Shibir activist held in Chandpur for threatening to kill PM
Police have arrested an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir from Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur allegedly for threatening to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on a Facebook Live video.
The arrestee was identified as Md Shihabuddin, a resident of the upazila.
"He is an active member of Islami Chhatra Shibir and a madrasa student," Md Jobaer Sayed, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj police station disclosed at a press briefing on Friday (October 21) at noon.
A case was registered against Shihabuddin under the Digital Security Act and he was sent to jail, added the OC.
Earlier, Shihabuddin was arrested from the upazila on Thursday night, OC Jobaer said.
Anti-militancy drive in hills: 7 Jama'atul Ansar members, 3 separatists held
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) claimed to have arrested seven members of new militant outfit Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya and three of a separatist organisation from Bandarban and Rangamati Thursday night.
During the operation by RAB against suspected militants in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), a large number of weapons and ammunition were also seized, ASP Imran Khan of RAB Headquarters (media wing), said.
On October 17, the government announced a ban on tourists travelling to the country's mountainous region bordering India and Myanmar after launching the anti-militancy operation of RAB and Bangladesh Army.

Multiple separatist groups in the CHT may have been harbouring members of Jama'atul Ansar and allowing them to use the area to train recruits.
RAB said this on October 10 after arresting 12 suspected members of the new militant outfit, formed by former members of banned Islamist groups Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh and Ansar Al Islam.
ACC okays chargesheet against 5 ex-NSU trustees, 4 others
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday approved a chargesheet against nine people including five former members of the board of trustees of North-South University (NSU) for laundering around Tk 304 crore.
ACC Secretary Mahbub Hossain said the investigation officer of the case and director of ACC’s investigation and inquiry cell will submit the chargesheet before the court.
The accused are - NSU trustee board chairman Azim Uddin Ahmed, members- Benajir Ahmed, MA Kashem, Rehana Rahman, Mohammed Shajahan, Ashaloy Housing and Developers Amin managing director Md Hilaly, its chairman Omar Faruk and directors- Anwara Begum and Syed AK Haque.
On May 5, the ACC filed the case against the NSU trustees and others on charges of embezzling money in the name of buying land for the campus and money laundering.
According to the Private University Act, 2010, the board of trustees is the highest governing body of a private university like North South University. According to the Memorandum of Association and Articles (Rules and Regulations) of the University, the university is a charitable, welfare oriented, non-commercial and non-profit educational institution.
The case stated that over 9,088 decimal land was bought in the name of campus development of NSU through the consent of some members of the board of trustees bypassing the approval of the university syndicate, the University Grants Commission, and the Ministry of Education.
They later withdrew cash from the buyer through cheques in their own names and kept FDR in their own names. Later, they themselves embezzled the FDR money.
They unjustly benefited themselves by committing illegal activities, criminal misconduct through misuse of power and embezzling university and government funds, according to the case statement.
In carrying out such illegal activities, they have committed a punishable offence by resorting to fraud and forgery and exchanging commissions.
Police get 999 call from ‘thief’ for help!
Usually, people seek help when calling National Emergency Service 999. A “thief” in Barishal calling 999, however, makes for an interesting story.
Police today said they received a call from a “thief” who wanted to be “saved from a possible mob beating”, as he was stuck inside a shop in Barishal town.
Yeasin Khan (41), entered a shop in the AR Khan Bazar area of Sadar Upazila and got stuck inside the shop on Wednesday morning after sensing the presence of people in the market, said Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Metropolitan Bandar Police Station.

The man called 999 for help, fearing that he might be beaten up by the locals if caught, the OC added.
When police asked him why he was not coming out of the shop, Yeasin told them that it took him a long time to pack “the stolen goods” and when he was done, it was already morning and people started arriving at the market.
“In this condition, if he came out, he would be beaten up by a mob,” said OC Asaduzzaman.

Shop owner Jhantu said he didn’t realize that a thief broke into his shop.
Later, police arrested Yeasin, the thief who called 999 National Emergency Service, from the spot after rescuing him from the shop, said the OC.
Graft case: Samrat’s bail extended till Nov 8
A court in Dhaka on Thursday extended the bail of expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat till November 8 in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Special Judge's Court-6 judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman passed the order after hearing a petition in this regard.
Besides, the court fixed November 8 for hearing the charges in the case, Afroza Shahanaz Parvin Hira, counsel for the accused, said. "Samrat was present in the court during the hearing."
On August 22, the same court granted ad-interim bail to Samrat considering his health condition.
However, the court, in its order, asked Samrat to submit his passport while furnishing his bail bond.

Samrat was freed following the bail order. He has been undertaking treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since then.
ACC deputy director Md Jahangir Alam filed a case against him for amassing wealth over Tk 3 crore on November 12, 2019.
The anti-corruption watchdog submitted a chargesheet against him on November 26, 2020.
DMP Commissioner Shafiqul to go on retirement on October 30
A gazette notification in this regard was issued by the Home Ministry's Public Security Division on Wednesday.
He will be on post-retirement leave (PRL) from October 30 this year to October 29 next year.
He will be entitled to retirement and post-retirement leave benefits as per government rules, it added.
The tenure of DMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam was extended for another year in 2021. On September 13, 2019 he took the responsibility as 34th Commissioner of DMP.

He began his career in 1989 as Assistant Superintendent of Police as the 8th Bangladesh Civil Service cadre (police).
Earlier he served as Additional Inspector General of Police in the Crime Investigation Bureau of Bangladesh police.
Drug peddler held with 168 bottles of foreign liquor in Gulshan
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) claimed to have arrested a drug peddler of an organised gang with 168 bottles of foreign liquor from the capital's Gulshan area on Wednesday night.
The arrestee has been identified as Md Nayon Hasan, 44, son of late Abudur Rashid of Sanmandhi village in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.
Lieutenant Colonel Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed, commandant of Rab-3, said, on information, they conducted a drive in the Gulshan area and arrested him, and also seized the foreign liquor from his possession.
Besides, a microbus used in drug peddling was also seized in this connection, he said.

"During primary interrogation, the arrestee confessed that he had long been involved in drug peddling. Several cases were filed against him at police stations in Narayanganj, Munishiganj and the capital," the Rab officer said.
A process is under way to file a case against him at the concerned police station, he added.
‘Those involved in unethical allocation of hall seats ruining AL’s image, will face action’
Obaidul Quader, Road Transport and Bridges Minister and General secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, has warned those involved in running a trade on university admissions and hall seat allocation.
“List is being prepared of those involved in running a trade on university admission, seat allocation, political rooms in residential halls, and they will not be spared. They are ruining the image of Awami League,” he said yesterday at a discussion titled ‘Spark of dreams and potentials - Sheikh Russel’ at the University Laboratory School and College premises organised by the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University.
The discussion was organized to mark the 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. At the meeting, scholarships and special grants were also provided to students of the school Sheikh Russel went to.
Obaidul Quader also warned those who are doing “misdeeds” in the name of Awami League.
“Those committing misdeeds will not get Awami League nomination in the next election. This is a clear directive from the leader. Mend your ways.”
Regarding BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's reaction to the Prime Minister's statement on a possible food shortage, Quader said, while highlighting the global situation, the Prime Minister said that there is a possibility of famine in the future. The IMF and the World Bank predicted it and Sheikh Hasina just referred to that.
“What wrong did he see here? Did anyone die in Bangladesh?” — he questioned.
“We have a little oil shortage. We’re trying to overcome it. We also have an energy cooperation agreement with Brunei,” he said.

4 cops sued for allegedly threatening to kill man in crossfire in Ctg
A case was filed on Wednesday against six people, including four policemen, for allegedly harassing and threatening to kill a man in crossfire when he tried to recover his money saved with an NGO in Chattogram.
Kamrul Islam, assistant ward master of Agrabad Ma-O-Shishu Hospital, filed the case with the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam, accusing them of threatening to kill him in crossfire.
Kamrul’s lawyer Jewel Das said his client filed the case with the magistrate court after getting no remedy from the higher police authorities as he sent his complaints in writing to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police in 2019.
Kamrul said that Chattogram Bandar police station’s former OC Mohiuddin Mahmud, former sub-inspectors Rabiul Islam and KM Jannat Sajal, city DB’s former sub-inspector Mangal Bikash Chakma and Bandar area’s residents Jamal Farazi and Milon Farazi had threatened him to kill in crossfire on false charges of extortion.
Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam accepted the case and asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate it.
According to the case statement, Kamrul and some 35 others opened account with NGO ‘Disha Foundation’ to save money on monthly basis in the Bandar area in 2011.
Later, the NGO authorities closed its office without paying the money in 2016. Kamrul said all the accused had harassed him when he attempted to get his money back.
Kamrul said the accused implicated him in a false case after he filed a case against them for harassment. He was subsequently freed on bail after passing four days in prison involving the case.
Man gets death sentence for killing and raping girl in Chattogram
A court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to death for killing a young girl after raping her four years ago.
Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trail Tribunal Judge Halim Ullah Chowdhury also fined defendant Siraj Munna, a resident of Hathazari upazila in Chattogram, Tk 1 lakh, said Riad Uddin, a counsel of the plaintiff.
The court, however, acquitted the parents--Shahjahan Siraj and Nigar Sultana—as the allegations against them could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
Lawyer Riad Uddin said they would appeal the verdict as he was not happy with the acquittal.
According to the case statement, Munna kidnapped the girl who was a Grade-VIII student of Hathazari Girls’ High School and College on September 14, 2018. Both lived in the same building in Shahjalal Para of the upazila.

Munna strangled the girl to death after raping her as she resisted and screamed.
Police arrested Munna while trying to flee from the area on September 16 that year.
Later, the victim’s elder brother filed a case against Munna ad his parents.
Police pressed charges against them on July 10, 2019.
