from the case as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
The convicts are Abdullah, Rubel, Kashem, Ruhul Amin, and two brothers-Nazrul and Farid, are from Phanty village under Kumarkhali upazila.
All the convicts except Rubel were present during the delivery of the judgment.
According to the case statement, all the accused in a planned way stabbed to death Shibir leader Abdullah Al Manju over previous enmity in Chairman Para of the upazila on April 13, 2012.

Later, his father Abdul Razzak filed a case in this regard.
The investigation officer of the case Nasir Uddin pressed charge sheets against the accused on April 30, 2015.
60 arrested in DMP’s anti-narcotics drive
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in separate drives arrested 60 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in the capital in 24 hours till 6 am on Thursday.
During the drives, 4,955 contraband yaba pills, 580 grams of heroin, 75 bottles of contraband Phensidyle and 56.415 kg of cannabis were recovered from the possessions of the arrestees.

As part of the DMP’s regular anti-drug drive, Detective Branch (DB) and local police stations raided on various areas in the capital from Wednesday 6 am to 6 am on Thursday and recovered the drugs.
A total of 45 cases were registered with local police stations against the arrested people under the Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka court orders issuing notice asking Tarique, Zubaida to appear before it
A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the authorities concerned to publish a notice in newspapers asking BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr Zubaida to appear before the court in a graft case filed by anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Asaduzzaman passed the order.
The court also ordered the authorities to submit a report in this regard on February 6.

On January 5, the same court asked police to confiscate all assets of Tarique and Zubaida.
Court Inspector of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Aminul Islam said police submitted a report on the confiscation of their property, mentioning that no property has been found in their permanent address.
On November 1 last year, the court issued arrest warrants against Tarique and Zubaida after accepting charges against them.
According to the case statement, the ACC filed the case at Kafrul Police Station on September 26, 2007, against Tarique, his wife, and mother-in-law Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu for amassing wealth of around Tk4.82 crore beyond their known sources of income and for concealing information on wealth.
A charge sheet was submitted to the court against them in 2008.

Later, the High Court issued a rule suspending the proceedings on the application of Zubaida Rahman.
On April 12 in 2018, the High Court gave its judgment dismissing the rule issued to dismiss the case. At the same time, Zubaida Rahman was ordered to surrender before the court within eight weeks.
Zubaida then filed a leave to appeal in the Appellate Division against the judgment of the High Court.
Lawyers said Zubaida, now living in the UK, is a fugitive in the case and will now have to go to jail after surrender. She will then be able to appeal for bail.

The High Court (HC) on Thursday issued a rule questioning why the provision of baring government officials from contesting the national election until three years passed after retirement is not unconstitutional.
The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah issued this rule after hearing the writ petition filed by Brigadier General(Retd) Md Shamim Kamal.

Barrister Hasan MS Azim appeared for the writ petitioner in the court.
Brigadier General(Retd) Md Shamim Kamal from Lalmonirhat filed the writ petition on January 15 challenging the provision of Article 12(1) (F) of the Representation of the People's Order 1972 which does not allow military and civilian government officials to contest the national elections until they complete three years of retirement.
Death in police custody: 2 cops withdrawn in Gazipur
Two policemen of Gazipur Metropolitan Police were withdrawn from their duty on Wednesday over the death of a trader in police custody.
The policemen are Mahbub and Nurul Islam, both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman told UNB.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain has been formed to investigate this incident, he added.
Local people said a team of police from Bason Police Station arrested four people from Bhogra bypass area on January 14 on charges of gambling.
Later, police released three of them except Rabiul Islam, 40, a resident of Peyara Bagan in Gazipur city.

On Tuesday night, police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature of his wife on a white paper, they said.
Soon after that, Rabiul’s wife came to know that Rabiul died in the night.

School headmistress arrested for allegedly selling new books in Habiganj; landed in jail
A headmistress of a government primary school has been arrested on charges of selling new books meant for distribution for free among students.
Ayesha Akter, the accused headmistress at Kadamtali Government Primary School in Shayestaganj upazila of the district, was sent to jail in a case over the recovery of the books on Wednesday.
Murshed Alam, inspector (investigation) of Shayestaganj police station, said a total of 394 books of several classes were recovered from a three-wheeler van in front of a fuel station in the upazila on Tuesday afternoon.

During the interrogation, the van driver Chhaid Hossain said that the headmistress gave him the books for selling, he said.
Later, a team of police led by Sub-Inspector Saidul Islam conducted a drive in the headmistress’s house and found 94 more books wrapped in a plastic sack.
During the primary questioning, the accused headmistress said she collected 752 books from a reserved godown of Railway Colony Government Primary School to distribute among students on December 27 last year.
After distributing some books, she hoarded the rest of the books on her own to sell on the market, the inspector said.
Upazila Education Officer Mohammad Ali filed a case accusing the headmistress in this connection.
