Bank recruitment test question leak: BUET Prof Nikhil, 15 others indicted
A Dhaka court today (July 24, 2023) indicted 16 people, including BUET Professor Nikhil Ranjan Dhar, in a case filed over the question paper leak of bank recruitment examination in 2021.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain passed the order to frame the charges against Nikhil Ranjan Dhar and 15 others.
Before that, the magistrate dismissed the petitions submitted for discharging Nikhil and others from the charges in the case.

The recruitment test for five state-owned banks was held on November 6, 2021.
Sub-inspector Sukant Biswas of Tejgaon Zonal Team filed a case at Badda Police Station under the Public Examinations (Offences) Act following the question leak on November 10 the same year.
On November 21 that year, BUET removed Prof Nikhil Ranjan Dhar from the post of head of Industrial and Production Engineering Department and also relieved him of all exam responsibilities.
In December, 2021, BUET authorities asked Nikhil to explain his involvement in leaking the questions of recruitment exam for five Banks.

On November 16, 2022, Shamim Ahmed, a sub-inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) and the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet excluding Prof Nikhil as an accused.
Earlier this year, a Dhaka court summoned the investigation officer to show cause why and how he relieved Prof Nikhil from the charges.
Following that, investigation officer Shamim submitted a supplementary charge against Nikhil to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
RAB arrests 3 including Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya Ameer from Munshiganj
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) say they have arrested three members of the militant group, Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, including its Ameer, Md Anisur Rahman, from Munshiganj's Louhajang upazila early today (July 24, 2023).
The identities of the other operatives were not disclosed by the law enforcers.

Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a drive in Boronopara village in Louhajang upazila around 3 am and arrested the three men, ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of RAB's Legal and Media wing, said.
During the drive, the RAB team also recovered firearms and explosives from the alleged Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya operatives, he added.

Details are set to be disclosed at a media briefing at RAB's media centre in Dhaka at 11:30 am.
2 arrested for detonating homemade explosive on Dhanmondi 32
Police arrested two men Sunday on charge of detonating a cocktail-like explosive device - described as a chocolate bomb - at Dhanmondi 32, the old road number 32 where the Bangabandhu Museum is located.
The arrestees were identified as Abdul Halim, 29, and Halim Raj, 34.
According to police, the explosion occurred just beside Santoor restaurant, located on 32 where it meets the Mirpur Road, around 5:30pm on Sunday.
Parvez Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhanmondi Police Station, said “Halim Raj, who writes stories and poems about Bangabandhu and his family, had been attempting to get his works noticed by the prime minister for a long time. Despite his efforts, he couldn't find a way to reach her.”
A frustrated Raj sought the help of a man named Kishore, to whom he paid Tk35,000 to make sure he gets noticed. Even with Kishore's assistance, he couldn't get his stories and poems to the prime minister, according to the police's account.
Today's incident was a culmination of this growing sense of frustration on the part of Raj. Desperate to attract attention to their cause, the two individuals resorted to creating homemade chocolate bombs.”
“They are being interrogated. We seized 20 cocktail-like chocolate bombs from the scene,” said OC Parvez.
Anti-Aedes drive: DSCC fines 13 offenders Tk 1.4 lakh
Mobile courts of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) fined 13 establishments a total of Tk 1.40 lakh for finding larvae of Aedes mosquitoes, the dengue vector, on Sunday.
Moreover, 13 cases were filed in connection with the drives.

Eight mobile courts conducted the drives in Free School Street, Sabuj Bagh, Nabipur Lane, Malitola, East Jurain, North Manda and Konapara areas of the City Corporation.
A total of 384 houses and establishments were inspected in today's operation and Tk 1.40 lakh fine was imposed for finding mosquito larvae in 13 houses and under-construction buildings.
DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation intensified their drives led by magistrates to destroy the breeding spots of the Aedes mosquito.

Bangladesh health authorities reported 2,292 new dengue cases today (Sunday), the highest number of hospitalisations in a day from the mosquito-borne disease this year.
During the period, nine more deaths were reported from dengue, raising the fatalities from the viral disease in 2023 to 176, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Appellate Division orders Dr Yunus to pay NBR Tk 12 crore tax on donations
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (July 23, 2023) ordered Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus to pay Tk 12 crore tax on donations to the National Bureau of Revenue (NBR) after dismissing a leave-to-appeal in this regard.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, passed the order after hearing the leave-to-appeal submitted by Dr Yunus against a High Court verdict.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state during the hearing, while Fida M Kamal and Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun stood for Dr Yunus.
Earlier on June 21, a leave-to-appeal was filed against the High Court verdict. On July 9, the chamber court set July 17 for hearing in the Appellate Division.

On July 17, the Appellate Division adjourned till July 23 the hearing on the appeal against the High Court verdict.
According to the petition, NBR served three separate notices claiming Tk 12,28,74,000 tax against Tk 61.57 crore donation during 2011-2012 fiscal year, Tk 1.60 crore tax against Tk 8.15 crore donation in FY 2012-2013, and Tk 1.50 crore tax against Tk 7 crore donation in FY 2013-2014 as per the Donation Tax-1990.

Dr Yunus challenged the validity of NBR's notices and filed a case in the Appellate Tribunal. According to him, NBR cannot claim tax against donations as per law.
On November 20, 2014, his application was rejected. Then in 2015, he filed three income tax reference cases in the High Court.
After that, the High Court ruled on May 31 that the tax imposed by the NBR against the money that he had donated to three trusts was valid.
After the verdict on May 31, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told reporters that Dr Yunus had donated Tk 77 crore to three institutions. “The petitions were dismissed. Now the tax demanded by the NBR will have to be paid. The NBR had demanded more than Tk 15 crore. He (Dr Yunus) has already given around Tk 3 crore. Now the remaining Tk 12 crore will have to be paid in taxes.”

Thakurgaon quack arrested for derogatory remarks against PM Hasina on Facebook
A 28-year-old man in Thakurgaon has been arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA), for making 'derogatory remarks' about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and followers of Awami League on Facebook .
Amanullah Aman, a quack (untrained doctor found in villages) by profession and son of Abu Taleb of Khamar Hatatpara under Amgaon union of Haripur upazila of the district, was arrested on Saturday.

According to the case statement, Aman uploaded a post on his Facebook account undermining Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her fellows on July 18.
Enraged by the post, Mizanur Rahman, member of the advisory council of the upazila unit Awami League, filed the case under DSA.
The post was deliberately uploaded to create unrest in the country and topple the government, said the statement.
Sahidur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Haripur police station, said they arrested Aman from his house early Saturday after the case was filed on Friday evening.

Primarily, evidence of derogatory remarks against the prime minister and AL party men were found, he said.
Aman was sent to a court in Thakurgaon while shown arrested in the case, the police officer added.
Land dealer Ekhlas killing: DB arrests 5 suspects including industrialist mastermind
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has solved the case over the murder of Hazaribagh land dealer Ekhlas and arrested five people including an industrialist, and two alleged to be directly involved in the incident.
The arrestees were identified as Monir Hossain alias Leather Monir alias Company Monir, who is the industrialist and alleged mastermind, A. Rahman alias Rahman Kallu, Md. Eshak, Faisal (full name not provided), and Jhantu Mollah.
Several teams of DB (Lalbagh division) conducted simultaneous drives in Jeshore and Magura districts, Keraniganj in the outskirts of the capital, and Elephant Road and Airport area in the city and arrested the five suspects.

Two Bangladeshi passports, a mobile phone, Tk 22,000 Bangladeshi and 5,000 Indian rupees were recovered from Monir's possession during the raids.
Briefing reporters at DMP Media Center in Minto Road of the city, Additional Commissioner and the chief of DB, Harun Or Rashid, formally disclosed it on Sunday afternoon.
Land trader Ekhlas had left his Hazaribagh home at around 10:30 pm on June 28 and did not return. Relatives searched for him in different places and registered a GD at the local police station. The next day, June 29, was Eid ul Azha. The day after Eid-ul-Azha, June 30, the police of Kamrangirchar police station recovered the body of a person in a white plastic bag on the western side of the barbed wire fence of Hazaribagh Fire Service Station. Then Ekhlas's relatives went there and identified the body. A murder case was filed with Kamrangichar police station on the same day.

Briefing reporters, the DB chief Harun said that Monir, who owns hundreds of crores of taka is the main planner of this murder. Ekhlas was killed over a land dispute.
Harun said Ekhlas owns a big piece of land, which is worth billions of Taka. Company Monir tried to grab the land in various ways. Knowing this, Ekhlas filed several cases with the local police station and registered various complaints to the Dhaka District Commissioner's office. As a result, after failing to take the land, Monir planned to kill Ekhlas.
Industrialist and leather trader Monir owns several tanneries in Hazaribagh and Savar areas. He is also a land grabber and broker. Monir had earlier complated various land deals through Ekhlas at different times. It was Monir who planned and ordered this murder.

The DB chief also said that Monir wanted to flee the country after the killing. The 'Cutout method', an often used tactic in underworld killings in an attempt to erase all ties tof a killing to its mastermind, was used. After the murder, the killers fled to Thailand and Calcutta through Chittagong airport. On July 20, while returning to Dhaka by air from Thailand, Jhantu Molla was arrested with his passport from the airport area.
Jhantu Molla is the cashier of Md. Monir Hossain aka Company Monir. Jhantu is in 4-day police remand by the court.
All accused identified over Jubo League activist Rubel's murder: DB chief
Chief of the Detective Branch (DB)of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP Md Harun-ur-Rashid on Saturday said that they have already identified those involved with the killing of Jubo League activist Oliullah Rubel in Dhaka’s Gulbagh area early Friday.
“Police obtained names of all the accused along with their mobile phone numbers. Now only arrest is left, they will be arrested any time,” he said.
The DB chief said this while talking to journalists after a press conference at DMP media centre in the capital on Saturday.

He said those who took part in the killing mission came in the Gulbagh area by motorbikes and kept an eye on Rubel’s movement. Some hacked Rubel to death and others guarded the area.
The DB head hoped that they would be able to arrest those involved with the killing within a short time.
Asked whether they found any similarity between the killings of Rubel and Motijheel’s Awami League leader Tipu, he said, “As both the incidents happened in Shahjahanpur, we will arrest all shortly and try to compare with each other incidents.”
Replying to a question, the DB officer said it will be known later whether any criminal from the underworld was working to commit the killing.

On early Friday, the unidentified miscreants hacked Rubel to death at Gulbagh in Shahjahanpur in the capital. He had the business of internet and egg supply in the area.
Rubel was also former office secretary of Shahjahanpur Thana Chhatra League. He was involved with the local Jubo League without any official position.
7 get life term for murder in Mymensingh
A Mymensingh court on Thursday sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for killing a man in Mymensingh's Gouripur upazila in 2006.
They are- Abdul Qaddus, Tara Mia, Hadis Mia, Abu Bakr, Atiullah, Matiur Rahman Moti and Fakar Uddin.
Judge Sabrina Ali of Mymensingh's Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 handed down the verdict around 4:30 pm, said Mosharraf Hossain, bench assistant at the court.
Three defendants were acquitted as the allegation brought against them could not be proved, he said.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more imprisonment.
According to the case, Rajab Ali, a resident of Bahertola area of Gouripur upazila, was killed in an attack by rivals over a land dispute on October 12, 2006.
A case was filed against 11 people following a complaint lodged by the victim's son Harun-or-Rashid the next day.
Later, one of the accused died.
Drug trader killed in police firing during relatives’ ‘bid to snatch accused’ in Brahmanbaria
A drug trader was killed in police firing during his relatives’ ‘bid to snatch his son, also an accused in a narcotics case, from the custody of the law enforcers at Adampur village in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria early Thursday.
Deceased Ayub Noor, 50, was a drug dealer and an accused in five narcotics cases, said police.
Thirteen people, including 10 policemen, were injured in the incident.

Raju Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station, said almost all the family members of Ayub Noor of Adampur village in the upazila are drug dealers.
There are five cases against Ayub Noor, five cases against his son Arif Noor and 10 cases against another son Tofazzal.
There was a court arrest warrant against Arif Noor, said the OC.
A team of police from Bijoynagar police station raided the house in the early hours of Thursday and arrested Arif from his house.

When he was being brought to the police station after his arrest, his family members started shouting and surrounded the police from all sides, said the police official.
At that time, they attacked the police with locally-made weapons and snatched Arif in handcuffs.
Ayub Noor, Salma Begum and Amon were injured when police fired eight rounds of rubber bullets in self-defence, added the OC.
The injured were first taken to the Sadar Hospital and from there were referred to Dhaka. Ayub died at a hospital in Dhaka, he said.

A search operation is underway to find accused Arif who was snatched, added OC Raju.
However, relatives of the deceased claimed that some people came to pick up Arif at the house at around 3:30 am on Thursday. They didn’t know whether they were police and came forward on suspicion of those people being robbers, they said.
