3 siblings held over killing mother, daughter in Bagerhat
Police arrested three brothers in connection with the murder of a woman and her daughter in Bagerhat's Sharankhola upazila on Friday.
The arrestees are Monir Howlader, 45, Neharul Howlader,48 and Milon Howlader,40, sons of Abdus Samad Howlader of Paschim Rajapur village of the Upazila.

Police conducted a special drive on Friday night and arrested them, Bagerhat Superintendent of Police KM Ariful Haque said on Saturday.
Later, the arrestees were handed over to the court, he said.
"Efforts are on to arrest the other accused in the case," added the SP.
Earlier, A 38-year-old woman and her daughter were reportedly hacked to death by some miscreants in Bagerhat's Sharankhola upazila on Friday evening.

Papia Begum was the wife of Abu Zafar Hawladar, a resident of Uttar Rajapur village. Her daughter Sauda Jeni was 6 years old.
Later, a case was filed accusing seven people including Papia's husband at Sharankhola police station following a complaint lodged by her brother Al Amin Khalifa.
'Operation Hillside' in Moulvibazar: 10 operatives of newly formed militant group detained, CTTC says
Members of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit have detained 10 suspected operatives of the newly formed militant outfit ‘Imam Mahmud’s Kafela’ after conducting ‘Operation Hillside’ at a hideout in a remote hilly area in East Taktiuli village under Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Saturday (August 12, 2023).
Three children were also rescued from the hideout during the drive.
The detainees are Shariful Islam, 40, his wife Amina Begum, 40, their 20-year-old daughter Habiba Binte Shariful, of Satkhira’s Tala upazila; Hafiz Ullah, 25, of Kishoreganj’s Itna upazila; Khairul Islam, 22 and his wife Meghna, 22, of Narayanganj’s Fatullah upazila; Rafiul Islam, 22, of Sirajganj’s Kazipur upazila; Shapla Begum, 22, wife of one Abdus Sattar of Pabna’s Atgharia upazila; Maisha Islam, 20, wife of Sohel Tanjim Rana of Natore; and Sanjida Khatun, 18, wife of Sumon Miah of Bogura’s Shariakandi upazila.

He said the detainees are members of the newly formed militant outfit ‘Imam Mahmud’s Kafela’.
The CTTC chief said they have also recovered 2.5 kg of explosives, 50 detonators, training manual, combat boots, militant books, locally-made sharp weapons, Tk 3,61,000 in cash and ornaments from the hideout.
Asaduzzaman said they had information that a militant outfit had set up a hideout on one of the hills in the district and was recruiting new members.
The CTTC chief said they came to know the name of the mastermind of the militant group from the detainees and drives are now on to nab him.

Earlier on Friday night, the CTTC members accompanied by district police cordoned off a building in the village.
Later this morning, the CTTC unit initiated the operation to neutralize any potential risk stemming from the hideout.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Muhibul Islam said the detained suspected militants are residents of other districts and they have been living in the area for the past two months after constructing a house in the remote hilly area.

Law enforcement agencies have launched "Operation Hillside" at a suspected militant hideout in East Taktiuli of Moulvibazar on Saturday.

Youth beaten dead on suspicion of theft in Kushtia
A 21-year-old youth was lynched to death by a mob over an allegation of theft in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on Thursday night.
The deceased Akram Shah was son of Lalon Shah of Masjidpara village under Jhunidah union of the upazila.
Police and locals said a theft occurred at the house of late freedom fighter Headayet Ali at Khandakerpara last Monday night.
On suspicion, eight to ten people picked Akram up from his house on Thursday noon and tied him with a tree of Hedayet Ali and gave a thrashing for around two hours, they said.

At one stage, the victim became unconscious and suffered from bleeding from nose and mouth, they narrated.
Later, he was handed over to one of his relatives who took him to his (Akram) house. The youth succumbed to his injuries at home around 11pm.
The victim’s paternal uncle Bisharat Ali Shah alleged that his nephew was beaten to death by some locals suspecting him as a thief, but actually he was not involved with it.
Holding Tanjil, Likhon, Hasibul, Rajon, Rukon and Sajal responsible for the death of his nephew, he demanded justice for Akram.

Jahurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bheramara police station, said on information they recovered the body from the house and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A process was underway to file a case in this connection, he said, adding that drives are on to nab accused involved in the death.

9 suspects detained for attacking train, snatching valuables in Tongi
Police have so far detained nine suspects in connection with the attack on a train and snatching valuables from its passengers at Tongi Railway Station of Gazipur on Thursday night.
Ferdous Ahmed Biswas, officer-in-charge of Kamalapur Railway Police Station, confirmed the development on Friday morning, saying that police could round up nine people for attacking the train and taking away valuables from passengers after conducting drivers in and around the Tongi area over Thursday night.
The arrestees--Mehedi Hasan Joy, 26, Md Rony, 35, Rabiul Hasan, 40, Md Swadin, 30, Md Saiful Islam Jakir, 25, Md Masud, 27, Md Nasir, 20, Md Nayon Hasan, 28, and Md Ashiq, 22, are residents of different areas under Tongi.

Earlier on Thursday night, the Dhaka-bound train ‘Karnaphuli Express’ from Chattogram came under attacks when it had been waiting to enter the Outer Signal of Tongi Railway Station around 10:30 pm.
Towhidul Islam, station master of Tongi Railway Junction, said snatching occurred in some bogies after the train stopped at the Outer Signal.

The miscreants hurled stones targeting passengers through windows of the train, creating panic in the train. A few passengers and a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) sustained injuries in the incident, he said.
The miscreants ran away soon after police had rushed to the spot, the station master said, adding that drives were conducted to nab the miscreants.

No journalists will be harassed by Cyber Security Act: Law Minister
The proposed Cyber Security Act (CSA) will not be misused and it will be very helpful in preventing harassment of journalists.
“As a result, no media persons will be harassed by the proposed Cyber Security Act, ” Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said on Thursday.
The minister addressed a press briefing on the proposed Cyber Security Act by absorbing the previous Digital Security Act at the BCC Auditorium in the capital’s Agargaon this afternoon.

"The proposed CSA will be very helpful in checking cyber crimes. Apart from those, the mental pressure that was created among the people because of the Digital Security Act, the panic which was seen while publishing news freely in the media, the concerns raised by the journalist community, will also go away," he said.
The punishment in the DSA, which had created a controversy, has been reduced in the proposed Cyber Security Act (CSA) to a great extent. Some non-bailable sections have been made bailable, he added.

"The DSA had Section 29 to deal with defamation charges. In the proposed Act, the only punishment would be fine. In section 21, there was jail term for 10 years, now it has been reduced to 7 years.”
The law minister said that the proposed cyber security law has provisions for fines ranging from one paisa to a maximum of Tk 25 lakh. That does not mean that the fine will always be Tk 25 lakh. The Court will impose a penalty based on the nature of the offence, and it is said in the law, he added.

On August 7, the cabinet approved in principle the draft of the new act, annulling some stringent provisions like jail terms on defamation charges.
State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak presided over the briefing while Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Secretary Md Moinul Kabir, Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, Information and Communication Technology Division secretary Md Shamsul Arefin and other senior officials attended the event.
Will do whatever it takes to bring back Tarique, Zubaida: Home Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday pledged to ‘do whatever it takes’ to bring back BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman who were sentenced by a court recently.
The minister made the remarks at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 10) afternoon while talking to journalists regarding a memorandum that was handed over to the minister on behalf of Jubo league demanding four points.

Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Md Mainul Hossain Khan handed over the memorandum to the home minister that included – among others – the demand to bring Tarique Rahman and Zubaida who were sentenced in a corruption case by the court.
'We have received their memorandum. We will do the arrangements required by the Ministry of Home Affairs according to the law. We know all the facts. Tareq Zia and his wife have already been sentenced by the court. We will do everything we can to bring them back," the minister said.

"I think all the demands are logical and we’ll take measures accordingly," he added.
On August 2, a Dhaka court sentenced Tarique Rahman to 9 years and his wife's Zubaida to three years in prison in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2007.
Efforts will be made to resolve cases filed under DSA as per provisions of the new law
Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said that the punishment outlined in the proposed Cyber Security Act have been scaled down and efforts will be made to resolve cases filed under the former Digital Security Act according to provisions of the new law.
The minister said this while talking to reporters after a discussion with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwen Lewis, at the Secretariat.
Digital Security Act to be replaced by Cyber Security Act 2023
When asked about the attorney general’s assertion that proceedings under the Digital Security Act would continue, the law minister said, “We are considering our options carefully. Violations committed prior to the introduction of the new law will be subject to the previous legal framework. However, we are contemplating the appropriate course of action. The amendments to this law have led to a substantial reduction in punitive measures. We are committed to ensuring successful implementation of these revised measures,” he said.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is trying to unearth the motive behind the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi and bring those involved in the murder to book with utmost importance.
“We have sent the samples of 25 suspected people for DNA test and other evidence in USA but the USA in its report revealed that the DNA tests found involvement of two more people outside the 25 suspected people and still they are on the run, which is the main reason behind delay in the submission of the probe report,” said RAB's Legal and Media Wing Director Khandaker Al Moin while briefing reporters on Monday.

Due to delay in identifying the actual culprits, the submission of the probe report in connection with the murder case, he said.
“RAB is investigating the murder case taking in mind that the innocent person should not be harassed,” said the director.
