Customs seizes two more large consignments of liquors from Chattogram port
The customs seized two more large consignments of foreign liquors from Chattogram port Monday as the goods were imported under false declarations and through tax evasions.
"We took possession of two more containers loaded with stashes of foreign liquors," Saiful Haque, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Customs House, said.
The consignments of liquor were brought to Bangladesh under the declarations of yarn and resin imports by faking import permission and using the names of Mongla EPZ's VIP Industries Bangladesh and Nilphamari Uttara EPZ's Dong Jin Industrial.

The customs seized five containers of foreign liquors in the last three days.
Sunday, Chattogram Customs House took possession of one huge consignment of foreign liquors from Chattogram port.
Using the name of Dong Jin of Uttara EPZ, the consignment of liquor was brought to Bangladesh under the declaration of yarn import from China by faking import permission.
The importers evaded duty of Tk12.45 crore, Saiful said.
Saturday, the customs seized two large consignments of foreign liquors from Sonargaon and Narayanganj.
Chattogram Customs House seized two containers loaded with huge stashes of foreign liquors during a special drive.

The consignments of liquor were released at the port under the declarations of textured yarn and machinery imports from China by faking import permission and using the names of Cumilla EPZ's Hashy Tiger and Ishwardi EPZ's BHK Textile, Saiful said.
As the shipments contained foreign liquor with high taxable value, importers evaded a duty of Tk24.70 crore.
3 members of theft gang held in city
Detectives on Sunday arrested three alleged members of a gang of thieves in the capital.
The arrestees are Anik Hasan,22, Nahid Hossain,19 and Nadeem Mohammad Sagor, 18.

4 CU students suspended over ‘sexually assaulting’ two students in 2021
Chattogram University on Monday suspended four students for their alleged involvement in sexually assaulting two female students of the university last year, officials said.
Those suspended are Junayed of Arabic Department of the university, Rubel, Islamic History and Culture Department, Md Raju and Md Emon, of Philosophy Department of the university.
All of them were suspended for one year, said CU Registrar (Acting) SM Manirul Hasan while talking at a press briefing held at the conference room of the VC.
The university authorities also asked to resolve two more allegations received by Sexual Repression Cell.

Already three allegations received by Sexual Repression Cell were resolved and the authorities concerned also warned two more teachers of the university of the allegations brought against them, said Manirul.
On September 16, two students of Communication and Journalism Department were allegedly sexually assaulted in front of CU Central Mosque.
Besides, another female student was sexually assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with his friend on July 17, this year.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained four people in connection with the alleged assault of a female student that sparked protests on the campus.
Case against Prof Yunus: Final hearing on scrapping case on Aug 11
The High Court on Monday fixed August 11 for the final hearing on the appeal to scrap the case filed against Nobel Laureate and Chairman of Grameen Communications Dr Muhammad Yunus over violation of the Labour Law.
The HC bench of Justice SM Quddus Zaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol passed the order.
Lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments while lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun stood for Prof Yunus.
On June 13, the Appellate Division stayed the trial proceedings of the case for two months.
The SC also ordered the HC bench led by Justice SM Kuddus Zaman to dispose of the rule seeking explanation as to why the case against Prof Yunus should not be cancelled, said Attorney General AM Amin Uddin.
On June 7, the Appellate Division ordered disposal of the rule within two months.

On September 9 last year, Labour Inspector Arifuzzaman of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, filed the case with Dhaka third labour court.
Other accused in the case are- Ashraful Hasan, Managing Director of Grameen Telecom, its director Nurzahan Begum and Shahjahan.
According to the case, in an inspection visit to Grameen Telecom inspectors of the department found that 101 workers and staff who were supposed to be permanent were not made so.
No participation fund and welfare fund was formed for them and five per cent of the company’s profit was not provided to the workers following the law.
Upon the complaint a criminal case was filed under section 4, 7, 8, 117, 234 of the Labour Act.
On October 12, the labour court granted bail to the all four accused.
Later on December 7, Prof Yunus filed a petition with the High Court seeking cancellation of the case.
On December 12, HC stayed the procedure of a case for six months.
The court also issued a rule asking the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments why the case will not be set aside. The court asked secretaries of the ministry of law, ministry of labour and employment and others involved to respond to the rule.
Youth gets bail after marrying victim in Ctg

Police have sought a 7-day remand for five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists who were arrested in the case filed over the sexual harassment of a female student at Chittagong University.The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Azim, 23, a second-year student of History department of CU, Nurul Absar alias Babu, 22, second year student of Anthropology department of CU, Nur Hossain alias Shaon, 22, a first year student of Hathazari Government College, and Masud Rana alias Masud, 22, and Saiful Islam a second year student of the same college.Police saught 7 days remand for questioning the five people arrested in the sexual harassment case, said Ruhul Amin Sabuj, officer-in-charge of Hathajari Model Police Station."We will interrogate them after receiving the court order", the OC added.On July 17, a female student was physically assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend around 10pm.

A case was also filed under the Women and Children Repression Act accusing five people.On July 19, after the university authorities set the time limit for female students to enter the residential hall before 10 pm after the incident students started a movement against the decision.Since hundreds of CU students have been staging protests, holding human chains every day on the campus demanding justice for the female student who was allegedly harassed.
Issue red alert for arrest of Teletalk’s fugitive AGM Tareq in graft case: HC
The High Court on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to take necessary steps against former Assistant General Manager (AGM; System Operations) of Teletalk SM Tarek Rahman in the case filed for embezzling Tk 9.74 crore.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Secretary of Home Affairs have been asked to issue Interpol red notices in order to alert international authorities of the compulsion to arrest the fugitive.
They have also been asked to inform the High Court in the form of an affidavit on October 16.
Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after hearing a petition filed by ACC.
Advocate Rafiqul Islam Sohel appeared for the writ petition in the court, while Advocate AKM Fazlul Haque for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Besides, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

According to the case statement, company secretary Mahbubur Rahman filed a case at Gulshan police station on October 12, 2011.
ACC pressed charges against the accused in court after investigating the case.
The Divisional Special Judge of Dhaka on May 6, 2019, sentenced SM Tarek Rahman to 5 years imprisonment and fined Tk 3 crores under section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The accused embezzled the money by calling generated Teletalk SIM without billing and converted prepaid SIM to postpaid between October 2010 to June 2011, the statement added.
3 held for importing liquor under false declaration
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have detained three people over the seizure of large consignment of foreign liquor imported under false declaration and through tax evasion from Narayanganj’s Sonargaon and the city’s Airport area.
The detainees were identified as Md Nazmul Molla, 23, Md Saiful Islam, 34, and Abdul Ahad, 22, of Munshiganj.
Acting on a tip-off, members of Rab-11 detained Najmul and Saiful after conducting a drive at a parking stand on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sonargaon and seized two containers loaded with 36,816 bottles of foreign liquor worth Tk 37 crore on Saturday night, said ANM Imran Khan, Assistant Director (ASP) of Legal and Media Wing of Rab, in a press release on Sunday.
The law enforcers also seized Tk 98.19 lakh and a large amount of foreign currencies after conducting a drive at a house in the city’s Wari area in this connection, the release added.

On Sunday morning, Rab members detained another culprit Ahad from the city’s Airport area.
During primary interrogation, the detainees confessed their involvement in the importation and marketing of the drugs.
They used to carry out this illegal drug importation activity through the connivance of C&F using documents of different companies, They kept those in warehouses at Munshiganj's Srinagar, Dhaka's Bangshal and Wari after importing under false declaration and through tax evasion, it added.
Legal steps are underway against the detainees, reads the release.
Shakib serves legal notice to Banglalink, Jamuna Bank ; demands Tk 5.8 crore fine
Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has sent a legal notice to telecom operator Banglalink and Jamuna Bank demanding fine for illegally using his photos and brand image for business purposes.
Shakib’s lawyer Ashraful Hadi sent the notice to Banglalink Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Jamuna Bank through registered post on Sunday seeking Tk 5,80,50,000 fine from these organisations.
Both the organisations have been asked to remove Shakib’s photos, brand, signature etc used in different places for business purposes within seven days.
The companies have been warned of legal action for failure to follow the notice.

According to the notice, on January 21 in 2014, a deal was signed between Shakib and Banglalink Digital Communication Ltd for using Shakib’s popular brand image on a limited scale for their business purpose.
Although the deal expired on January 20, 2016, the company continued to use the brand image of the Bangladesh team cricket allrounder and then he decided to send a legal notice, said barrister Ashraful Hadi.
“Jamuna Bank was also sent the notice as it’s ATM booth used Banglalink’s advertisement with Shakib’s photos. Which means Jamuna Bank has business relationship with Banglalink and they had been indirectly using his brand image illegally' ”said Ashraful hadi.

The detainees have been identified as Mohammad Azim, 23, son of Amir Hossain of Noakhali, Nur Hossain alias Shaon, 22, son of Zabed Hossain of Fatehpur, Nurul Absar alias Babu, 22, son of Belayet Hossain of Feni district, and Masud Rana alias Masud, 22, son of A Mannan of Jhalakathi district.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-7 conducted drives in Hathazar and Raozan upazilas and detained them on Friday night, said Commanding officer of Rab-7, Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf, on Saturday morning.

During questioning , the detainees have confessed to their guilt, said Rab.

They had also captured the incident on video and threatened them to make it viral. Later, they fled with the mobile phones and wallets of the two students.
A five-member body has already been formed to look into the matter while a complaint was lodged with Hathazari Police.
Meanwhile, Chattogram University (CU) students staged a protest on the varsity campus on Wednesday night, demanding justice for the female student.
The students had also protested against the university’s diktat asking students to return to the campus latest by 10pm.
