CID to probe Boat Club businessman Nasir’s case against Pori Moni
A Dhaka court on Monday directed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the assault, vandalism, murder attempt and threat case against film actress Pori Moni filed by Nasir Uddin Mahmood, former Dhaka Boat Club executive and businessman.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Rajib Hasan made the direction and asked CID to submit a report within October 6.
On July 6, Nasir filed the case against Pori and two of her associates. The court fixed today’s date to pass an order in this regard after recording the plaintiff’s statement, said Anwarul Kabir Babu, additional public prosecutor of the court.

The others accused in the case are Fatema Tuz Jannat Boney and Zunayed Bogdadi Jimmy alias Jim.
According to the complaint, Pori and her associates were alcoholics, and used to get drunk in famous clubs and take liquor in parcels without making payment and threatening to file fake cases using their connection with police.
On the night of June 9 in 2021, Pori and her associates went to Dhaka Boat Club in Savar after 12am and got drunk as usual. Before leaving around 1 am Pori asked the plaintiff to sit with her for a while. At one point she tried to seduce Nasir and take a bottle of liquor as a parcel but free which the plaintiff denied.
After that Pori Moni started verbally assaulting him and threw a serving glass and phone at Nasir hurting him on the head and chest.

They also threatened Nasir with beating and killing, he said in the statement.
Later to cover up the incident she filed a case against Nasir and two others at Savar police station for rape and murder attempts.
Auto-rickshaw driver stabbed by muggers in Dhaka's Khilgaon dies
A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver, who was stabbed by muggers in Dhaka's Khilgaon Sunday, died at a hospital in the early hours of Monday, police said.
Mamun Howlader, 48, was from Mehendiganj upazila, Barishal, and lived in a rented house with his family in Kamrangir Char, Dhaka.
"The incident occurred Sunday afternoon. The critically injured Mamun was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and he succumbed to his injuries at 4:05am today," Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost, said.

"The body was sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy," he added.
Mamun's nephew Arif Hossain said his uncle was attacked as he was having tea after completing a trip to Khilgaon's Taltola.
At this time, some muggers tried to snatch his auto-rickshaw keys. As Mamun resisted he was stabbed repeatedly.

As the auto-rickshaw driver screamed for help, locals rushed there and caught one of the attackers and handed him over to police, Arif said.
Writ petition seeks compensation for baby born on road after accident
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directive to the authorities concerned to pay compensation to the baby who was born during a road accident that left its parents and sister dead in Mymensingh.
The bench of Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Md Zakir Hossain is expected to hear the writ petition, said Sayed Mahsib Hossain, a counsel of the petitioner.
Supreme Court lawyer Kaniz Fatema filed the writ petition on Monday.

An investigation into the accident was also sought in the writ petition.
Women and Child Affairs Secretary, Social Welfare Secretary, Road Transport and Bridges Secretary and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority were made respondents to the writ.
A tragic road accident near court building area in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh left Jahangir Alam, 35, his pregnant wife Ratna Begum, 26, and their daughter Jannat Ara, 2, of Raymani village in the upazila, dead on the spot.
Jahangir Alam went Trishal upazila headquarter with his eight-month pregnant wife and daughter for conducting a medical test of his wife.
While crossing the highway a speeding Mymenshingh-bound truck knocked them down, leaving all three family members dead on the spot, said police.
Miraculously the baby girl was born before the mother died on the road and she was taken to upazila health complex by locals.

The newborn was then given advanced treatment at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) and then at Community Based Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Mohammad Enamul Haque has taken all the responsibilities including treatment of the baby.
Narail teacher humiliation: HC orders judicial inquiry
The High Court on Monday ordered judicial probe into the humiliation of acting principal of Mirzapur United College Swapan Kumar Biswas in Narail Sadar Upazila.
The court also asked Narail's Chief Judicial Magistrate to investigate the incident and submit a report within the next 6 weeks.
A vacation bench of Justices Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and SM Moniruzzaman passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).

Advocates ZI Khan Panna and Aneek R Haque stood for the writ petitioner while advocate Samarendra Nath Biswas represented the state.
Earlier on July 4, Advocate Lutfe Jahan Purnima, on behalf of Ain O Salish Kendra, filed a writ petition seeking judicial probe into the humiliation of Narail college teacher Swapan Kumar Biswas over a Facebook post by a student.
On June 18, a Hindu student of Mirzapur United Degree College made a post on Facebook supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

There was day-long unrest in the college over the post and rumors that acting principal Swapan Kumar Biswas had sided with the student, following which police escorted him out of the campus but not before he was garlanded with shoes.
A video of the incident also went viral on social media that sparked huge criticism.
Different organisations, including Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, lodged protests over the incident and demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in it.
Data Protection Act 2022 to protect data, not to control it: Anisul
Law Minister Anisul Huq Sunday said the Data Protection Act 2022 aims to protect data, not to control it.
"Work is going on to bring the best balance between the protection of rights and the protection of data. Data protection law should be independent and separated," he added.
The minister was addressing a consultation workshop on the Data Protection Act 2022, organised by the ICT Division and held in a hybrid format.
State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said: "The law is created for protecting our citizen's data, not to control the information."

"While formulating the law, the similar laws of EU (GDPR), Brazil, South Africa, Canada, US (California) were closely observed and followed," he added.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said: "The law attempts to complement Bangladesh's national priorities in development."
"The government wishes to connect the markets and the factors of production to global supply chains in an orderly and safe environment," he added.
Representatives from both Bangladesh missions abroad and the missions in Dhaka and dignitaries from different organisations also joined the workshop.
Buet student’s death in Padma: 15 friends remanded
A Dhaka court on Saturday placed 15 friends of Buet student Sunny, whose body was recovered from the Padma River on Friday, on a three-day remand each in a case filed over the death.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Ashrafuzzaman passed the order after hearing.
Those remanded are -- Shariful Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Sezan Ahmed, Md Rubel, Md Sajib, Md Nuruzzaman, Md Nasir, Md Maruf, Md Ashraful Alam, Jahangir Hossain Liton, Md Noman, Md Jahid, ATM Shahrier Momin, Maruful Haque, and Roukanuzzaman alias Jitu.

Earlier, sub-inspector Shamsul Alam, also investigating officer of the case, produced all of the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for each.
The body of Tariquzzaman Sunny, a final-year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) was fished out of the Padma River on Friday.
UNB Keraniganj correspondent report: according to Sunny’s friends he went missing while bathing in the river with his friends at Moinot Ghat in Dhaka's Dohar upazila Thursday afternoon, said Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Dohar police station.
“However the incident seems suspicious as police received a call from Sunny’s cell phone number which was made to National Emergency Service 999 Thursday evening. But the call was disconnected before talking with anyone,” said the OC.

On Friday afternoon, Sunny’s elder brother Hasanuzzaman filed a murder case at Dohar police station and then 15 friends of Sunny who went to visit Moinot Ghat with him were arrested from different places in the capital.
Child marriage: Bagerhat parents, kazi get 6-month imprisonment
Parents of two minors and a kazi – legally empowered to register Muslim marriages and divorces – were sentenced to six months imprisonment for their involvement in child marriages in Bagerhat.
Musabberul Islam, Bagerhat Sadar upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and executive magistrate, conducted the mobile court Friday night at a kazi office in Nagerbazar.

The mobile court handed down the punishment to Ataul Bari, a kazi, Kabir Sardar, father of a minor girl from the village Fatepur of Sadar upazila, and Sajib Howladar, father of a minor boy from the Gobardia area.
Three to die for raping girl in Feni
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal here on Thursday sentenced three people to death for raping a girl in front of her mother 19 years ago.
The tribunal also fined the convicts Tk 2 lakh each.
The convicts are—Abul Kashem, son of Fakir Ahmed, Md Latu, son of Abdur Rashid and Jahangir Alam, son of Abul Kalam from Nababpur union under Feni’s Fulgazi upazila.

Mohammad Faruk, another accused in the case, was acquitted by the court as charges against him could not be proved.
Public Prosecutor Farid Ahmed Hazari said that all the convicts except Faruk were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, Abul Kashem, Latu, Jahangir Alam and Mohammad Faruk abducted the victim and her mother on the night of May 13, 2003. Later, they raped the girl keeping her mother at gunpoint.

The victim’s mother logged a complaint with Fulgazi police station in this regard the next day.
Police to help cattle traders transport their cash safely: IGP
Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed has advised the cattle traders to take the help of police if needed to return home safely with the money they make from selling their animals.
He said this while talking to reporters at Kamalapur field, after inspecting security arrangements of cattle markets in different parts of the capital on Saturday.
The IGP said, "I have talked to all the traders, buyers and tenants about the discipline of the cattle market, paying tax (hasil), and overall management.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam and other senior police officials were present on the occasion.
DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (Admin) Mir Rezaul Alam, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Operations) Krishnapad Roy, Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) AKM Hafeez Akter, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mohammad Munibur Rahman and other senior officials of DMP were present.
Security beefed up in Dhaka for Eid celebrations
Authorities have beefed up security in the densely populated metropolis to ensure smooth celebrations of the holy Eid-ul-Azha on Sunday.
Additional security measures have been taken to avoid any untoward situation in the capital on Eid day, said additional director general of Rab, Colonel Md Quamrul Hasan.

“Though we don't have any specific intelligence input of any possible terror attack on the occasion of Eid, we are not taking any chance,,” he said.
"Our men also inspected the overall security measures at National Eidgah Maidan on Saturday. We are also relying on intelligence network," the Rab officer said.
