Court cancels arrest warrant issued for cricketer Al-Amin
A Dhaka court on Wednesday canceled the arrest warrant issued for Bangladesh cricketer Al-Amin Hossain in a domestic violence case filed by his wife.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury passed the order following a reconsideration petition against the arrest warrant.
The court also fixed October 16 for the next hearing, asking both sides to appear before the court.
Earlier in the day, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain issued the warrant as the pacer did not appear before the court for a hearing in the case.
Al-Amin couldn’t appear before the court today as he is in Khulna now to play four-day National Cricket League (NCL) that started on Monday, said his counsel Md Abdur Rahman Sumon.
So Al-Amin’s counsel filed the reconsideration petition against the arrest warrant.
During the hearing, Shamsuzzaman, counsel of Al-Amin's wife Israt, claimed that his client had no idea about the divorce claim by the accused.
On October 6, Al-Amin submitted an affidavit to the court, claiming he divorced Israt on August 25.
Al-Amin was, in fact, granted bail in the case till October 6 only by Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shafi Uddin, on a bond of Tk 5,000, on September 27. The case was filed by his wife on September 7.
Judge Shafi Uddin of the court took the case into cognizance and had asked Al-Amin to appear before the court.
According to the case statement, Al-Amin married Israt on December 26, 2012, and his wife subsequently gave birth to two sons.
Israt also claimed that Al-Amin did not provide her maintenance and educational expenses for the two sons for many days, it said.
Al-Amin demanded Tk 20 lakh as dowry from his wife and used to beat her as she had refused to pay the amount. He also drove her out of the house with their two children on August 25, it added.
On September 1, Israt lodged a complaint with Mirpur Model police against him over torturing her for dowry. Later, police registered a case.
On September 3, Al Amin sent a message to Israt that he will not provide her maintenance and divorced her.
On September 6, the High Court granted Al-Amin anticipatory bail for eight weeks in the case over the torture of his wife for dowry.
13 muggers held in Dhaka
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has detained 13muggers gang from different areas of the capital.
A team of Rab-3 detained the muggers after conducting simultaneous drives in Shahjahanpur, Motijheel and Paltan areas on Tuesday night, said Commanding Officer of RAB-3, Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed.
The elite force also seized sharp weapons and a mobile phone from their possession.
During primary questioning, the alleged gang members said they used to mug people in these areas brandishing sharp weapons.
Legal steps have been taken against the detainees, the officer added.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun adorned with IGP Rank Badge
Newly appointed Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was adorned with the IGP Rank Badge on Wednesday.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Senior Secretary of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Md. Akhtar Hossain adorned the Rank Badge to the new IGP in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Al-Mamun took over as the IGP on September 30 last, replacing immediate past IGP Benazir Ahmed who went on retirement the same day.
He had been serving as the Director General of Elite Force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) since April 2022 before becoming the country’s police chief.
Born in Sunamganj in 1964, he completed his graduation and post-graduation in Sociology from Chittagong University. He joined Bangladesh Police as an assistant superintendent of police in 1989.
Al-Mamun also served as the Superintendent of Police in Nilphamari district, deputy commissioner in Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Deputy Inspector General in Mymensingh and Dhaka Range and Police Headquarters.
Photojournalist Aftab murder case: HC upholds death penalty for 5 convicts
The High Court on Wednesday upheld the death penalty for the five men and life imprisonment for another person convicted of killing acclaimed photojournalist Aftab Ahmed in 2013.
A division bench of justices Jahangir Hossain and Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after hearing their appeal petitions.
Advocates SM Shahjahan, Helal Uddin Molla and Shafiqul Islam stood for the petitioners, while deputy attorney general Samira Taranum Rabeya Miti represented the state.
On March 28, 2017, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 judge Abdur Rahman Sardar sentenced the five men to death and another to life imprisonment for the murder of Aftab.
The condemned convicts are Billal Hossain Kislu, Habib Hawladar, Raju Munshi, Russel and driver Humayun Kabir Molla. Of them, Raju Munshi and Russel were tried in absentia.
The lifer has identified as Sabuj Khan. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 on him.

On December 25, 2013, Aftab of Daily Ittefaq, an Ekushey Padak recipient, was found dead at his West Rampura Wapda Road residence. He was 69.
Driver Humayun, Habib and Billal subsequently made a confessional statement before the court that the convicts had strangled the victim to death while committing robbery in his house.
Billal looted Tk 72,000 from his residence and shared the money with the others involved in the killing, according to police.
Aftab received the coveted Ekushey Padak in 2006.
Unnamed fishermen sued in Chandpur over rare act of aggression against river cops
Police filed a case accusing some 50 unidentified fishermen over the alleged attack on river police by the fishing community that left six cops injured on Monday night.
Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chandpur River Police Station, said their Assistant Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam filed the case against 50 unidentified fishermen at the police station following the attack.
He, however, said no one could be arrested in this connection.
Fishermen alleged that they only get a 25 kg allotment of rice from the government to survive with family members during the 22-day ban, which is too miserly against their demand.
At least six cops were injured in the attack by fishermen when the law enforcers were enforcing a ban on hilsa catching in the Meghna River in Chandpur on Monday night.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of hilsa – from October 7 to October 28 this year– to protect safe spawning of the fish during its peak breeding period.

On Monday night, a team led by executive magistrates Sharmin Akhter and Zahid Hasan, went to Bishnapur union's Safarmali area in Sadar upazila to conduct the drive when a group of fishermen hurled brickbats at them, OC Quamruzzaman said.
"Hasan Mia, 26, of river police was critically injured during the attack. He was taken to Chandpur General Hospital. Later, Hasan was referred to Central Police Hospital in Dhaka," he added. "Several other policemen were injured in this attack and received primary treatment at Chandpur General Hospital."
On the other hand, a team of Alu Bazar police outpost conducted a drive to curb fishing during the ban period in Nilkamol area of the Meghan River on Monday afternoon.
Sensing the presence of the police, some fishermen on board an engine-run trawler hit the police speedboat, which caused four fishermen to fall in the river and the loss of a shotgun of one Bashar.
Md Jahirul Islam, in-charge of the police outpost, said divers from the fire service are yet to recover the gun from the river after conducting drives on Monday night and entire Tuesday. The four fishermen were rescued.
Md Kamruzzaman, superintendent of police of Chandpur Zone River Police, said they are vigilant to save mother Hilsas and none will be spared in connection with the attack on cops.
Another Rohingya camp leader gets shot in Cox’s Bazar
A Rohingya leader of camp No 9 sustained a bullet injury in an attack by miscreants in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday night.
Mohammad Hossain is a leader, locally known as Head Majhi, of the Rohingya camp No 9 in Balukhali Moinakhonar area of the upazila.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station, confirmed the matter and said the Rohingya leader received three bullets in his body during the attack around 8pm, leaving him critically injured.

He was rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where has been undergoing treatment, he said adding that no one has been arrested so far.
Four arrested after kidnapping businessman for ransom in Sylhet
Police arrested four persons for realising Tk 1.85 lakh from an apparel businessman after he was abducted on October 7.
Though police produced the arrestees with a remand prayer before a court on Tuesday, it sent them to jail fixing Wednesday for the hearing in this connection.
Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of South Surma Police Station, confirmed the matter to UNB.
Police had arrested them from Humayun Rashid Chattar in South Surma upazila by Monday, but only disclosed the matter today.
The arrestees are Md Tamij Ali, 40, son of late Abdus Samad of Chhatak upazila, Topu Ranjan Dev, 35, son of late Romendra Narayan Dev of Kotwali, Md Sajjad Mia, 45, son of late Anrej Mia and Md Nayon Mia, 35, son of late Sheikh Majid Mia of an area under Sylhet airport police station.

Police said the apparel businessman had been waiting for a bus to take him to Dhaka in front of the Al Safa Rest House, located within the upazila, around 5am on October 7.
That’s when four persons riding two motorbikes abducted him and took him to a rest house in Zindabazar of the city, asking for Tk 3 lakh as ransom, the police said.
The abductors were able to get Tk 85,000 off him, at the same time targeting his wife and pressuring her into transferring another Tk 1 lakh to them.
After receiving the amount, the kidnappers released him around 2am on October 8.
OC Kamrul said they arrested the abductors on Monday after the victim filed a case in this connection.
Defying Hilsa ban: 8 fishermen get 14 days in jail each
A mobile court on Tuesday sentenced eight fishermen to 14 days in jail each, for catching the much-coveted Hilsa fish in defiance of a temporary, three-week ban imposed by the government – itself aimed at replenishing Hilsa stocks and making livelihoods around its survival more sustainable. the Padma and Meghan rivers in the district.
The court led by Hajiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rashedul Islam also released two minor boys after taking a bond from their family in this connection, ARM Jahid Hasan, executive magistrate of the district administration, told reporters.
The convicts are Mohammad Jahangir, Yakub Bepari, Nurul Islam, Golam Mostafa, Md Rubel, Mahbub Bepari, Sajal Chandra Das and Nazrul Islam.

Magistrate Jahid Hasan said a joint team comprising members of the district fisheries office, river police and the Coast Guard conducted raids in different spots of the Padma and Meghna rivers, both sanctuaries of the King of Fish, as Hilsa is known throughout Bengal, including India’s West Bengal.
Eventually police detained 10 individuals who were caught red-handed in the act of fishing with current nets.
Some 10,000 metres of fishing nets and an engine-run boat were also seized during the drive, he said, adding that the nets were later burnt.
Besides, illegally caught fish weighing over 13kg were distributed among the distressed and orphans, added the magistrate.
Independent candidate lands in jail ahead of Magura Zilla Parishad polls
A Magura court has sent an independent chairman candidate of the Zilla Parishad elections and his brother, himself a Union Parishad chairman, to jail after they appeared before it with a bail petition.
District Sessions Jude Kamrul Hasan rejected the bail petition after the hearing in this regard was held Tuesday, said Sajedur Rahman Sangram, the public prosecutor.
Independent chairman candidate in the upcoming Zilla Parishad election Shariat Ullah Rajon, and his brother Kutubullah Hossain Kuti, chairman of Shrikol UP, both landed in prison.
Rajon’s opponents in the election for the chairman post include the ruling Awami League’s candidate Pankaj Kumar Kundu, who is currently general secretary of AL’s district unit, and Jahid Mia, a former Chhatra League leader in Shripur upazila.
The case for which the brothers ended up in jail dates back to August, when Shrikol UP member Chand Ali Sardar and three of his brothers were injured in an attack by unidentified miscreants at the time in Chhangachha village.

Later, a case was filed accusing Rajon and his brother Kuti in this connection, but they managed to obtain six week’ anticipatory bail from the High Court on August 31.
That six-week period ended today, which is why they were appearing before the lower court with the bail petition.
Advocate Shafikuzzaman and two other lawyers standing for the two brothers refused to comment on the court’s decision today.
3 to hang for killing housewife in Cumilla
A court in Cumilla has sentenced three people to death for the murder of a woman in 2016.
Cumilla district and sessions judge Md Helal Uddin handed down the punishment to the trio on Tuesday morning. However, another accused in the case was acquitted "for lack of evidence".
The death row convicts are Simon and Rakib of the Shikirgaon area of the Meghna upazila, and Tasir of the Manikarchar area of the upazila. Of them, Tasir was tried in absentia.
The acquitted person, Titu, belongs to the same area.
According to the prosecution, the woman went missing on June 20, 2016. Four days later, police had recovered her semi-decomposed body from a paddy field near her house.
On June 25, the woman's husband lodged a complaint against unidentified people at the Meghna police station. The cops later registered a murder case.
Subsequently, the investigating officer in the case submitted a chargesheet against the four people.
